St. Louis keeps AJ McCarron as QB option for its next game

St. Louis Battlehawks quarterback AJ McCarron finished Saturday’s United Football League showdown with the Birmingham Stallions playing on an injured left ankle.

The Battlehawks don’t know yet if the former Alabama All-American will be able to stay in the lineup for their game against the D.C. Defenders on Sunday, but coach Anthony Becht, when he met with reporters on Monday, did not say McCarron wouldn’t play.

“AJ’s day-to-day,” Becht said. “That’s where we’re at. We’ll see what it looks like each day. We’ll have a conversation. At this point, he’s not ruled out just because we got some information that will lead us to monitor his situation here as we move forward.”

St. Louis’ other quarterbacks are Brandon Silvers and Manny Wilkins.

“All three quarterbacks will get reps,” Becht said about the Battlehawks’ preparation plans. “We’re going to have to prepare for every angle. Last year, we had our backup play a game after an injury. We made a decision not to play (McCarron), pull him back and to rest him. We were able to get through that game and win against Vegas at home.

“We’ll see where we are. We need to prepare accordingly, but all hands on deck this week. That’s kind of how we’ll go about it and prepare for D.C.”

Like McCarron, Silvers is a former Alabama high school star. McCarron played at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile, and Silvers played at Gulf Shores.

Silvers went on to have a record-setting career as a four-year starter at Troy. Since then, Silvers has started games for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football in 2019, Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in 2020, the Conquerors of the Spring League in 2021 and the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2023 before joining St. Louis in 2024.

“When you look at Brandon, he’s a guy that’s going to stand in there,” Becht said. “He’s going to read the defense, and he’s going to get the ball to the right guy 95 percent of the time.”

Wilkins is in his second season with the Battlehawks.

“Manny’s got a really good, unique skill set,” Becht said. “Clearly he has a lot of mobility to his game, but he is a pocket-passer quarterback first. He’s done some really good things in practice. He gives our defense a really good look. There are a lot of elements of his game that you see maybe in other quarterbacks like (the Birmingham Stallions’) Adrian Martinez. That kind of skill set. Now he’s not as big and as thick as Adrian. But again, very smart, intelligent, knows our system.”

McCarron has completed 154-of-231 passes for 1,467 yards with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He has more four touchdown passes than any other player in the United Football League.

St. Louis lost to Birmingham 30-26 on Saturday. While the Stallions improved to 7-0 and have clinched a postseason berth, the Battlehawks dropped to 5-2 and back into a tie for the top spot in the XFL Conference with the San Antonio Brahmas.

St. Louis defeated San Antonio 31-24 on April 14 and will close the regular season against the Brahmas on June 1.

The Battlehawks play the Defenders at 11 a.m. CST Sunday at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. ABC will televise the game.

The Battlehawks beat D.C. 45-12 on April 28. If St. Louis defeats the Defenders again, the Battlehawks would clinch a postseason position.

“At this point, we’re going to continue to just monitor the situation,” Becht said about St. Louis’ quarterback outlook for Sunday. “They’ll all get reps.”
