Suspect arrested on murder charges in fatal weekend shooting in Dothan

A man was arrested on murder charges in the early Saturday morning slaying of another man in Dothan, police said Monday.

Sirrico Santonio Bennett, 48, of Dothan, was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Bernard Mandrell McClendon, police said.

Bennett, who is being held in the Houston County Jail without bond, was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.

McClendon, a Dothan resident, was found shot in the front yard of a home in the 1100 block of Persimmon Street around 6:45 a.m. Saturday. Officers believed McClendon was shot in the upper torso when he walked to the yard and died of his injury.

Bennett’s arrest came about after Dothan police asked for tips in the case.

“Members of our community responded by providing tips we were able to follow up on. As a result, we have conducted numerous interviews and searches which have yielded investigators with probable cause to make an arrest in this case,” the department said in a statement issued Monday.

“We are extremely appreciative of our community providing the information they have thus far. Even though an arrest has been made, this continues to be an ongoing investigation,” the statement continued. “We continue to ask if anyone has any information related to this case to please call the Dothan Police Department at 334-615-3000.”
