State NFL roundup: Former prep star shines for Texans

The Houston Texans dropped to 0-2 for the 2023 NFL season on Sunday, when they lost to the Indianapolis Colts 31-20. But the silver lining for the Texans was provided by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who threw for 384 yards and two touchdowns in his second NFL game.

Stroud threw touchdown passes to former Clay-Chalkville High School star Nico Collins and Tank Dell, who began his college career at Alabama A&M.

Collins enjoyed the best game of his NFL career, and Dell’s touchdown was his first in the league.

Collins caught seven passes for 146 yards and one touchdown. Collins had receptions that gained 32, 28, 25, 24 and 20 yards as he recorded his first 100-yard game and set a single-game career high for receptions.

Collins scored on an 8-yard reception as Houston cut Indianapolis’ lead to 14-7 with 3:14 left in the first quarter.

A third-round rookie, Dell caught seven passes for 72 yards and returned a kickoff 13 yards.

In his second NFL game, Dell scored on a 23-yard connection with Stroud for the game’s final touchdown with 9:48 to play.

Collins and Dell were among the 33 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the second Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.
