‘Star Wars’, ‘Magic: the Gathering’ artwork focus of Alabama exhibit
Getting the fur right is one of the hardest things about painting a Wookiee, says Donato Giancola.
“And that’s just one of many things that I found as a major challenge in that painting,” he says, referring to “Star Wars Galaxies,” his 2003 oil on panel depicting a trio of intergalactic adventures amidst a Tatooine-esque scene.
That piece is among the more than 70 works featured in “Donato Giancola: Adventures in Imagination,” a new Huntsville Museum of Art exhibit opening Oct. 30 and running through Jan. 22
In addition to “Star Wars” related visuals, like “Galaxies” originally commissioned for usage by LucasArts video games, the exhibit features “Dungeons & Dragons,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Game of Thrones” and “Magic: The Gathering” imagery.
“You’ve got to make it look good, make it look cool,” Giancola says of commercial art for sci-fi and fantasy. “You’ve got to tell a story. At least for me, I love telling stories. So that’s the whole point of this exhibit is to tell stories.”
