Stallions’ Bo Scarbrough retiring from football, report says

Birmingham Stallions running back Bo Scarbrough is retiring from football, the Bama Standard Network said via its X account on Friday.

The Bama Standard Network includes a podcast that features Scarbrough as one of its contributors, along with Steve Brown, Marvin Constant, Justin Riley and Stephen M. Smith.

On Friday night, Scarbrough shared social-media messages congratulating him on his retirement via his Instagram account, including one from his mother.

“Our brother and Alabama legend Bo Scarbrough has officially retired from football,” the Bama Standard Network message read. “Congratulations Bo on a job well done! We’re proud of you! May God bless this next chapter of your journey immeasurably more!”

Scarbrough played in the Stallions’ season-opening game in 2023 before a knee injury sent him to the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign.

When asked about Scarbrough as Birmingham opened UFL training camp last week, Stallions coach Skip Holtz said on Feb. 28: “Bo is still trying to recover a little bit from the knee. Bo has had a couple of surgeries on that knee. He ran around; he looked good yesterday. But right now, it’s probably going to be a process where I just don’t know how much he can go day in and day out.”

Scarbrough prepped at Northridge in Tuscaloosa before spending his final high school season at IMG Academy in Florida.

Scarbrough played on two CFP national-championship teams during his three seasons at Alabama. He ran for 1,512 yards and 20 touchdowns on 267 carries and caught 21 passes for 131 yards for the Crimson Tide.

Scarbrough’s top game for Alabama came in a 24-7 victory over Washington in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31, 2016. Scarbrough ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries against the Huskies.

The victory propelled the Crimson Tide to the CFP national-championship game for the 2016 season. Scarbrough scored the game’s first two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 37 yards on his way to 93 yards on 16 carries, but Alabama lost to Clemson 35-31 on Jan. 9, 2017.

Scarbrough joined the Dallas Cowboys as a seventh-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft. He also spent time on the rosters of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders. In seven NFL regular-season games, Scarbrough ran for 408 yards and one touchdown on 95 carries.

Scarbrough joined the Stallions in the fifth game of the 2022 season and ran for 352 yards and one touchdown on 84 carries to finish 10th in the league in rushing despite playing in only six regular-season games.

In Birmingham’s 33-30 victory over the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL Championship Game on July 3, 2022, Scarbrough had 135 yards and one touchdown on 13 rushing attempts.
