Student with gun at high school in west Alabama taken into custody

A student was taken into custody Friday after they were found with a gun at a high school in west Alabama, authorities said.

The school resource officer at Gordo High School in Pickens County began investigating after school officials were alerted of a possible threat on campus Friday, according to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

The SRO’s “quick actions led to the discovery of a firearm on one student, who was immediately taken into custody within seconds,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office.

The statement suggested the weapon was not discharged and no one was injured.

“Thanks to the rapid response of the school administration and” the officer, “a potentially tragic situation was avoided,” the office said.

“The swift response was crucial in ensuring the safety of all students and staff members,” the statement continued.

Pickens County Sheriff Jordan Powell said authorities have zero tolerance for “this type of behavior and the presence of firearms on school property.

“We will work closely with the District Attorney’s Office to ensure that this case is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the sheriff said.
