Stop using these eye drops immediately, CDC warns
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is doubling down on a warning related to eye drops associated with a recent outbreak of a drug-resistant infection.
In a video, CDC epidemiologist Maroya Walters said people should immediately stop using recalled eye products linked to an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a rare bacteria linked to outbreak among 68 patients in 16 states. Three people have died, 8 have lost their vision and 4 patients had to have their eyeballs removed due to the infection, according to the latest CDC data.
Thirty-seven patients were linked to clusters at four healthcare facilities.
No cases have been reported in Alabama.
The recalled products are EzriCare Artificial Tears, Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma Artificial Eye Ointment. All of the eye products are imported from India-based Global Pharma Healthcare Private Ltd.
People are advised to stop using the products and seek immediate medial attention if they have symptoms of an eye infection:
Symptoms include:
- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
- Eye pain or discomfort
- Redness of the eye or eyelid
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
