State NFL Week 1: Tyreek Hill joins Don Hutson, Jerry Rice
One of the best season-opening performances by a pass-catcher in NFL history allowed the Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill to post his name alongside some of the best wide receivers in the league’s history on Sunday.
In the Dolphins’ 36-34 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, Hill had 11 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns.
The former West Alabama standout caught TD passes of 35 yards with 2:12 left in the third quarter and 4 yards with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Both touchdowns put Miami the lead, with the second setting the final margin.
In the third 200-yard game of his career, Hill had receptions that gained 47, 35, 30, 29 and 28 yards as he piled up the third-most receiving yards in a season-opening game in NFL history.
The game was the third of Hill’s career in which he had at least 200 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions. The only player in NFL history with more is former Alabama star Don Hutson with four. Charlie Hennigan also had three such games.
Hill also recorded the 10th game of his career with at least 10 receptions and 150 receiving yards. He’s now tied with Antonio Brown, Andre Johnson, Julio Jones and Jerry Rice for the most such games in NFL history.
The only players who have had more receiving yards in a season-opening game than Hill did on Sunday are Frank Clarke, who had 10 receptions for 241 yards and three touchdowns in the Dallas Cowboys’ 35-35 tie with the Washington Redskins on Sept. 16, 1962; and Anquan Boldin, who had 10 receptions for 217 yards and two touchdowns in the Arizona Cardinals’ 42-24 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7, 2003.
