St. Paul’s 3-7, Faith Academy 2-6
St. Paul’s used timely hitting and strategic pitching in a crucial Class 5A, Area 2 doubleheader against Faith Academy at Bussie Greer Field on Friday night.
The wins enabled the Saints, 13-8 overall and 6-1 in area play, to take two of three games in the series, and avenged a 9-6 loss to the Rams (18-5, 6-2) on Thursday night.
“It’s a brutal area,” said St. Paul’s head coach Andy Robbins. “You’ve got us, Mobile Christian, and Citronelle in the same area, and that’s a brutal area. You’ve got to fight your tail off, and that’s what I told the kids. I’m really proud of them.”
“It was a tough battle between two really good teams,” said Faith head coach Matt Seymour. “We had many opportunities to right some wrongs. We’ll bounce back from it; we’ll be okay, but we had opportunities to win those games.”
Bradley Irish was the winning pitcher in the Saints’ win in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, pitching a complete game while giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one.
Brooks McDonald had an RBI, Taylor O’Dell was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while Hudson Farnell scored a run.
Grayson Finch took the loss for Faith Academy, going 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Brodie Wilson had an RBI, Eli Quinley was 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Cooper Smith scored a run.
John Stowers scored on McDonald’s grounder for a 1-0 St. Paul’s lead in the first inning, but Wilson’s RBI single in the top of the second tied the game. The Saints answered with two more runs in their half of the inning when O’Dell doubled in Farnell and later scored on an error after an Irish bunt.
Faith made it 3-2 in the top of the fourth when Smith scored on a fielder’s error, and had a chance to at least tie the game in the fifth when it had runners in scoring position with two outs, but Irish induced Brayden Wright to fly out.
In Game 2, St. Paul’s used a three-pitcher rotation, with O’Dell getting the win after relieving starter Bay Lane in the top of the third. O’Dell pitched 2.2 innings, allowed one run on four hits, struck out four and walked two in the win. Stowers, who played catcher Thursday and Friday, got the save, allowing only one run and three hits in a single inning.
“He’s a warrior,” Robbins said of Stowers. “He does this all the time, pitch and catch and does what it takes to win.”
Edward McLeod hit his second homer in as many nights — a solo shot in the first, and finished the night 1-for-3 along with an intentional walk. McDonald had a double and a two-run sacrifice fly, while Caleb Roland and Irish each scored a run.
Christian Freeman took the loss for Faith Academy in relief, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on two hits while striking out four and walking two. Bryce Turner was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Quinley had a sac fly RBI, and Ortiz was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Rams hitting attack.
Faith led 4-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Saints went up 7-4 in their half of the inning when a run scored on a bases-loaded walk, two runs scored off passed balls and two more came on McDonald’s sacrifice fly. The Rams came back with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but failed to take advantage of runners on base and came up short.
“We hit some guys and walked some guys when we didn’t need to, and when you have two good teams playing like this, you can’t give up anything,” Seymour said.
“You never have enough runs, and we talked about how you got to start strong and keep pressing every inning, especially in two big area games,” said Robbins. “I thought our guys put the ball in play well and ran the bases very well.”
