Spring sports roundup: Westminster Christian no-hits Lee-Huntsville
Riley Friend struck out 15 in a five-inning no-hitter to lift Westminster Christian to a 10-0 win over Lee-Huntsville on Thursday. Friend, a junior, threw 84 pitches in the win and walked three batters. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a double for the Wildcats (5-1).
Senior Lawson Collier was also 2-for-3 for Westminster with a triple and an RBI. He also scored the run that ended the game with the 10-run rule, racing home on a wild pitch.
On Saturday, the Wildcats earned a 7-4 win at Ardmore with junior Trey Perkins picking up the win on the mound. Perkins gave up 3 runs on 5 hits, striking out 4 in 5 innings.
Jackson Lange gave up a run on 2 hits in the sixth inning and Sean Lapinskes shut out the Tigers in the seventh on a hit with a pair of strikeouts.
Friend went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Westminster.
The Wildcats trailed 2-0 before scoring a run in the fourth inning and 4 in the fifth. Westminster added another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Madison County 5, Colbert County 4
The Tigers pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to win the home game over Colbert County on Saturday. Madison County’s Nick Sharp scored the game-winner after he walked, went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a single by Branden Reed and scored on Nick Broadbent’s single.
Lead-off hitter Memphis Scott went 1-for-3 with a home run and scored twice for Madison County. Jace Duckett went 2-for-4 with a double and Jake Thornton had a double in three at-bats with an RBI. Connor Drake was 1-for-2 and Broadbent singled, drove in the game-winning run and drew a walk.
Thornton earned the win on the mound, striking out all six batters he faced over 2 innings. Riley Tipton threw 7 innings, striking out 7 and giving up 4 runs – 1 earned – on 7 hits.
Dylan Castle went 2-for-4 for Colbert County. Westley Chaney tripled and scored a pair of runs.
Caleb Stafford took the loss in relief, allowing a run on 2 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks. Castle struck out 4 over 2.1 innings in relief of starter Chaney, who gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 5 innings with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Also on Saturday, Madison County beat Wilson 5-1 in Florence, scoring 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The teams scored a run apiece in the first.
Scott doubled twice in 3 at-bats and scored a pair of runs for Madison County. Duckett drove in 3 runs with 2 doubles in 4 at-bats. Cole Mullins had the Tigers’ only other hit.
Drake pitched 4 shutout innings in relief of starter Sharp to earn the win. He struck out 2 and allowed 3 hits. Sharp gave up 2 hits and an earned run with 2 walks and a strikeout in 1 inning. Keigan McClure struck out 3 over the final 2 innings.
Starter Bryson Pickens took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks over 4 innings.
Eli Smith was 2-for-3 for Wilson with an RBI.
James Clemens 7, Shelby County 5
The Jets improved to 9-2 on the season with a pair of wins on Saturday, beating Shelby County 7-5 and Cade McComb no-hit East Limestone in a 9-1 win.
James Clemens scored 4 runs in the bottom of the second to rally from a 3-0 deficit against Shelby County. After the Jets scored a single run in the fourth, the visitors pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth to knot the score. James Clemens got a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to the win.
Starter Luke Davenport, an Auburn University commitment, picked up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 3 hits over 2 innings with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Matthew Drinkwater struck out 9 in 5 innings of relief. He allowed 2 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits.
Third baseman Ty Marsh, batting second, went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the winners. Leadoff hitter Carson Loosier was 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Three of the bottom five batters in the order delivered singles for James Clemens.
Starter Cooper Pennington took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing 4 earned runs on 1 hit with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 2 innings. Tucker Busby gave up 3 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Colby Matherson, Nathan Owen, Gannon Pharr, Pennington, Busby and Davis Ruston had hits for Shelby County.
In the win over East Limestone, McComb allowed an unearned run, struck out 8 batters and walked 2.
Loosier went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Ty Marsh and Benjamin Graves also had doubles. Graves drove in 2 runs. Hayden Markfort was 1-for-1 with 2 runs scored.
Cade Parham took the loss for East Limestone, allowing 5 runs – 4 earned – on 3 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Noah Workman struck out 4 in 3 innings of relief, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits.
On Friday, James Clemens topped Huntsville 5-2 as Satchel Wheeler struck out 6 in 6 innings, allowing an earned run on 5 hits.
David Sharp went 1-for-2 with a triple and 3 runs scored for the Jets. Loosier went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Mason Busch worked 1 inning in relief, striking out 3 while allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits.
Brody King took the loss for Huntsville, allowing 4 runs – 2 earned – on 2 hits with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Sims Bowman gave up a run on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
William Carter and Wyatt Howell were 2-for-3 at the plate. Howell doubled and scored both of the Panthers’ runs. Dylan Duster also had a double and a triple.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Baker 9, Gulf Breeze (Fla.) 0
Bryant Durbin shut out Gulf Breeze, Fla., at home with a 7-inning performance. He struck out 4 and gave up 6 hits on the day. Durbin also helped his cause at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Camden Payne went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double, 2 RBIs and scored twice. Connor Gatwood was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and shortstop Ethan Santos was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Damon Fountain went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Spencer Stewart was 1-for-2 with 2 runs.
Also at home on Saturday, the Hornets beat Theodore 15-4 with Bryson Sudduth picking up the win. He allowed 3 runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts in 4 innings. Ransen Alexander allowed 1 run on 2 hits in an inning on the mound.
Santos was 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored 4 runs. Gatwood drove in 4 runs with a pair of doubles and a triple. He was 3-for-3 at the plate. Fountain went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Durbin drove in a run and was 2-for-3 with a triple. Micah Cornelius went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Peyton Buck was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Saraland 8-10, T.R. Miller 1-4
The Spartans swept a home double-header on Saturday over T.R. Miller to win their seventh game in the past eight outings and improve to 7-4 on the year.
Saraland’s Cooper Henson struck out 8 in 4.2 innings in the opener. D’Tric Butler struck out 2 in an inning of relief.
Camron Laffitte, Henson and Hudson Robbins all had RBI doubles in the win. Santae McWilliams and Evan Hilliard had a pair of hits and a run scored each.
Jacob Rowell earned the win in the nightcap, with a strikeout in 3 innings. Daniel Osborne struck out 3 in 2 innings and Jaxon Roberts closed out the win with a pair of strikeouts in 3 innings.
Hilliard had a 2-run double and Brooks Womble had an RBI double for Saraland. Laffitte doubled and scored a run with McWilliams collecting 3 RBIs.
On Friday, Saraland got a 3-1 home win over Baldwin County with Cam Warren earning the win. Warren struck out 5, allowing 1 run in 4 innings. Laffitte struck out 4 and allowed no runs over 3 innings in relief.
Fuller Chisholm, Mike Smith and Jamison Curtis all had an RBI.
Bayshore Christian 4-6, W.S. Neal 2-5
Bayshore swept a double-header over W.S. Neal in a battle of Eagles on Saturday at Coastal Church in Daphne.
Nate Crooms picked up the win in Game 1, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Braden Preus got a save with a shutout seventh inning.
Jace Jones had a pair of hits and scored twice for the winners.
In Game 2, Bayshore got a walk-off win in the eighth inning on a single by Jack Wheeler. Bayshore trailed 5-3 before tying the game in the seventh.
Reliever Jace Jones earned the win with scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Jack Malone struck out 5 in 5 innings and allowing 3 runs.
Cory Parker had 2 hits and 2 runs scored in the win.

SOFTBALL
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Madison Academy 14, New Hope 1
Cat Schreiber struck out 13 as the Mustangs downed New Hope on the road. She did not allow an earned run and walked 1 over 7 innings. Schreiber also drove in a pair of runs, going 1-for-4 with a walk at the plate.
Emily Burgreen went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Breelyn Kilpatrick was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Evie Stephenson was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored. Memphis Houston was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and Ryan McBride was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Gracie Champion had a pair of RBIs, as did Madeline Taylor.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Orange Beach 4, Wicksburg 2
The Makos picked up a pair of wins in the USA-Florida Challenge at Frank Brown Park in Panama City, Fla., on Saturday, to improve to 4-0 on the year. Orange Beach beat Marianna, Fla., 7-0 in the first game.
Kaitlynn Robertson earned the win against Wicksburg, pitching 4.1 innings allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits. She struck out 5. KG Favors allowed 1 hit with 4 strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Ava Hodo led Orange Beach at the plate with 2 home runs in 3 at-bats. She had 3 RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
Against Marianna, Hodo homered and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Daigle Wilson went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. She scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Teagan Revette went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Taylor Poland was also 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Favors struck out 8 and allowed 3 hits in 4 innings for the Makos. Robertson struck out 1 and allowed no hits over 3 innings.
Satsuma 15, Vancleave (Miss.) 0
The Gators rolled past Vancleave in the Alabama/Mississippi Challenge on Saturday at Satsuma. Earlier on Saturday, Satsuma beat St. Patrick of Biloxi, Miss., 14-1.
Against Vancleave, Anna Jo Bonds improved to 3-0 with a complete game effort. She struck out 5, walked 1 and allowed 2 hits in 4 innings in the shutout. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
Madison Sawyer was 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Kaeden Enzor was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Presley Willis and Ashleigh Parker had 2 hits each.
In the rout of St. Patrick, Belle Sheffield (6-1) struck out 7 and walked 1 in a complete game. She gave up an earned run on 6 hits in 5 innings. She was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs at the plate.
Sawyer smacked 2 home runs in 4 at-bats with 3 RBIs. Bonds was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Enzor was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Alabama teams won 4 games to 2 for Mississippi squads.
Leroy beat St. Patrick 7-4 and lost 10-0 to D’Iberville. Faith Academy beat D’Iberville 8-4 and lost 10-4 to Vancleave.
SOCCER
Westminster 2, St. Michael 1
Top-ranked Westminster Christian beat No. 2 St. Michael in a rematch of last year’s Class 4A state championship match at the Warrior Invitational at Thompson High School on Thursday. The Wildcats outshot the Cardinals 8-4, getting goals from seventh-grader Alex Menin and sophomore Gabby Dean with an assist from junior Campbell Cox.
Freshman keeper Piper Blazier saved three shots in goal. Blazier stopped two Cardinal penalty kicks in last year’s state title match against St. Michael.
Westminster is 5-1 on the season with its lone loss in their opening match at the Warrior Invitational against 7A host team Thompson 2-1.
The Wildcats also beat Class 6A, No. 8 Fort Payne 2-0 in the event. The Wildcats outshot Fort Payne 21-8.
Westminster got goals from senior AnnaLi Weekley with an assist from Jasmine Feld. Eighth-grader Annie Collier scored with an assist from Menin. Piper Blazier had three saves and eighth-grader Jamiah Maxtion saved five shots.
