State NFL roundup: Texans get winning TD from Tank Dell

Wide receiver Tank Dell caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud with six seconds to play to lift the Houston Texans to a 39-37 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Dell’s second touchdown reception of the game produced the fifth lead change of the contest.

Dell had caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Stroud with 5:59 left in the third quarter that pulled the Texans within one point of the lead at 23-22. With their kicker injured, Houston went for 2 after that touchdown but did not succeed.

Dell caught six passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, had 2 yards on two rushing attempts, returned a punt 7 yards and ran back two kickoffs for 44 yards against the Buccaneers.

Dell began his college career at Alabama A&M, then transferred to Independence Community College and on to the University of Houston before joining the Texans in the third round of the NFL Draft on April 27.

In his seventh NFL game, Dell has his second 100-yard performance. In a 37-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 24, Dell has five receptions for 145 yards and one touchdown.

Dell was among the 32 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the ninth Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.

Six other former state players were involved in the Tampa Bay-Houston game:

· Nico Collins (Clay-Chalkville) started at wide receiver for the Texans. Collins caught three passes for 54 yards and one touchdown. Collins caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud for Houston’s first points with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

· Tytus Howard (Monroe County, Alabama State) started at left guard for the Texans.

· Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Alabama State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers wide receiver Cephus Johnson III (Davidson, South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers guard Logan Stenberg (James Clemens) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jimmie Ward (Davidson) started at safety for the Texans. Ward made two tackles before leaving the game with a hamstring injury.

In the other Sunday games:

Kansas City Chiefs 21, Miami Dolphins 14

· Chiefs defensive tackle Neil Farrell Jr. (Murphy) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Hill had eight receptions for 62 yards and one rushing attempt for 3 yards.

· Chiefs quarterback Chris Oladokun (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine (Theodore) had a 1-yard run in his first NFL regular-season action since the 2021 season. Perine was elevated from the practice squad to make him eligible to play.

· Chiefs tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross (Central-Phenix City) is on the Commissioner Exempt List and not eligible to play.

· Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (Blount) had an 18-yard reception.

· Chiefs wide receiver Montrell Washington (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Minnesota Vikings 31, Atlanta Falcons 28

· Falcons defensive lineman Travis Bell (Jeff Davis) was designated as a game-day inactive. Atlanta signed Bell from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad on Wednesday.

· Falcons inside linebacker Tae Davis (Oxford) did not record any stats. Davis returned to the field after missing the previous game because of a concussion.

· Vikings running back DeWayne McBride (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens (Spain Park) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Baltimore Ravens 37, Seattle Seahawks 3

· Ravens guard Tyrell Doss (Aliceville) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Seahawks quarterback Mike Jackson (Spain Park) did not record any stats.

· James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) started at safety for the Eagles. Bradberry made six tackles and broke up one pass.

· Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) started at linebacker for the Eagles. Cunningham led Philadelphia with 10 tackles, recorded one tackle for loss and broke up one pass.

· Eagles linebacker Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) made two tackles and registered one quarterback hit.

· Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Cowboys. Tolbert had three receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown. Tolbert scored the first touchdown of his NFL career on a 7-yard pass from quarterback Dak Prescott with 6:23 to play.

Cincinnati Bengals 24, Buffalo Bills 18

· Bengals cornerback Allan George (Andalusia) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Bengals kicker Evan McPherson (Fort Payne) made his four kicks – a 20-yard field goal and three extra points.

· Bills cornerback Siran Neal (Eufaula, Jacksonville State) did no record any stats.

· Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) started at cornerback for the Bengals. Taylor-Britt made two tackles and intercepted a pass. Taylor-Britt made his third interception in four games when he picked off Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen at the Buffalo 32-yard line in the first quarter.

Week 9 started on Thursday night, when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Tennessee Titans 20-16.

Week 9 concludes on Monday, when the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets square off at 7:15 p.m. CST at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.
