State NFL roundup: Hoover star over 100 yards again

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens had one 100-yard receiving game as a second-round rookie last season.

On Sunday in the Steelers’ 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, Pickens had his third 100-yard receiving game of the 2023 campaign and his second in a row.

The former Hoover High School standout had five receptions for 107 yards against the Rams.

Pickens had a 21-yard reception on Pittsburgh’s tiebreaking, fourth-quarter touchdown drive and a 31-yard reception that helped the Steelers run out the final 5:28 of the game.

In Pittsburgh’s previous game, Pickens had six receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown in a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 8.

Pickens was among the 28 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the seventh Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.

One other former state player was involved in the Pittsburgh-Los Angeles game:

· Kwon Alexander (Oxford) started at linebacker for the Steelers. Alexander made two tackles.

· Ravens guard Tyrell Doss (Aliceville) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin (Northridge, North Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Michael Pierce (Daphne, Samford) started at nose tackle for the Ravens. Pierce made two tackles.

Chicago Bears 30, Las Vegas Raiders 12

· Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood) did not record any stats.

· Bears defensive tackle Travis Bell (Jeff Davis) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Raiders cornerback Jakorian Bennett (McGill-Toolen) was designated as a game-day inactive. Bennett did not practice on Friday because of shoulder and knee injuries.

· Bears fullback Khari Blasingame (Buckhorn) had a 4-yard reception.

· Bears wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (Saraland) returned two kickoffs for 49 yards and made one tackle on special teams.

· Bears cornerback Christian Matthew (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Darnell Mooney (Gadsden City) started at wide receiver for the Bears. Mooney had four receptions for 32 yards.

· Raiders outside linebacker Malik Reed (Dothan) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Cleveland Browns 39, Indianapolis Colts 38

· Browns linebacker Mohamoud Diabate (Auburn High) made one tackle on special teams.

· Za’Darius Smith (Greenville) started at defensive end for the Browns. Smith made four tackles, recorded one sack, registered two quarterback hits and forced one fumble. Smith had a strip sack of Indianapolis quarterback Gardner Minshew that Cleveland recovered with two seconds to play.

· Browns wide receiver Austin Watkins (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns defensive end Alex Wright (Elba, UAB) did not record any stats.

New England Patriots 29, Buffalo Bills 25

· Patriots center Jake Andrews (Stanhope Elmore, Troy) did not record any stats.

· Patriots quarterback Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers (Columbia) is on reserve/physically unable to perform and not eligible to play.

· Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Bills cornerback Siran Neal (Eufaula, Jacksonville State) did not record any stats.

· Cor’Dale Flott (Saraland) started at cornerback for the Giants. Flott tied his career high with five tackles.

· Packers wide receiver Grant DuBose (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Broncos cornerback Tremon Smith (Saks) did not record any stats.

· Packers offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Kansas City Chiefs 31, Los Angeles Chargers 17

· Gerald Everett (UAB/South Alabama) started at tight end for the Chargers. Everett had three receptions for 26 yards and one touchdown. Everett scored for the second straight game when he caught a 7-yard touchdown pass as Los Angeles tied the score at 17-17 with 7:06 left in the first half. Everett sustained a quad injury in the game.

· Chiefs defensive tackle Neil Farrell Jr. (Murphy) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Chargers safety A.J. Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) did not record any stats.

· Chiefs quarterback Chris Oladokun (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine (Theodore) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Week 7 started on Thursday night, when the Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the New Orleans Saints 31-24.

Week 7 concludes on Monday, when the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings square off at 7:15 p.m. CDT at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.
