State sales tax holiday: What severe weather items are tax-free this weekend?

Starting Friday and lasting through Sunday, Alabamians can buy items useful during periods of severe weather without paying sales tax.

Alabama’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday of the last full weekend in February and ends at midnight on the following Sunday. During the event, the state will not charge sales taxes on items used to handle severe weather, including batteries, phone chargers, plywood, and fire extinguishers. Local sales tax may still apply.

This year’s event begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 and ends at midnight on Sunday, Feb. 25.

To qualify, individual items must be $60 or under. Portable generators and power cords used to provide light, communication or preserve food in the event of a power outage, are also eligible, as long as they have a price of $1,000 or less.

Coin batteries and auto and boat batteries are not eligible.
