Support floods in for Alabama 10-year-old shot protecting mother in murder-suicide: ‘Our family is hurting’

Friends and family are rallying to a 10-year-old boy who was wounded Sunday night trying to protect his mother as her boyfriend apparently shot and killed her before turning the gun on himself.

Cayson McClung was identified as the child, who is being treated at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.

His school, New Bethel Elementary in Tuscumbia, posted the following message on Facebook:

Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry said officers received a call of a juvenile with a gunshot wound at about 9 p.m. Sunday at Park Place Apartments, No. 805.

Officers arrived to find Cayson with wounds to his arm and face. They also discovered two individuals in the living room, dead with gunshot wounds.

Terry identified them as Ashley Lynn McClung, 38, and Adam Christopher Narmore, 40.

Police believe McClung and Narmore, who Terry said were in a dating relationship, got into an altercation, and Narmore shot Ashley McClung with a .410 shotgun. McClung’s ten-year-old son was wounded trying to protect her. Narmore then apparently killed himself with the shotgun.

According to WAAY, Cayson, still wounded, knocked on a neighbor’s door for help. The neighbor was a Sheffield police officer.

Cayson, described as alert and speaking with officers at the scene, was transferred to Keller Hospital and airlifted to Birmingham.

According to court records, Narmore was scheduled for a bench trial in December on charges of third degree domestic violence. McClung accused him in August of hitting her several times and dragging her by the hair, threatening to shoot her. He had pleaded not guilty.

Nathan Fuller, principal at New Bethel Elementary, described Cayson as a “courageous and brave young man and an outstanding kid,” to WAFF.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to pay for burial expenses for Ashley McClung and medical care for Cayson.

Ashley was remembered as “a wonderful mother who loved her children more than anything in the world and was also a kind, genuine and sincere friend to many.”
