Stephen Colbert mocks ‘emotional’ Mike Rogers after lunge at Matt Gaetz: ‘Hormones, I guess’

During his Monday monologue, Stephen Colbert covered the chaotic Speaker vote, which took 15 rounds to elect Kevin McCarthy, and even mocked the Alabama congressman at the center of it.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, was briefly held back by colleagues on the floor of the U.S. House Friday as colleagues again failed to make McCarthy the speaker.

C-SPAN cameras caught a frustrated Rogers appearing to lunge at Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, who was among a faction of lawmakers that repeatedly blocked McCarthy’s nomination. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., then restrained Rogers.

“Oh my God,” Colbert said. “I don’t know if men should hold political office. They’re just too emotional.”

The “Late Show” audience gave a big cheer, as he followed up, “It’s just hormones, I guess. It’s their damn hormones.”

The host then asked to see the moment from another angle and channeled Rogers’ would-be inner pro wrestler.

“I understand pulling away, but why is he covering his mouth? What was Rogers about to say that they had to stop him? ‘Listen, Gaetz, let me tell you something about the ending of season two of The White Lotus’…”

Rogers has since played down the encounter, calling it a “nothing burger.”

Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee later called Alabama’s Rogers a “redneck” and accused Rogers of drinking on the House floor after the altercation, according to reports.

Rogers announced this week he will lead the House of Representatives’ Armed Services Committee Tuesday. He will be the first congressperson from Alabama to chair the committee.
