Steve Sarkisian talks SEC, shares Archie Manning’s message to Arch on NIL: He ‘won’t let him take’ it

Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton Manning, can take advantage of all the things that being a quarterback at Texas afford you, except for one.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who met with the Touchdown Club of Houston, shared that Arch Manning’s grandfather, NFL legend Archie Manning, won’t let his grandson accept NIL money.

“His grandpa (Archie) won’t let him take NIL money,” Sarkisian, the former Alabama offensive coordinator, said, per The Houston Chronicle. “He told him, ‘You can take money when you become a player — when you start.’ I thought that was a pretty good message from Archie.”

In fact, NIL was not the reason Arch Manning made Austin his home.

Sarkisian said after he received a call from Arch Manning in June with his decision to sign with Texas, the Longhorns coach got a text from Cooper Manning, Arch’s father, saying the decision had nothing to with NIL.

“He said, ‘if there’s a message to tell any of the other recruits that you’re recruiting, it’s that Arch Manning is coming to Texas because he loves the University of Texas,’” Sarkisian said. “‘He loves the coaches, and he loves the program,’” Sarkisian recalled. “That this was not about NIL, that he’s taking zero money from NIL.”

Sarkisian re-iterated that Quinn Ewers is the starting quarterback, not Arch Manning.

While the SEC is on the horizon, Sarkisian just assume leave it there. There is a Big 12 schedule to play.

“When the SEC thing first came up (in July 2021) … I addressed it and then we moved forward from there,” Sarkisian said. “And now it’s really not an issue. I don’t hear anything about the SEC from our players. They’re focused on winning a Big 12 championship … our focus is on the Big 12 and we’ll deal with the SEC and those challenges when that time comes.”
