Stifler in Alabama: ‘American Pie’ star filming action movie in Birmingham area

Fans of “American Pie” might see a familiar face in Birmingham over the next few weeks. Seann William Scott, who played Steven Stifler in the 1999 sleeper hit, is filming an action movie in the Birmingham area.

Scott, 47, came to fame in “American Pie” as a party-hearty jock with an enticing mom, and appeared as Stifler in three sequels: “American Pie 2,” “American Wedding” and “American Reunion.” Now he’s playing a disgraced cop who’s investigating a small-town murder in “Bad Man.”

Filming for the production has been spotted this week in Adamsville and Graysville, and at least one Stifler sighting has been reported to AL.com.

Jessica Moody, director of programs and operations for Film Birmingham and Create Birmingham, confirmed that filming for “Bad Man” was underway here, and said it will continue for a few weeks, break for the holidays and return in January. Dates for filming listed on the Film & Television Industry Alliance website are Dec. 11, 2023, to Jan. 19, 2024.

The director for “Bad Man” is Michael Diliberti, who also wrote the screenplay with JJ Nelson, according to IMDb. Other members of the cast haven’t been announced.

Here’s the plot of “Bad Man,” as reported by The Cinemaholic:

“Set in Colt Lake, Tennessee, the film revolves around a town gripped by a menacing meth crisis, and the stakes skyrocket when a murder occurs. Deputy Sam Evans, a once-admired local sports star, finds himself thrust into the heart of the investigation, despite having fallen from grace in the eyes of his community. Struggling to be taken seriously, Evans faces an unexpected twist when hotshot Bobby Gaines, an undercover agent from the state’s Special Narcotics Task Force, swoops in as the town’s new hero.

“As the narrative progresses, tensions rise in the small Tennessee town after the unlikely duo teams up to tackle the case. Evans, determined to redeem himself, is forced to collaborate with the charismatic Gaines, who quickly becomes the talk of the town. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly perfect partnership, suspicions arise. ‘Bad Man’ promises a gripping narrative that goes beyond the surface, delving into the complexities of crime, loyalty, and the blurred lines between hero and villain.”

Hemlock Circle Productions and Petri Entertainment are behind the indie movie, according to The Cinemaholic. Producers are Warner Davis, Todd M. Friedman and Brian Levy.

Scott has mentioned his role in “Bad Man” on Instagram, with the hashtags #workinprogress #newbeginning. On Dec. 11, he posted a photo that appears to show him on set in Alabama, with the hashtag #ActorsLife.

Although he’s probably best known as Stifler, Scott has appeared in movies such as “Dude, Where’s My Car?,” “Goon,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “The Rundown,” “Mr. Woodcock,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and more. He voiced the character of Crash in the “Ice Age” animated film franchise, as well.

Scott had a lead role in the “Lethal Weapon” TV series, 2018-2019. His character, Wesley Cole, replaced loose cannon cop Martin Riggs, played by Alabama native Clayne Crawford for the first two seasons of the show. Most recently, Scott has appeared in Fox’s “Welcome to Flatch,” a mockumentary series about life in the small town of Flatch, Ohio.

“Bad Man” is the latest movie to film in the Birmingham area, following Matthew McConaughey’s “The Rivals of Amziah King,” which filmed in several Central Alabama locations in June and July. “Nowhere Men,” a crime thriller starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan of “The Walking Dead” and Jack Quaid of “The Boys,” also filmed in Birmingham this fall.
