Storm surveys continue after Jefferson County tornadoes

The National Weather Service is continuing to assess the damage in the Birmingham metro area from weekend severe weather.

The weather service in Birmingham said on Tuesday it is sending out another storm survey team to look at damage in the southern part of Jefferson County, which was hit hard by severe storms late Saturday into early Sunday morning.

The weather service on Sunday confirmed that two short-lived EF-1 tornadoes touched down in the area. One had winds estimated at 90 mph, and the other one had 100 mph winds.

The weather service has also confirmed two other tornadoes hit southeast Alabama on Sunday morning, both EF-0s. The first was in southern Lee County, and the second tracked through Barbour and Henry counties. Those storm surveys had been completed as of Monday night.

There have been no injuries reported from any of the storms.

However, the tornadoes and severe storms left extensive tree damage in Jefferson County from Bessemer area through Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Mountain Brook. Many of those trees fell on homes and vehicles.

The weather service was still working to nail down the tracks of the tornadoes as of Tuesday and hasn’t released completed storm surveys. The surveys are prolonged because of the extent of the damage, according to the weather service.

The weather service on Tuesday said meteorologists plan to visit some locations in Jefferson County that they couldn’t get to over the weekend.

The weather service said updates will be sent out when there is more information.
