Stolen vehicle traffic stop leads to chase, shots fired, manhunt in woods, Midfield police say
An attempted traffic stop on a stolen vehicle ended with shots fired and a manhunt overnight in Midfield.
Just before 8 p.m. Monday, Midfield police officers tried to stop a stolen vehicle near the intersection of Rutledge Drive and Woodward Road.
When they activated their emergency lights and sirens, the suspect vehicle struck a marked patrol vehicle and fled, said Sgt. Michael Jeffries.
Police said officers pursued the vehicle through the city of Midfield into Birmingham, where the suspect vehicle wrecked.
The suspect exited the vehicle and raised an AR pistol while facing a Midfield officer, Jeffries said. The Midfield officer discharged his duty weapon.
The suspect then fled into nearby woods.
Midfield and Birmingham officers secured the scene, and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit was requested.
The suspect was located, uninjured in the woods near the scene a short time later. He is being held in the Midfield City Jail pending formal charges.
“We are grateful no one (citizen, officer, or suspect) was injured in this incident,’’ Jeffries said in an MPD statement. “This is just one example of the dangers officers across this country face every day.”
As is standard practice, the shooting is being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
