State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith: Netflix documentary focuses on Alabama murder case

A new Netflix documentary airing in November focuses on Brittany Smith, the north Alabama woman convicted of killing the man she says attacked and raped her in her home.

“State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith” by director Ryan White and producer Jessica Hargrave begins streaming Nov. 10. It tells “the harrowing story of a woman trying to use Alabama’s Stand Your Ground law after killing a man she says brutally attacked her,” the network said.

The law says that “a person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and is any place where he or she has the right to be, has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground.”

Smith testified in court that Todd Smith (no relation) was holding her brother, Chris McCallie, in a headlock and threatening to kill them all when she fired the gun at him. She also testified that Todd Smith had raped and strangled her earlier in the night at her home in Stevenson.

“I did what I thought I had to do,” Brittany Smith says in the trailer for the documentary. “Because if I wouldn’t have, my brother and I both would be dead.”

AL.com reporter Ashley Remkus covered Smith’s arrest and trial and is also in the documentary. Remkus says in the Netflix trailer that the case asked the question, “Are women able to use the system to defend themselves in the way that men are?”

Smith pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, split to include 18 months in the Jackson County Jail and 18 months on house arrest. She was released after getting credit for time spent in jail awaiting trial.

White and Hargrave were nominated for an Emmy for their 2017 docuseries “The Keepers.” Remkus was part of the Alabama Media Group team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2021 for a yearlong investigation of K-9 units and the damage that police dogs inflict on Americans.
