Super Bowl LVII: Is the first Alabama TD at hand?

With the San Francisco 49ers rolling toward their second straight NFL championship, the Denver Broncos finally got something going in the third quarter of Super Bowl XXIV.

On first-and-goal at the San Francisco 1-yard line, Broncos quarterback John Elway handed off to Bobby Humphrey, but the 49ers stacked up the running back for no gain. On the next snap, Humphrey tried again, but San Francisco dropped him for a 2-yard loss.

Those two plays 33 years ago are as close as an Alabama alumnus has come to scoring a touchdown in the 56 Super Bowls.

Bart Starr threw for three touchdowns as the Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls, and Ken Stabler had a TD toss in Super Bowl XI for the Oakland Raiders, but no former Alabama player has run for a touchdown or caught a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

But there appears to be an opportunity for that void to be filled on Sunday, when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

Jalen Hurts ran for 13 touchdowns for the Eagles in 15 games during the regular season, the second-most for a quarterback in one season in NFL history. With two more scores in Philadelphia’s two playoff games, Hurts has more rushing touchdowns in one overall season (regular season plus postseason) than any quarterback in NFL history.

Another Alabama alumnus playing for Philadelphia, wide receiver DeVonta Smith caught seven touchdown passes during the 2022 regular season, and he has another TD reception in the playoffs.

It’s possible that Hurts and Smith could have more rushing attempts and receptions inside the 20-yard line on Sunday than Alabama alumni have had in the other Super Bowls combined.

Besides Humphrey’s goal-line carries, only two other former Crimson Tide ball-carriers have rushing attempts in the red zone in the 56 Super Bowls, and only two former Alabama players have caught passes inside the opponent’s 20-yard line during that span.

During the 2005 regular season, Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander set an NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns. He ran for another two touchdowns in a 34-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship Game.

But in Seattle’s 21-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL on Feb. 5, 2006, the 2005 NFL MVP had one rushing attempt in the red zone – a 4-yard run in the third quarter on a snap at the Steelers 20-yard line.

Fullback Johnny Davis spent one of his 10 NFL seasons with the 49ers, but San Francisco won the Super Bowl that season. During the regular season, Davis scored seven touchdowns on 94 carries, and he scored again on his only rushing attempt in the 49ers’ 28-27 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game for the 1981 campaign.

In San Francisco’s 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI on Jan. 24, 1982, Davis got the football on a third-and-3 snap at the Cincinnati 15-yard line and converted the carry into a first down with a 4-yard gain.

Tight end Howard Cross reached the Buffalo Bills 3-yard line for a 9-yard gain on a third-and-3 pass from quarterback Jeff Hostetler in the New York Giants’ 20-19 victory in Super Bowl XXV on Jan. 27, 1991. But it was Ottis Anderson who scored two snaps later as the Giants took a 17-12 lead with 9:29 left in the third quarter.

In Super Bowl XIX on Jan. 20, 1985, Tony Nathan of the Miami Dolphins became the first running back with at least 10 receptions in a Super Bowl, and it would be 22 years before another running back did it. Since Nathan, three running backs have had at least 10 receptions in a Super Bowl, and each came out a winner. But the Dolphins lost to the San Francisco 49ers 38-16 in Nathan’s landmark game.

The closest that Nathan got to the end zone came on a second-and-10 toss from quarterback Dan Marino at the San Francisco 12-yard line, but the 49ers took him down for a 1-yard loss with 20 seconds left in the first half.

The Eagles and Chiefs will square in Super Bowl LVII at 5:30 p.m. CST Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. FOX will televise the game.
