State NFL roundup: Former UAB DB extends INT streak

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won three games in a row, and cornerback Darious Williams has had an interception in each of them.

In the Jaguars’ 37-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the former UAB defensive back made three tackles, intercepted one pass and broke up another.

Williams intercepted Indianapolis quarterback Gardner Minshew in the end zone on a fourth-and-5 throw from the Jacksonville 15-yard line with 11:06 remaining in the game.

In Jacksonville’s 25-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 8, Williams tied for the team lead with seven tackles, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble. Williams intercepted Buffalo QB Josh Allen at the Jaguars 7-yard line at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London with the Jaguars leading 11-7 with 13:09 to play. Williams forced a fumble on the Bills’ final snap of the game, which Jacksonville recovered with 13 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

In the Jaguars’ 25-7 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 1, Williams made five tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up two others. Williams returned the interception 61 yards for a touchdown as Jacksonville took a 17-0 lead with 4:31 left in the first half.

Williams was among the 36 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the sixth Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.

Four other former state players were involved in the Indianapolis-Jacksonville game:

· Josh Allen (Abbeville) started at weakside linebacker for the Jaguars. Allen had four tackles, one sack and two quarterback hits. On the sack, Allen caused Indianapolis quarterback Gardner Minshew to fumble, and Jacksonville recovered at the Colts 22-yard line. The turnover set up a touchdown as the Jaguars took a 14-3 lead with 14:01 left in the first half. Allen has seven sacks and three forced fumbles this season.

· Jaguars offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars defensive end DJ Coleman (Jacksonville State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars center Darryl Williams (Bessemer City) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Baltimore Ravens 24, Tennessee Titans 16

· Titans defensive tackle Shakel Brown (Troy) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Bears wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (Saraland) had a 5-yard reception, two rushing attempts for 15 yards and three kickoff returns for 90 yards, including a 37-yarder.

· Bears cornerback Christian Matthew (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Vikings running back DeWayne McBride (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Darnell Mooney (Gadsden City) started at wide receiver for the Bears. Mooney had two receptions for 48 yards, including a 39-yarder.

Cincinnati Bengals 17, Seattle Seahawks 13

· Bengals cornerback Allan George (Andalusia) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Seahawks cornerback Mike Jackson (Spain Park) did not record any stats.

· Bengals kicker Evan McPherson (Fort Payne) made a 52-yard field goal for the game’s final points with 11:47 left to play. McPherson made his other two kicks, too, connecting on a pair of extra points.

· Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) started at cornerback for the Bengals. Taylor-Britt made seven tackles, intercepted one pass and broke up two others. Taylor-Britt made the first regular-season interception of his career last week in Cincinnati’s 34-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The former prep quarterback made it two in a row when he picked off Seattle quarterback Geno Smith in the fourth quarter and returned it 24 yards to the Seahawks 37-yard line to set up Evan McPherson’s field goal for the final score of the game.

Cleveland Browns 19, San Francisco 49ers 17

· Browns linebacker Mohamoud Diabate (Auburn High) did not record any stats.

· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) is on reserve/physically unable to perform and not eligible to play.

· Za’Darius Smith (Greenville) started at defensive end for the Browns. Smith registered one quarterback hit.

· Browns wide receiver Austin Watkins (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns defensive end Alex Wright (Elba, UAB) made one tackle.

Houston Texans 20, New Orleans Saints 13

· Nico Collins (Clay-Chalkville) started at wide receiver for the Texans. Collins caught four passes for 80 yards. He also caused a fumble after an interception that Houston recovered.

· Texans wide receiver Tank Dell (Alabama A&M) was designated as a game-day inactive. Dell missed the game because of a concussion.

· Tytus Howard (Monroe County, Alabama State) started at left guard for the Texans. Howard recovered a fumble after interception, too.

· Jimmie Ward (Davidson) started at safety for the Texans. Ward made seven tackles.

· Saints quarterback Jameis Winston (Hueytown) dressed but did not play.

Miami Dolphins 42, Carolina Panthers 21

· Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Hill had six receptions for 163 yards and one touchdown. He scored on a 41-yard reception as Miami took a 21-14 lead with 1:54 left in the first half. With 814 receiving yards this season, Hill has the second-most for a player in his team’s first six games of a season, behind the 819 of Don Hutson in 1942. Hill is the first player to record at least 150 receiving yards in four of his team’s first six games in a season.
