State NFL roundup: Quincy Williams makes Pro Bowl case

Former Alabama All-American Quinnen Williams went to the Pro Bowl Games as a New York Jets defensive tackle last season. This season, his brother chasing that all-star honor. And with fan voting closing on Monday and players and coaches set to vote on Friday, Jets linebacker Quincy Williams made a final statement on Sunday.

During New York’s 30-28 victory over the Washington Commanders, Quincy Williams led the Jets with eight tackles, recorded two tackles for loss, intercepted one pass and broke up another.

Williams picked off a pass by Washington quarterback Sam Howell for his first NFL interception. An 11-yard return by Williams put the Jets on the Washington 22-yard line with 8:00 left in the third quarter, but New York failed to build on its 27-7 lead by turning over the ball.

Williams has 124 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2023.

Quinnen and Quincy Williams are former Wenonah High School standouts. Quincy Williams went to Murray State before entering the NFL as the 98th selection in the 2019 draft. Quinnen Williams was the third pick in that draft.

Quincy Williams was among the 23 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the 16th Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.

Four other former state players were involved in the Washington-New York game:

· Jets cornerback Tae Hayes (Decatur) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jets defensive end Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) made one tackle and broke up one pass.

· Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves (South Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Commanders offensive tackle Trent Scott (Lee-Huntsville) did not record any stats.

In the other Sunday games:

Green Bay Packers 33, Carolina Panthers 30

· Panthers running back Spencer Brown (Mortimer Jordan, UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Panthers linebacker Tae Davis (Oxford) made one special-teams tackle.

· Packers wide receiver Grant DuBose (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Packers cornerback Zyon Gilbert (Jeff Davis) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Panthers wide Jordan Matthews (Madison Academy) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Packers offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Cleveland Browns 36, Houston Texans 22

· Nico Collins (Clay-Chalkville) started at wide receiver for the Texans. Collins had four receptions for 18 yards and one touchdown. Collins caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Davis Mills as Houston reduced Cleveland’s lead to 36-15 with 6:08 to play.

· Texans wide receiver Tank Dell (Alabama A&M) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Browns linebacker Mohamoud Diabate (Auburn High) made one tackle on special teams.

· Texans guard Tytus Howard (Monroe County, Alabama State) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Za’Darius Smith (Greenville) started at defensive end for the Browns. Smith recorded two sacks, registered four quarterback hits and broke up a pass. With the 11th multiple-sack game of his career, Smith boosted his career total to 60 sacks.

· Jimmie Ward (Davidson) started at safety for the Texans. Ward made one tackle before leaving with a quadriceps injury.

· Browns wide receiver Austin Watkins (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns defensive end Alex Wright (Elba, UAB) recorded one sack and broke up one pass. Wright has had a sack in back-to-back games.

Detroit Lions 30, Minnesota Vikings 24

· Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin (Northridge, North Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Vikings running back DeWayne McBride (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Nick Mullens (Spain Park) started at quarterback for the Vikings. Mullens completed 22-of-36 passes for 411 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Mullens threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Justin Jefferson as Minnesota cut the Lions’ lead to 17-14 with 29 seconds left in the first half and a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver K.J. Osborn as the Vikings took a 21-17 lead with 11:56 left in the third quarter. Mullens produced the sixth game in the NFL this season with 400 passing yards and the third with four interceptions. Mullens had the 16th game in NFL history in which a player had at least 400 passing yards and four interceptions. On Minnesota’s final snap of the game, Mullens was picked off at the Detroit 5-yard line on a first-and-10 throw from the Lions 30 with 49 seconds to play.

Seattle Seahawks 20, Tennessee Titans 17

· Titans defensive tackle Shakel Brown (Troy) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Eric Garror (McGill-Toolen) started at defensive back for th Titans. Garror made two tackles and broke up one pass.

· Titans offensive lineman Chris Hubbard (UAB) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Mike Jackson (Spain Park) started at cornerback for the Seahawks. Jackson made four tackles.

· Titans offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons (Selma) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30, Jacksonville Jaguars 12

· Josh Allen (Abbeville) started at outside linebacker for the Jaguars. Allen made one tackle and registered one quarterback hit.

· Jaguars offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Jaguars defensive end DJ Coleman (Jacksonville State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Alabama State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers wide receiver Cephus Johnson III (Davidson, South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Buccaneers guard Logan Stenberg (James Clemens) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Miami Dolphins 22, Dallas Cowboys 20

· Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Hill returned from a one-game absence because of an ankle injury with nine receptions for 99 yards.

· Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) caught two passes for 51 yards, including a 45-yarder, the longest reception of his career.

· Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) made two tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

New England Patriots 26, Denver Broncos 23

· Patriots center Jake Andrews (Stanhope Elmore, Troy) did not record any stats.

· Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Broncos cornerback Tremon Smith (Saks) did not record any stats.

Week 16 started on Thursday night, when the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the New Orleans Saints 30-22, and continued on Saturday, when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 34-11 and the Buffalo Bills defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-22.

Week 16 concludes on Monday, with three games – Las Vegas Raiders-Kansas City Chiefs at noon CST on CBS and Nickelodeon, New York Giants-Philadelphia Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on FOX and Baltimore Ravens-San Francisco 49ers on ABC.
