Spring sports roundup: St. Paul’s, Foley win Lyon Newell Throws
St. Paul’s boys and Foley’s girls came out as team champions in the Lyon Newell Charity Throws Meet held at UMS-Wright on Wednesday.
St. Paul’s led by individual wins from sophomores Anthony Jones and William Strickland, defeated Fairhope 20-13 to win the boys’ team title, with UMS-Wright third with 9 points and Elberta fourth with 7. B.C. Rain was fifth with 5 points. Jones won the shot put (47 feet, 8½ inches), and was third in the discus (138-10). Strickland won the javelin with a personal-best of 161-0, ahead of UMS-Wright’s Joe Lott (159-2) and Jack Otts (159-0).
“Our sophomore boys really stepped it up,” said St. Paul’s head coach Camille Root Ford. “With Anthony being defending state champion in the shot put, he was really a veteran, but William is really making continuous progress. It’s encouraging to see our sophomores stepping up after losing so many seniors last year.”
Foley edged McGill-Toolen Catholic 16-15 to win the girls’ team title. Vivian Jones led the Lions with a big win in the shot put (35-3) and was third in the discus (112-4). McGill-Toolen had two big individual wins — one coming from Mimi Strain in the javelin (98-3) and the other from freshman Madison Wallace, who won the discus with a personal-best throw of 123-1.
“I felt nervous after fouling on my first two throws and I felt nervous about the wind,” Wallace said. “I was able to get a personal best, and it feels really good.”
St. Paul’s was third with 14 points, while Elberta and Fairhope rounded out the top five with 9 and 5 points, respectively.

Thompson 5, Hoover 1
Thompson used a pair of home runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam, to down Hoover at home on Tuesday in a battle of the top two ranked teams in Class 7A.
No. 1 Thompson (22-2) got a leadoff solo shot from Keara Hall to tie the score 1-all in the home fourth inning and Laney Williams belted a two-out grand slam to provide the winning margin in the sixth.
Hoover (15-3-1) took the early lead when Bella Foran doubled to score Hannah Christian, who singled to start the game.
Reliever Kadyn Bush picked up the win for Thompson, shutting out the Bucs with 3 strikeouts and allowing 3 hits in 4.1 innings.
Olivia Tindell had 2 hits, including a double for the Warriors while Hall added a single and scored twice.
Hoover’s Foran was 3-for-3 with two singles to go along with her 2-run double while Stella Storch was 2-for-3 and Lindsey Westhoven added a double.
Olivia Christian scattered 5 hits and struck out 4 in the circle for Hoover.

Hewitt-Trussville 1, Tuscaloosa County 0 (8 innings)
Dylan Lewkutz pitched an 8-inning shutout, striking out 9 Tuscaloosa County batters on the road on Tuesday.
Jonah Jackson drove in the game-winning run with 2 out in the top of the eighth. Colby Durden scored the winning run after drawing a walk.
Sam Scarborough had a hit and made a catch running toward the center field wall in the bottom of the eighth to save a sure extra-base hit.
Gardendale 4, Mortimer Jordan 3
Kenley Vaughn smacked an RBI double in the sixth inning to help Class 6A No. 10 Gardendale past Mortimer Jordan on Tuesday. Anna Valentine was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the first inning.
Sophie Grant earned the complete-game win, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. She struck out 6 and walked 2.
Homewood 16-20, Woodlawn 0-0
The Patriots blanked Woodlawn in a home Class 6A, Area 9 double-header on Thursday.
Anne Howell got the win for Homewood in Game 1, with 8 strikeouts on the day. She also had a pair of singles to help her cause.
Kloeanne Smith had a triple and a single with 2 RBIs for Homewood. Elise Meacham had a pair of singles with 3 RBIs and Allie Stuman doubled and singled with a pair of RBIs.
In Game 2, Talley Hatcher got the win with 8 strikeouts. Kloeanne Smith had a double and a single with 3 RBIs. Meacham had 3 doubles with an RBI. Lauren Smith had a double and 2 singles with 2 RBIs and Elizabeth Ferguson tripled and drove in a run. Julia Dabney doubled, singled and drove in 3.
In a 13-3 loss at Calera on Monday, Madison Letson had 3 singles for Homewood. Peighton Letson and Mia Gonzalez both singled for the Patriots.

Westminster Christian 14, St. John Paul II 4
The Wildcats won their second straight after an 18-2 win over Lee-Huntsville with the run-rule, 5-inning victory at St. John Paul II. Westminster Christian pounded out 14 hits, led by AP Slayton’s 3-for-4 performance. She also scored 3 runs.
The Wildcats scored 3 runs in the first and 4 in the second to jump ahead of the home team. Westminster scored 2 more in the fourth inning and pushed across 5 runs to end the game in the fifth.
Sloan Holladay was 2-for-4 at the plate with 3 runs scored and an RBI.
Stella Ward earned the win, allowing a run on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts.

North Jackson 10, Pisgah 9
Class 4A No. 9 North Jackson rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the final inning to beat Pisgah on Thursday. The Chiefs trailed 4-1 after 3 innings, 4-3 after 4 before tying the game at 5 in the fifth. Pisgah responded to go up 7-5 in the sixth and 9-5 in the top of the seventh.
Allie Benson went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored for the Chiefs. Allison Ferguson was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and Peyton Malley was 3-for-4 with a double. Kinley Burton, Avery Wynne and Darcy McClendon all had RBIs for North Jackson.
McClendon got the win, giving up 9 runs – 3 earned – on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in 7 innings.
Madeline Flammia and Brinley Chisenall had home runs for Pisgah. Flammia drove in a pair of runs and Chisenall had 3 RBIs. Campbell Barron was 2-for-4 with 2 runs batted in, Emma Sisk was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
On Monday, the Chiefs routed North Sand Mountain 20-0. North Jackson exploded for 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning and pounded out 19 hits in the road win. The top five batters in North Jackson’s lineup had multiple RBIs, led by Benson, who was 3-for-4 with a home run, 5 runs batted in and a run scored.
Ferguson was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Malley was 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Wynne was 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Burton was 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and a pair of RBIs. No. 9 hitter Haley Eldridge was 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored and an RBI.
Malley, Burton and Malloree Grider all had doubles.
McClendon earned the win in the circle, giving up 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2.2 innings. Grider struck out 1 and allowed a hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Kaleigh Roberts, Kendall Williamson, Caybree Dobbins and Cara Holder had hits for North Sand Mountain, with Holder and Roberts getting doubles.
Williamson took the loss, allowing 7 runs – 5 earned – on 7 hits with 2 walks in 3 innings.
Madison Academy 2, Lauderdale County 1
The Class 3A No. 3 Mustangs edged Lauderdale County on Thursday as Cat Schreiber gave up an unearned run on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings. Schreiber was also 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
Evie Stephenson went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Madison Academy (12-2). Mya Western homered in 3 at-bats with an RBI. Breelyn Kilpatrick, Memphis Houston and Madison McCoy were all 1-for-3 in the win.
On Monday, Madison Academy blanked East Limestone 10-0 at home behind Schreiber’s 1-hitter. The sophomore struck out 7 in the 5-inning win. She also went 1-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs.
Stephenson went 2-for-2 for Madison Academy with 2 runs scored, 2 walks and an RBI. Emily Burgreen went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Western was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Kilpatrick was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Houston also had 2 RBIs, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Adair Allen went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Columbia 13, Mae Jemison 1
The Eagles scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, added 3 more in the fourth and exploded for 7 in the sixth to rout Mae Jemison on the road on Tuesday.
Winning pitcher Emma Newby struck out 10 Jaguars while giving up a run on 5 hits over 6 innings. She also went 3-for-3 with a double and 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored for Columbia. Chelby Armstrong went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run and Brooklyn Kelly was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. La’Terrica Wright, Trinity Holloway, Ka’Nijha Arrington and Delia Anes also had RBIs in the win.
Zaria Vaughn had a home run for Mae Jemison.
Brooks 4, Central-Florence 3 (8 innings)
Brayleigh Leone doubled in the winning run with 1 out in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Lions earned the walk-off win over Central-Florence at home on Thursday. Sixth-ranked Class 4A Brooks got a complete game from Abigail Herndon, allowing 3 runs – 1 earned – on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. The left-hander threw 110 pitches – 83 for strikes.
Herndon helped herself at the plate, too, going 1-for-2 with a triple and 2 runs scored. Donna Roberson was 3-for-4 with a run, Mackenzie Fuqua was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Preslie Bunch was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Leone went 1-for-3 with the game-winning double and RBI.
Chloe May was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats. She gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks over 7.1 innings. She also had an RBI in the loss.
Lead-off hitter Kilee Dowdy led Central with 2 hits in 4 at-bats and a pair of runs scored.
On Monday, Brooks rolled past Rogers 17-0 as Eleanor Partrick threw a 3-inning no-hitter. The senior struck out 7 in the win.
Brooks pounded out 17 hits and drew 6 walks in the rout at home.
Fuqua homered and doubled for Brooks, going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Herndon went 2-for-2 with a home run, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Baylee Darby, Leone and Callie McCord all had doubles.
New Hope 12, DAR 2
The Indians got a pair of home runs from Ella Baswell and single homers from Keilei Pearson and Alyssa Stapler in the win over DAR on Thursday. Baswell and Pearson were both 3-for-4 and Stapler drove in 3 runs. Haley Garrison went 2-for-3.
Baswell also earned the win in the circle, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks over 6 innings.

West End 11, Sand Rock 0
Class 2A No. 2 West End ran its record to 11-0 with the shutout of Sand Rock on the road on Thursday as Josie Bunch went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double with 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored. She was intentionally walked twice on the day.
Braylee King picked up the win in the circle and helped her cause with a hit, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Jada Wright went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Emma Finch doubled and had 2 RBIs. Daleighia Wheeler and Kaylee Tarpley also had hits in the win.
On Tuesday, West End got a 5-3 home win over Oneonta. Liddy Falkner was the winning pitcher with King earning a save. King also had a hit, 2 RBIs and scored a run.
Bunch homered and had 2 RBIs in the win for the Patriots. Wright, Wheeler and Bella Falkner also had hits for West End.
Brantley 12, Pike Liberal Arts 3
Alex Grimes struck out 9 in 5 innings as the second-ranked Class 1A Bulldogs beat Pike Liberal Arts at home on Wednesday. Grimes also had 3 hits, including a triple, with 2 RBIs.
Emma Crawley had 3 hits and scored 3 runs for Brantley. Hope Richardson had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.
On Tuesday, Brantley whipped Andalusia 10-1 at home with Anna Parker Little striking out 10 Andalusia batters. Little also had a pair of hits with a double and scored 2 runs for Brantley.
Mary Driggers smacked a 3-run home run for the winners and finished with 4 RBIs. Hope Richardson had 2 hits, including a double, with Grimes adding 2 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. Markay Kilcrease also doubled for the winners.
Piedmont 10, Fort Payne 3
The Class 3A No. 5 Bulldogs whipped 6A Fort Payne on the road on Thursday, jumping to a 3-1 lead after 3 innings before scoring 4 runs in the fifth and 3 more in the sixth.
Carson Young earned the win in the circle, allowing 3 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits in 7 innings.
Cayla Brothers smacked a pair of home runs for Piedmont, going 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Cacey Brothers was 2-for-4 with a 2 RBIs and Young helped her cause by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Olivia Lee took the loss for Fort Payne, allowing 6 earned runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks over 5 innings.
Carley Cash was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cory Kramer was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jocelyn Armstrong was 1-for-2 with a run.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked second in Class 4A, blanked West Point at home on Tuesday. Alena Howse pitched a 6-inning shutout.
Lillie McGuff blasted 2 home runs and a double and finished with 7 RBIs.

Hoover 6, John Carroll 0
Fourth-ranked Class 7A Hoover blanked Class 5A No. 3 John Carroll on Tuesday. Dee Dee Udeh scored twice in the opening half and Brooklyn Gernenz had an assist.
In the second half, Bailee Dowdey scored a pair of goals. Julie Cooke and Addie Bridges also had goals for Hoover. Udeh, Elise Marquardt and Ava Holmes had an assist each.
Calera 3, Gardendale 1
The Eagles knocked off Gardendale to earn the home win on Monday.
Destiny Coates opened the scoring for Calera with a breakaway goal. Reece Collier and Brianna Collier scored the winners’ other goals to give the Eagles a 9-4-3 season record.
Calera will play this weekend in the Southern Coast Cup at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Westminster Christian 7, St. John Paul II 0
Top-ranked Westminster Christian got hat tricks from AnnaLi Weekley and Jasmine Feld in the runaway home Class 4A, Area 8 win on Thursday. The Wildcats outshot the Falcons 33-4 on the night. Westminster Christian’s Piper Blazier saved a shot in the first half and Jamiah Maxtion saved 3 in the second.
Ella Henshaw started the match with a shot over the head of the SJP2 keeper from 30 yards out to give Westminster a 1-0 lead in the second minute off an assist from Alex Menin. Weekley and Feld added goals in the first half to give the winners (7-1) a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Weekley scored 2 more goals in the 69th and 71st minutes of the match. Feld finished the scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute and another in the final minute.
“We just knew we had to go into this game and get off to a good start and not worry about our history with them or what players they had,” Feld said of the win over the Wildcats’ rival. “We just came out and played great the whole time. Everybody played selfless, connected and got better as the game went on. This was definitely a great first area home game.”
The Wildcats will play Huntsville on Saturday in the inaugural Rocket City Spring Shootout at John Hunt Park, followed by an SEC women’s match between the University of Alabama and Tennessee.

Hartselle 7-5, Muscle Shoals 4-1
Top-ranked Hartselle completed a 3-game Class 6A, Area 14 sweep of Muscle Shoals at home on Thursday, giving legendary coach William Booth his 1,200th career win in the nightcap. Booth, the AHSAA’s all-time leader in wins by 290 victories over now-retired William Murrell of Athens Bible, is 1,200-515 at Hartselle – 15-4 this season.
Hartselle jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead and 7-0 after 2 in Game 1. The Tigers got home runs from shortstop Cade Miles and catcher Cam Palahach in the win as Hartselle overcame a pair of errors and was out-hit 7-6 in the game. Palahach had 3 RBIs while Cade Miles was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Landon Blackwood picked up the win, allowing 4 runs – 1 earned – on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Brody Leathers closed out the game, allowing 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2.2 innings.
Cy Hollander took the loss, giving up 7 earned runs on 6 hits in 6 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 4.
Sam Arnold and Cruise Baker had doubles for Muscle Shoals with Baker going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Arnold going 1-for-2 with a run scored. Sam Reed was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Drew Conner was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In Game 2, Hartselle jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first, 4-1 after 2 innings and 5-1 after 3. Cade Miles was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Cole Miles went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
Jo Williamson went 1-for2 with an RBI in the win. Peyton Steele was 1-for-2 with a run and Carter Lee was 1-for-3.
Nic Chumley got the win, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits in 4 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 1. Carson Wilson gave up 3 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks in 2.1 innings and Miles closed out the win with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
Arnold took the loss for Muscle Shoals, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits with a strikeout and 3 walks in 2 innings. Connor allowed a run on 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk in 4 innings of relief.
Dylan Olive doubled and scored a run for the Trojans. Anderson Flippo was 2-for-3 with Arnold, Sam Reed and Carter Berryhill adding hits.
On Tuesday, Hartselle hammered Muscle Shoals 14-0 on the road, out-hitting the Trojans 11-4 with a homer and 3 doubles on the night.
Williamson went 3-for-5 with 6 RBIs and a run scored for Hartselle. Cade Miles went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Palahach was 2-for-5 with a double.
Jace Meadows got the 4-hit shutout, striking out 6 and walking 1.
Arnold went 2-for-3 for Muscle Shoals. Baker and Silas Brewer got the Trojans’ other hits.
Olive took the loss, giving up 7 runs – 5 earned – on 7 hits over 5 innings. He struck out 5 and walked 4.
On Monday, Hartselle beat Athens 3-2 at home. The Golden Eagles scored a pair of runs in the sixth, but could not overcome the home team’s single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.
Hartselle’s Leathers went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and Lawson Williams added another in the win. Steele was 2-for-3, Cade Miles was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Williamson drove in a run and Keaton Lance was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Chumley earned the win, giving up 2 unearned runs on 5 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Leathers closed out the win, allowing a hit with a strikeout and a walk.
Grayson Hays took the loss for Athens, allowing 3 runs – 2 earned – on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks in 6 innings.
Caiden Dumas was 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles, Carson Winter doubled in 2 at-bats and Jack Elliott drove in a run. Athens also got hits from Luke Vaughn, Walker Fleming and Austin Uptain.
Sparkman 10, James Clemens 7
The 10th-ranked Senators knocked off James Clemens in a Class 7A matchup on Monday at Toyota Field in Madison. Sparkman scored 4 runs in the third inning to jump to a 5-1 edge before both teams scored 3 in the fifth. James Clemens scored 3 in the sixth after the Senators scored 2 in the top of the inning.
The Jets out-hit Sparkman 10-8, but committed 3 errors to 2 for the Senators.
Miguel Lang was 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs and a run scored in the win. Amaree Jabbar went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Sparkman and Will Peccia was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Winning pitcher Ryan Everly went 5 innings to earn the win, allowing 3 earned runs. He was also 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs at the plate. RJ Freiholtz gave up 2 hits in a shutout inning to close the game.
Cade McComb took the loss for James Clemens, giving up 5 runs – 4 earned – on 2 hits with a strikeout and 4 walks. Four Jets pitchers walked 11 batters in the loss.
Ty Marsh was 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored for the Jets. Jesse Isensee was 3-for-3 with a double, Francisco Ramirez was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Satchel Wheeler drove in a pair of runs.
Westminster Christian 7-12, St. John Paul II 3-0
The Wildcats completed their 3-game Class 4A, Area 13 sweep of St. John Paul II on Thursday, winning both games at home after an 11-1 win on the road on Tuesday.
In Thursday’s Game 1, Class 4A No. 8 Westminster broke open a 5-3 game with back-to-back home runs by Jackson Lange and Lawson Collier headed into the seventh inning. Sean Lapinskes put the Falcons down in order to end the game. He was also 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and 3 runs scored.
Starter Joshua Goode went 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts. He was 2-for-2 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
In Game 2, the Wildcats sent 11 men to the plate and scored 7 runs in the fourth inning on the way to the run-rule 5-inning win. Collier went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double with 4 RBIs for Westminster. In the 3-game series, Collier had 6 hits in 11 at-bats (.545) with 8 RBIs and 3 homers. Amos Baldwin was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and 2 runs.
Starter Riley Friend pitched all 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5.
In Tuesday’s 11-1 win, Westminster Christian wrapped up the 5-inning run-rule win at St. John Paul II. Lange gave up a run on 1 hit with 4 strikeouts in his complete-game effort.
Lapinskes slapped a 3-run home run over the left-field fence to put the visitors up in the first inning, followed by Goode singling, stealing second, taking third on a fielder’s choice and scoring on a passed ball.
Westminster scored another run in the second inning and got a 3-run homer from Collier in the fourth. The Wildcats added 3 more in the top of the fifth before Lange retired the home team on three straight ground balls in the bottom of the inning.

Madison County 21-15, Lee-Huntsville 8-0
The Tigers rolled past Lee in a road double-header on Tuesday. Lee committed 7 errors and gave up 14 unearned runs in the 21-8 loss in the opener. The Generals made 5 errors in the 15-0 Game 2 loss and allowed 8 unearned runs.
In Game 1, Braden Reed went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, 3 runs scored and an RBI for Madison County. Memphis Scott was 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jace Duckett went 2-for-6 with a double, 2 RBIs and 4 runs. Connor Drake was 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs for the Tigers.
Madison County swiped 13 bases with Jake Thornton, Reed, Drake and Jace Duckett stealing 2 bases each.
Cole Mullins earned the win, allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 innings. Keigan McClure struck out 2 and Drake fanned 5 in relief stints.
Jamie Tatum took the loss for Lee, allowing 14 runs – 6 earned – on 9 hits in 4 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 4. Tatum also had a triple and drove in 3 runs for the Generals.
Dustin Zebrook was 1-for-2 with 3 runs scored, Ethan Towry and Aiden Kohler also drove in a run in the loss.
In Game 2, Madison County exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning to trigger the 10-run rule win. Riley Tipton drove in 3 runs and Thornton drove in 2 and had a double. Scott was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and a run scored. Kenneth Spratt was 1-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI.
Tipton struck out 8 and allowed 1 hit in a 4-inning shutout. He did not walk a batter.

Zebrook took the loss, allowing 10 runs – 7 earned – on 7 hits in 3.1 innings. He struck out 1 and walked 5.
Buckhorn 5, Madison County 3
The Bucks got 8 hits – 4 extra-base knocks – in the road victory at Madison County on Thursday. Buckhorn improved to 9-8 on the season and dropped the Tigers to 15-4. The Bucks got all the runs they would need by scoring a pair of runs in the second and third innings and got another in the top of the fourth as Madison County got single runs in the first, second and fifth innings.
No. 9 hitter Brody Edwards went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored a run for Buckhorn. Xavier Burress, Jack Rupe and Zachary Bradford all doubled in the win.
Kyler Campbell earned the win, allowing 3 runs – 2 earned – on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and 5 walks in 6 innings. Peyton Joiner closed it out, striking out 2 of the 3 hitters he faced in the final inning.
Memphis Scott and Braden Reed had Madison County’s hits. Jace Duckett was 0-for-3 with an RBI. The Tigers left 7 runners on base while Buckhorn stranded 6.
Starter Jake Thornton took the loss, giving up 4 earned runs on 4 hits in 2 innings with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Duckett allowed an earned run on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk in 5 innings of relief.
Athens Bible 13, Valley Head 2
The Trojans earned the Class 1A, Area 15 win in at rout at Valley Head on Thursday.
Luke Murrell had 4 hits, including a triple, with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored for Athens Bible. Ethan Johnson had a triple with 3 RBIs and scored a run. Grant Ogles had 3 hits with 4 RBIs and Ryan Faust added 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.
Johnson picked up the win, striking out 11 while allowing 2 unearned runs on 4 hits over 5 innings.
On Tuesday, Athens Bible beat Valley Head 11-1 as Murrell got the home win, allowing no runs on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and a walk over 3 innings. Weston Todd struck out 4 and allowed a run on 2 hits in relief.
Murrell helped his cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases for the Trojans. Johnson went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. He stole a pair of bases. Todd was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Ethan Barnes was 2-for-3 with a double and Gavin Butler went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
BIRMINGHAM
Pleasant Grove 14, Fairfield 6
The Spartans picked up the Class 5A, Area 9 win on the road on Tuesday. Dayton Parks and Timothy Blue homered for Pleasant Grove, which out-hit Fairfield 12-6 in a game marred by 5 errors by each club. Parks was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Blue went 1-for-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs.
Elijah Hill was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs in the win. Kaleb Freeman was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBIs. Amaury Webster and Mykel Toole were both 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs with Toole scoring twice. Andre Watts went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Blue earned the win in relief for Pleasant Grove. He pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Freeman pitched the first 2.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Cedarian Clemon took the loss for Fairfield, allowing 9 runs – 2 earned – on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 7 walks over 2.1 innings. He went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Eric Watkins, Corve’ Taylor, Dewayne Fox, Jalen Kidd and Jarvis Price also had hits for the Tigers.
Gardendale 1, Boaz 0
Caiden Combs struck out 8 and allowed 4 hits in a 7-inning shutout of Boaz for Class 6A No. 6 Gardendale on Thursday. Combs helped his cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate and driving in the lone run.
Cody Florence went 1-for-2 with a double for the Rockets.
On Monday, Gardendale rolled past Mortimer Jordan 18-0 at home as Cooper Jarvis hit for the cycle. Jarvis finished with 5 RBIs and scored 3 runs.
Gardendale exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the second in the 5-inning game. The Rockets had 14 hits to 1 for Mortimer Jordan. The Blue Devils committed 4 errors in the loss.
Logan Fitzgerald earned the win for Gardendale, allowing a hit and striking out 2 in 3 innings.
Braylon Disko was 1-for-2 for Mortimer Jordan. Jeremiah Tingle took the loss.
Mortimer Jordan 6, Gardendale 5
Isaiah Brown drove in a pair of runs as Mortimer Jordan slipped past Gardendale at home on Tuesday. Braylon Disko went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
Garrett Ames picked up the win for the Blue Devils and had a double at the plate.
Ciaden Combs homered for Gardendale and had 3 RBIs.
Vestavia Hills 2, Spain Park 1
Vestavia Hills scored 2 sixth-inning runs behind outstanding pitching to earn the win in a matchup of Class 7A top 10 teams.
The eighth-ranked Rebels (9-7) got a run-scoring double from James Lucas and pinch-hitter Will Bourland lined out to left field, scoring Leyton Downey, who had replaced Lucas as a pinch-runner.
Chase Rafferty threw a complete-game 1-hitter for the Rebels, striking out 5 and walking 4. Rafferty threw 104 pitches with 63 strikes.
Lucas was 2-for-2 with a walk.
No. 9 Spain Park (13-6) scored its lone run when Coleman Gray’s ground-out scored Rhys Jones, who singled to start the fourth inning.
Spain Park starter CJ Gross allowed a hit with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 innings while reliever Jackson Bradley surrendered both runs on 2 hits.

Calera 7, Chilton County 2
Will Harrison threw a 2-hit complete game to lead Calera past Chilton County in a Class 6A, Area 5 game at home on Tuesday. Harrison struck out 6 and gave up 1 earned run in the win.
Dalton Ash went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles. Aspen Long was 1-for-1 with a double and 3 RBIs. He was hit by a pitch twice. DeCarl White went 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

BIRMINGHAM
Chelsea 5, Hewitt-Trussville 0
The third-ranked Class 7A Hornets blanked Hewitt-Trussville as Javi Rivera-Miranda registered a hat trick.
Max Wever scored a goal and had an assist for Chelsea. Luke Harper also scored a goal in the home win. Harper Jones had a pair of assists.
Keeper Brock Marlow made 5 saves on the way to the shutout.
John Carroll 2, Hoover 1
Class 5A No. 3 John Carroll topped 7A Hoover at home on Tuesday, scoring a goal in each half.
Henry Patterson scored Hoover’s goal in the second half on an assist from Hudson Croker.
Vestavia Hills 1, Thompson 0 (OT)
The sixth-ranked Class 7A Rebels slipped past Area 5 foe Thompson on the road on Tuesday.
Reid Laughlin scored in overtime off a corner kick by Jackson Tarorick.
