Spring sports roundup: Oak Mountain boys soccer rolls to 35th straight win
The top-ranked Class 7A Oak Mountain boys soccer team continued its defensive dominance on Friday in a 4-0 whipping of Class 7A, Area 6 rival Vestavia Hills in a home match.
The defending state champion Eagles are 16-0 and have allowed 7 goals all season, no more than 1 in any game. Coach David DiPiazza’s squad has scored 73 goals overall and have an 11-1 scoring edge in its 2-0 start in area play.
Oak Mountain is riding a 35-game win streak after finishing 29-0-1 last season with a 1-1 tie against Oconee County of Watkinsville, Ga., on March 7, 2024. The Eagles have not lost since a 1-0 setback to Huntsville in the state playoff semifinals on May 11, 2023.
Oak Mountain will travel to No. 2 Hoover (12-0-1) on Tuesday for another area showdown.
Sam Collins and Gabe Capocci scored 2 goals apiece – both had 3 shots on goal – in the win over the Rebels. Nate Taylor had a pair of assists and Luke Jovanovich and Nathan Wright had 1 each.
The Oak Mountain defense did not allow a shot on goal by Vestavia (3-6-1) against junior keeper Alexander Chaidez. The Rebels had 3 shots, two by Peyton James and one by James Junkin. The Eagles took 16 shots on goal in the win. Center back Adrian Gutierrez led the Oak Mountain defense.

Homewood 11, Decatur 1
The Patriots improved to 14-3 on the season with the run-rule home win over Decatur in 6 innings on Friday.
Homewood’s Jack Ross ran his record to 5-0 on the mound, allowing no earned runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks over 4 innings. Ross helped his cause with a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.
Cooper Sain pitched 2 shutout innings of relief, allowing 1 hit. He was also 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Ben Roberts had a pair of doubles and drove in 2 runs. Thomas Davis had 2 hits and 2 stolen bases. Levi Nickoli had a hit, 2 walks and was hit by a pitch with 3 runs scored.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
James Clemens 7, Lexington (Tenn.) 0
The Jets improved to 11-5 overall with a pair of wins on Friday in the Crossroads Spring Break Classic at Corinth (Miss.) High School.
In the shutout win over Lexington, Tenn., Tyler Lewis pitched a 3-hit complete game with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks for Bob Jones. The junior left-hander faced 24 batters in the 7-inning contest.
Trip Morgan doubled in 2 at-bats with an RBI for the Jets. Leadoff hitter Matthew Drinkwater went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Jessee Isensee was 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, Devier Ramos was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Bryson Hodge also had an RBI. Hayden Udovich, Will Congo and Jan Ramirez also had hits in the win.
The Jets jumped out front with 3 runs in the top of the first inning, scored another run in the third and 3 more in the fifth. James Clemens committed 2 errors and the Tigers had 1.
In a 6-3 win over Corinth, the Jets scored 3 runs in the top of the second and 3 more in the third inning. The Warriors scored 3 runs in the bottom of the third. Corinth committed 3 errors while James Clemens had 2.
Drinkwater pitched a 7-inning complete game, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits with 9 strikeouts. He allowed a 3-run home run to Griffin Enis.
Hodge went 1-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs for James Clemens. Brooks Rhodes also drove in a run in the win. Udovich was 1-for-2 with a run scored, Hudson Smith was 2-for-3 and Morgan was 1-for-4.
The Jets beat North Pontotoc of Ecru, Miss., on Thursday in the event and have won seven straight.
Athens Bible 12-13, Wheeler (Miss.) 2-6
The Trojans swept a home double-header over Wheeler of Booneville, Miss., on Friday to push their record to 9-2 on the season.
Luke Murrell earned the win on the mound for Athens Bible, giving up a run on 1 hit with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 innings. He helped his cause with 3 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
Jonathan Barnes pitched 2 innings, allowing 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Barnes also drove in a run and scored a run.
Chandler James had a single and a double with 2 RBIs and a stolen base. Gavin Bulter and Ethan Barnes also had a single and an RBI each. Luke McElyea had an RBI.
In Game 2, McElyea got the win, allowing an unearned run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in 2.1 innings. Ryan Faust worked 2.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk. He also had an RBI. Colin Rolofson gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings with a walk.
James tripled and doubled with 4 RBIs and Barnes had 2 RBIs on 3 singles. Murrell finished with a double and a single with 2 runs scored. Sam Hall had 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a stolen base. Colton Hayes singled and stole a base. Grayson Nayman also had an RBI in the win.
Athens Bible will host Meek on Monday.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Thomasville 6, Satsuma 5
The Tigers rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past visiting Satsuma on Friday. It was the second straight final at-bat loss for the Gators and the fifth consecutive win for Thomasville.
Thomasville trailed 5-3 when Diego Bryant knocked Hunter Sullivan’s 62nd pitch of the night down the right-field line to score Anthony Dotson and BJ Cheeseboro. Bryant avoided the tag sliding into third for a triple and two pitches later scored on a Dallas Bryant single up the middle.
Cheeseboro and Dotson – who had 2 hits apiece – scored on an error on a Dallas Bryant grounder in the first inning.
Isaac Parten got the win for Thomasville, pitching the final 2 innings with a hit – a sixth-inning triple by Braxton Byrd – and 2 strikeouts.
Satsuma’s Micah Sullivan drove in Jake May as part of a 5-run third inning when 11 batters took to the plate. Sullivan has 16 RBIs on the season to lead the Gators.

Hoover 2, Hewitt-Trussville 1
The Bucs, ranked second in Class 7A, beat No. 9 Hewitt-Trussville in an Area 6 contest on the road on Friday.
Hoover (12-0-1) trailed for the first time all season, but Edwin Aroke tied the game and Benjamin Bruns scored the game-winner on a penalty kick with 18 minutes remaining.
The Bucs will host 16-0 No. 1 Oak Mountain on Tuesday in another area game.

Vestavia Hills 1, Oak Mountain 0
Third-ranked Vestavia Hills edged No. 1 Oak Mountain on the road on Friday to improve to 10-1-2 overall and 2-0 in Class 7A, Area 6. The Rebels handed the Eagles their first loss of the season, dropping them to 12-1-2.
Vestavia Hills has outscored its opponents 52-7 overall and 4-0 in area play while Oak Mountain has scored 55 goals on the year while allowing 5.
Vestavia Hills keeper Brianna Tortorici had 5 saves on 4 shots on goal in the first half and another in the second. Oak Mountain goalkeeper Madeleine Reilly had 2 saves.
Betsy Whitson snapped the stalemate in the 18th minute of the second half off a free kick.
Both teams will be back in Area 6 play on Tuesday with Vestavia Hills hosting No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville (6-2-1) at 6:30 p.m. and Oak Mountain, 0-1 in the area, at No. 4 Hoover at 5 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Hoover 15, Bob Jones 0
Hoover rolled past Bob Jones in the second game of the Buccaneer Round Robin on Friday at the Hoover Met Complex after opening Friday play with an 8-5 win over Athens.
Reagan Lawson ripped an inside-the-park grand slam in the fourth inning in the rout of the Patriots.
Hoover pushed across 6 runs in the bottom of the third – including one on a walk to Lawson. Hailey Nichols drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, 2 runs came in on a Bob Jones error and Caroline Chaney brought in a pair of runs on a single. The Bucs’ big inning pushed the lead to 7-0 following Lindsey Westhoven’s RBI ground out in the first.
Lawson’s homer brought in 4 of the 7 runs scored in the fourth. The Bucs scored a run on a passed ball and Avi Davis singled in 2 more before the grand slam.
Chaney got the win for Hoover, allowing 2 hits over 4 innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks.
Alexis Hamilton took the loss for the Patriots, allowing all 15 runs – 10 earned – on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and 10 walks in 3.1 innings.
Ryleigh Heddy and Bella Giesbreicht had hits for Bob Jones.
Avery Chaney went 3-for-4 with a 2-RBI double in the top of the second inning in the win over Athens.
The Bucs opened with a 3-0 lead in the first inning, all coming on an Athens error. Chaney pushed the lead to 5-0 in the second and Mollie Hanson’s walk pushed across another. Cheyenne Conner and Reagan Lawson had multiple hits in the win.
Haley Westhoven got the win for Hoover, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings. She struck out 4 and walked 2.
Abby Lopez took the loss for the Golden Eagles, allowing 8 runs – 4 earned – on 11 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout.
Shortstop Lily Lowery went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
Central-Phenix City 6, Silverdale Baptist 1
Central-Phenix City wrapped up a 3-0 Friday performance in Hoover’s Buccaneer Round Robin with the win over Silverdale Baptist Academy of Chattanooga.
Savannah Sevier drove in the first of her 2 RBIs on the day with a single in the first and leadoff hitter Gerritt Griggs’ single in the second also brought in a run. Griggs was 3-for-4 on the day.
Winning pitcher Ally Supan helped her cause with a solo home run to left in the top of the third for the Red Devils. She gave up a run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and no walks over 7 innings.
Braylee Raby hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fifth for the Seahawks.
Bita Cox took the loss for Silverdale, allowing 6 runs on 10 hits with 6 strikeouts with a walk.
Also on Friday, the Red Devils whipped Pell City 11-1, pounding out 10 hits with Supan giving up the run on 2 hits over 5 innings. She struck out 2 and walked a batter.
Mariah Harrison drove in 3 first-inning runs with a single and Kam Hammock brought in another with a double. In the third, Lexi Kirk drove in a run with a double, Ari Shorter and Griggs singled in a run each and Khloe Broadwater had an RBI double. Supan also drove in a run with a ground out.
Starter Addy Simmons took the loss for Pell City, allowing 9 runs – 7 earned – on 6 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks.
Briley Goodgame and Simmons had a hit apiece and Simmons had an RBI for the Panthers.
In Friday’s opening game, Central took advantage of a 9-run fourth inning on the way to a 13-6 win over Cullman. In the decisive fourth, Supan drove in 2 runs with a triple, Hammock doubled in 2 runs, Griggs singled in 2 more and Madison Wagner got an RBI on a hit by pitch and Ari Shorter brought another in with a walk.
In the first inning Supan drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Harrison hit a 2-run home run.
Cullman took the lead in the bottom of the first when Samantha Johnson singled in a run, Dracen Bates doubled in 2 and Allie Johnson singled in another. Hattie Graham hit a 2-run homer to center field in the second.
Kayla Storey pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with 2 strikeouts and no walks to earn the win in the circle in relief of Neveah Howard, who allowed 6 runs – 4 earned – on 4 hits in 1.1 innings. She struck out 1 and walked 2.
Reliever Kynlei Storey took the loss for Cullman, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks.
