She had the fried catfish and chose broccoli and coleslaw for sides.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson stopped by Birmingham’s Yo’ Mama’s Restaurant for lunch on Thursday. The beloved soul food spot later shared a photo on FB of Jackson and Yo’ Mama’s owner Denise Peterson, with the caption, “Mama enjoyed feeding Hon Ketanji Brown Jackson lunch today!”

Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, is in town to speak at a memorial service marking the 60th anniversary of the 1963 bombing that killed four Black young girls at Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. The service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 15.

Yo’ Mama’s is known for dishes including their fried chicken and waffles, including a variation topped with peach cobbler.

Peterson opened Yo’ Mama’s in late 2014, after she retired from her BellSouth job after 33 years there. She started the eatery with her daughter, Crystal Peterson, as a co-owner.

The restaurant has made the news with bold-font names before. On Twitter, comedian and actor Roy Wood Jr., a former Birmingham resident, recently cited Yo’ Mama’s as one of the city’s best soul food restaurants. In 2021, Yo’ Mama’s was featured on Netflix travel/food show “Fresh, Fried and Crispy.” In 2016, former first-lady and then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stopped by Yo’ Mama’s, where she had the fried chicken, while campaigning in Birmingham.

Earlier this year, it was announced Yo’ Mama would relocate from its 2238 2nd Ave. N. location to 2098 Fourth Avenue North, as part of a City of Birmingham plan to reboot a parking lot ground floor into a restaurant space, with Yo’ Mama’s as the tenant. According to AL.com reporter Greg Garrison, The renovation is expected to cost $1.7 million, with Yo’ Mama’s set to pay around $400,000 of that cost.
