Storms brought a shocking amount of rain to Alabama this May
If you think it’s rained a lot in May you are correct.
Some spots in Alabama have gotten double – even triple – the average amount of rain so far this month, and more is on the way.
There are three days to go in the month, but here’s an early look at rainfall amounts for a few Alabama cities, and the average amount in those places for this point in the month (through May 27):
- Birmingham: 10.35 inches; average is 4.28 inches
- Dothan: 4.47 inches; average is 2.46 inches
- Huntsville: 10.88 inches; average is 4.12 inches
- Mobile: 7.73 inches; average is 4.58 inches
- Montgomery: 8.06 inches; average is 3.23 inches
- Tuscaloosa: 13.83 inches; average is 3.27 inches
According to weather service data Tuscaloosa has already had its wettest May on record (at least measured at the airport). No. 2 on the list is 11.13 inches in 1976.
Huntsville currently sits at No. 2 for May rain amounts on record. No. 1 is 11.88 inches in May 1983.

Birmingham’s 2025 May rain currently ranks at No. 4 for the month on record. No. 1 is May 2003, when the city got 17.22 inches.
Montgomery comes in at No. 10. No. 1 is 12.74 inches in 2017.
Some areas could get an inch or two in addition to that before the month is over.

June could bring more above-average rainfall to some parts of the state.
