Super Bowl LVIII: How the stateâs players performed
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman with three seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.
Kansas City became the first team to win back-to-back NFL championships since the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
But for Chiefs defensive tackle Neil Farrell Jr., Sunday’s game was his first Super Bowl. He joined Kansas City on Aug. 29 in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. Farrell played in three regular-season games and made his second postseason appearance for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
Farrell became the first player from Murphy High School to play in the NFL’s big game since Jan. 11, 1970. On that date, Jerrel Wilson also was a Super Bowl winner with Kansas City. Wilson punted four times for a 48.5-yard average in the Chiefs’ 23-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
Farrell made one tackle and broke up a pass for Kansas City on Sunday.
One other player from an Alabama high school or college got on the field at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas during Super Bowl LVIII:
· Chiefs defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Forty-Niners tight end Cameron Latu (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) did not record any stats. The rookie played on special teams, including as a gunner on punt coverage. Luter was involved in an unfortunate circumstance in the third quarter when a Kansas City punt hit him on the foot while he was blocking. Luter was charged with a muff, and after the Chiefs recovered the football at the San Francisco 16-yard, they scored a touchdown on the next snap.

Including the playoffs, Kansas City posted a 15-6 record for 2023. San Francisco was 14-6.
