State prison guard charged with taking illegal drugs to inmate at north Alabama lockup
A north Alabama prison guard has been charged with a felony crime after authorities say she brought illegal drugs in the lockup.
Monica Nicole Blakeney, 35, is charged with second-degree promoting prison contraband, Alabama Department of Corrections officials announced Friday.
Blakeney worked as a correctional security guard at Limestone Correctional Facility.
ADOC spokeswoman Kelly Betts said the agency’s Law Enforcement Services Division and drug-sniffing dogs responded to the facility Wednesday to assist with the arrest of Blakeney.
Charging documents state Blakeney was delivering amphetamines/methamphetamine to an inmate.
Blakeney was booked into the Limestone County Jail Wednesday and released the same day after posting $5,000 bond.
She resigned from her position, Betts said.
“The ADOC takes any breach of its policies and procedures very seriously,’’ said ADOC Commissioner John Hamm, “and will continue to work diligently to ensure a safe and secure environment for both staff and inmates.”
