Suspect arrested in Foley park stabbing, assault

Foley police have arrested the man identified as a suspect in the case of a woman stabbed Wednesday in the city’s central Heritage Park.

According to information provided by the city, 40-year-old Bernard Christopher Abney was arrested late Saturday. “We are relieved that he is in custody and appreciate all the hard work by the many agencies involved as well as the media and citizens of our local communities,” Foley Police Chief Thurston Bullock said.

The incident took place late Wednesday afternoon on the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail, a landscaped path that parallels Ala. 59, running a block to the east of the heavily traveled main artery. According to previous reports, police were notified about 5:40 p.m. that a woman had run into a business, saying she had been attacked. Officers found she had stab wounds to her arm, torso and thigh; she was taken to USA Health University Hospital in Mobile for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds and later was reportedly recovering at home.

Police identified Abney as an armed and dangerous suspect. He was identified as being from Mobile; information released Sunday said he was believed to be homeless, and he was listed as such in jail records.

Jail records indicated that Abney was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail late Saturday evening on a first-degree charge of attempted rape. Jail records also indicated he may also be facing a charge of failing to apply with the Sex Offender Registration Notification Act. His record includes multiple incidents in the 2004-2005 time period where he was charged with rape or attempted rape and kidnapping or attempted kidnapping.

Police said previously that Abney also would be charged with second-degree assault in the current case.
