Will the No. 1 seeds hold and yield a San Francisco 49ers-Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl rematch?
If the Big Game odds posted by the top online sportsbooks are any indication, that’s where we’re headed with the NFL postseason set to kick off this Saturday (Jan. 13).
The top-seeded 49ers (NFC) and Ravens (AFC) are the clear favorites to advance through their respective brackets and meet on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII.
Following, we examine the latest Super Bowl 58 odds and postseason possibilities for the 49ers, Ravens, and the other top contenders — the top three from each conference — entering the playoffs.
2024 Super Bowl odds: San Francisco 49ers (+225 best odds)
The 49ers (12-5) had a league-most nine players voted into the Pro Bowl, but they’re certainly hoping none of them will make it to the Orlando, Fla., festivities.
Instead, they hope to be preparing for the franchise’s eighth Super Bowl appearance in pursuit of the team’s sixth Lombardi Trophy — and first since the 1994-95 season.
Coach Kyle Shanahan’s crew is postseason-tested, with this being their fourth playoff appearance in the last five seasons. The Niners have played in three NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl (2019-20′s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs) during that span.
San Francisco did lose at home to Baltimore, 33-19, in Week 16, so why are the 49ers still atop the current Super odds boards?
It’s primarily the perception that the NFC’s path to the Big Game is less formidable, and the Niners certainly contributed to that narrative during the regular season, going 4-1 against fellow NFC playoff qualifiers, including a 42-10 rout of the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys.
Their only loss was Sunday’s 21-20 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams in a game in which both teams rested many of their top players.
2024 Super Bowl odds: Baltimore Ravens (+330 best odds)
Led by NFL MVP favorite Lamar Jackson and one of the league’s stingiest defenses, the Ravens posted the league’s best regular season record at 13-4.
Baltimore also boasts the league’s top point differential at plus-203 and went 6-3 against fellow playoff qualifiers, including double-digit wins over the 49ers, Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans.
The postseason, though, is an altogether sterner challenge, and the Ravens have plenty to prove on the pre-Super Bowl stage.
Baltimore has gone 1-4 in the playoffs since Jackson’s 2018 rookie season, including a 28-12 divisional-round home upset loss to the Tennessee Titans the last time they were the AFC’s top seed in 2019. In fact, coach John Harbaugh’s crew hasn’t advanced past the divisional round since beating the 49ers in Super XLVII to cap the 2012 season.
Getting back to the Big Game will be far from easy as this year’s AFC playoff bracket profiles as a formidable one.
The No. 2-seeded Buffalo Bills enter the playoff with a league-most five straight wins, while Patrick Mahomes and the third-seeded Kansas City Chiefs have won two of the last four Super Bowls and lost in a third.
2024 Super Bowl odds: Buffalo Bills (+650 best odds)
In winning their fourth straight AFC East title, coach Sean McDermott’s Bills (11-6) are in the postseason tournament for the fifth straight season.
And if the Ravens’ Jackson is the postseason’s most feared QB, Buffalo’s Josh Allen — a 2018 draft classmate — is 1A, having led the league with 4,830 total yards of offense and 44 total TDs, including 15 rushing.
Like Baltimore, though, the Bills have plenty to prove as they’ve gone 4-5 in their five postseason appearances since 2017 and have made it as far as the AFC title game (a 38-24 loss to the Chiefs to end the 2020 season) only once.
2024 Super Bowl odds: Dallas Cowboys (+800 best odds)
The Cowboys (12-5) ranked second to the Ravens with a plus-194 point differential this season and won seven of their final nine games to win the NFC East title and secure the NFC’s No. 2 seed.
That guarantees Dak Prescott and Co., at least two playoff games at home, where they’ve won a league-best 16 straight games dating back to early in the 2022 season. It also places Dallas on the other side of the NFC bracket from the top-seeded 49ers — who have bested the Cowboys three straight times, including in each of the last two postseasons.
Speaking of “America’s Team” and the playoff failure, the Cowboys haven’t advanced past the divisional round since their last Super Bowl triumph at the end of the 1995 season.
2024 Super Bowl odds: Kansas City Chiefs (+1000 best odds)
The Chiefs (11-6) captured their eighth-straight AFC West title and are appearing in a current league-best ninth-straight postseason.
Coach Andy Reid’s has compiled an impressive 11-3 playoff record since Patrick Mahomes assumed the reins in 2018, including the aforementioned pair of Super Bowl titles. However, this postseason sets up differently for K.C.
The Chiefs’ offense is averaging more than a full touchdown less (21.8 points per game, down from 29.2) than it did a season ago.
And as the AFC’s No. 3 seed, the Chiefs are guaranteed only one home playoff game. Going on the road in the postseason would be a totally new experience for Mahomes, who has played all of his 11 previous AFC playoff contests at Arrowhead Stadium, winning nine.
2024 Super Bowl odds: Philadelphia Eagles (+1700 best odds)
The defending NFC champs (11-6) are in the playoffs for a third straight season but stumbled across the finish line, dropping five of their last six games to miss out on the NFC East title and fall to the NFC’s No. 5 seed.
The Eagles’ primary problem is a reeling defense that gave up an average of 30.8 points over its final seven games.
Philly’s top offensive play-makers, including QB Jalen Hurts and top wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, are also dealing with injuries as they prepare for a wild-card matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After a 10-1 start to the season, a return trip to the Big Game looked to be a strong possibility for coach Nick Sirianni’s bunch. But the Birds are staggering into the playoffs, and their Super Bowl odds have fallen accordingly.
