Successful Hoover baseball coach may have to sit out 2023 season

Hoover baseball coach Adam Moseley likely will have to sit out this season after violating an Alabama High School Athletic Association rule, according to sources.

Moseley was the pitching coach on the USA Baseball Under 18 National Team in September. The roster for that team included one of his Hoover players.

According to an AHSAA rule, a coach in any sport cannot coach one of his players in competition outside of season during the school year. Since the games took place in September, a violation took place.

When this happens, according to the AHSAA rule book, it “renders that student or the offending coach ineligible in the sport in which the violation occurred for that school season.”

Sources indicate Hoover is still going through an appeal process that will reach the Central Board of Control on Wednesday. If the appeal is denied, Moseley is expected to sit out the 2023 season to allow his student-athlete to play.

AHSAA teams officially can start practice Monday. The first games can be played Feb. 16. The Bucs are scheduled to play Hueytown in the PBA Alabama Kickoff Classic on Feb. 17.

Neither Moseley nor Hoover athletic director Andy Urban would comment.

Urban did address the Central Board during its July meeting in regard to changing the verbiage of the rule. The Board then went into executive session.

AHSAA executive director Alvin Briggs could not comment on the ongoing appeal.

The USA team won the gold medal.

Among those defending Moseley on social media are former Hoover and Auburn star Sonny DiChiara, Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon and UAB coach Casey Dunn.
