Steve Spurrier still wants Florida State in SEC, says Bowden didnât want to play Alabama, Auburn
Count Steve Spurrier among those that want to see Florida State move from the ACC to the SEC.
The former Florida coach has felt that way for years. It’s not just because the Seminoles have voiced their displeasure with the league they currently reside in the midst of a constant conference realignment.
“Yeah, if they come into the SEC, heck, I think that would be good,” Spurrier, now 78, told Mike Bianchi. “And maybe bring Miami or Clemson with them.”
Earlier this month, several Florida State officials and trustees lamented the ACC’s broadcast deal with ESPN.
“It’s not a matter of if we leave (the ACC), in my opinion,” FSU trustee Drew Weatherford said.

Spurrier said the Seminoles should have joined the SEC years ago.
“I think they had a chance [to join the SEC] back right before they joined the ACC,” Spurrier told Bianchi. “And I remember Bobby Bowden said, ‘I don’t wanna play that schedule — Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia.’ Of course their schedule was already tough enough since they played us and Miami.”
In 1990, Florida State reportedly declined a chance to join the SEC and went instead to the ACC. Arkansas and South Carolina joined the SEC.
“I used to sit back and say, ‘How come Alabama and Tennessee are not playing FSU like we have to every year?’” Spurrier said.
