Spring sports roundup: Hoover rallies past Hazel Green

Hoover’s softball squad rallied in the fifth inning to beat Hazel Green 6-3 at home on Wednesday. The Bucs pushed across 4 runs in the inning to overcome a 3-2 Hazel Green lead.

Hannah Christian, who had a pair of hits on the night, tripled in a run in the fifth for the Bucs. MC Detwiler also had 2 hits and an RBI on the night.

Olivia Christian picked up the win in relief of Haley Westhoven. Christian allowed 1 hit over 3 innings. Westhoven gave up 5 hits and notched 4 strikeouts.

On Tuesday, the Bucs beat Hewitt-Trussville 5-2 with another come-from-behind win.

Hewitt-Trussville scored first in the top of the second inning on a squeeze play before Hoover tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Lindsey Westhoven.

Hoover made it 5-1 in the third inning after Bella Foran singled and scored, Olivia Christian drove in a pair of runs and Ava Hartman doubled in another run.

Kaitlyn Raines picked up the win for the Bucs, allowing 5 hits and a run over 4 innings of relief.

Olivia Christian, Hartman, Foran, Westhoven and Hannah Christian had hits in the win.

Zaylen Tucker took the loss for the Huskies.

Hewitt-Trussville finished with 7 hits and committed 2 errors on the night.

Satsuma 7, Saraland 4

The Gators blasted 3 home runs in the win on the road over Saraland on Thursday to improve to 10-1-1 on the season. Anna Bonds, Madison Sawyer and Presley Willis all had home runs in the win.

Kaeden Enzor had a pair of hits and an RBI in the win.

Sawyer improved her record to 3-0, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs over 7 innings. She struck out 2 and walked 2.

Bre Hughes and Myleigh Dobbins had home runs for Saraland. Dobbins was saddled with the loss for the Spartans. She gave up 5 runs – 4 earned – on 6 hits over 5 innings. She struck out 5 and walked 2.

On Tuesday, Satsuma topped Baldwin County 3-2 in 8 innings. Belle Sheffield picked up the win in relief of Anna Bonds. Sheffield (5-1) allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits in 3 innings. She struck out 5 and did not walk a batter. Bonds went 5 innings, with no runs on 1 hit. She struck out 6 and did not walk a batter.

Bonds also had a pair of RBIs and Ella Howell drove in a run for the Gators. Ashia Martinez scored a pair of runs for Satsuma.

Brooke McGowin had a solo home run for Baldwin County to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Madylin Byrd, a Florida Atlantic commitment, struck out 22 batters in the loss for Baldwin County. She allowed 2 runs – both unearned – on 6 hits. She did not walk a batter over 8 innings.

Satsuma will host the Alabama-Mississippi Challenge this weekend.

Brantley 11, Luverne 0

The Bulldogs blanked Luverne in a home game on Thursday to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Anna Parker Little pitched a 1-hitter with 4 strikeouts in the shutout. She also had a pair of hits and scored 3 runs for Brantley.

Alex Grimes had 2 hits and a pair of RBIs and scored twice. Hope Richardson had 2 hits with 3 RBIs.

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 10, Tuscaloosa County 0

The fifth-ranked Class 7A Bucs earned their second straight shutout with the win over Tuscaloosa County on Tuesday.

Dee Dee Udeh scored 3 goals for Hoover, 9-1-1 overall and 1-0 in area play.

The Bucs also got goals from Casey Knerr, Addie Bridges, Abby Leader, Sage Thomas, Ava Holmes and Bailey Gouyton.

On Monday, Hoover blanked Class 6A No. 5 Northridge 4-0, scoring all 4 goals in the opening half.

Udeh opened the scoring with a penalty kick. Bailee Dowdey, Elise Marquardt and Bridges also had goals for Hoover.

Northridge drops to 4-3 on the year.

St. James 7, Tallassee 0

The Class 1A/3A eighth-ranked St. James squad opened its season with the home rout of Tallassee on Tuesday.

Senior Katie Brightwell scored 5 goals to lead the Trojans. Senior Mary Grace Hixon also scored a goal along with seventh-grader Elsa Seeman, who was playing in her first varsity game.

Hope McCain finished with a pair of assists in the win. Other assists came from Hailey Vance, Hixon, Elliette Barton and Molly Phillips. It was also the first varsity competition for Barton and Phillips.

Prattville Christian 3, Chilton County 0

Kendall Jordan picked up a shutout in goal for Prattville Christian (1-2) in the win over Chilton County.

Avery Rogers scored 2 goals for the Panthers and Bella Carothers added 1.

BASEBALL

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Madison County 13-10, Randolph 3-0

Madison County completed a three-game Class 4A, Area 13 sweep with the double-header wins at Randolph on Thursday.

The Tigers led 8-1 after three innings in Thursday’s opener. Madison County banged out 11 hits and took advantage of 3 Randolph errors. Nicholas Sharp and Nickolas Broadbent doubled in the win. Both were 2-for-4 with Broadbent scoring twice and Sharp scoring once with an RBI. Jace Duckett was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Jake Thornton drove in a run.

Duckett pitched 5.2 innings to pick up the win. He allowed 2 runs – 1 earned – on 4 hits while striking out 14 and walking 1.

Ryan Martin took the loss for Randolph, allowing 8 runs – 6 earned – on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and 5 walks over 2 innings. Jackson Weglage struck out 5 in 3 innings of relief. He did not allow a hit, but surrendered 2 earned runs.

Thomas Vonahlefeld, Dane Miller, Michael Vega, Andrew Smith and Zack McFall had hits for the Raiders.

In Game 2, Sharp struck out 8 Randolph batters to pick up the win in 2.2 innings pitched. He gave up 2 hits and walked 1.

Jack Reeves took the loss for Randolph, allowing 5 earned runs in 2 innings. He walked 4 and did not strike out any hitters.

William Bibb went 2-for-5 for the winners with a double and a pair of RBIs. Broadbent drove in 3 runs for Madison County.

On Tuesday, Madison County blanked Randolph 10-0 at home in the first game of the three-game series. Thornton struck out 14 and the Tigers banged out 5 extra-base hits on the way to the shutout. Thornton allowed 4 hits, did not walk a batter and delivered 62 strikes on 83 pitches on the way to the win.

Thornton also hit a home run and a double and drove in 5 runs on his 3-for-3 day at the plate.

Braden Reed, Brody Moon and Duckett also had doubles for Madison County. Duckett was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, Reed was 2-for-3 and Moon had 2 RBIs.

Weglage tripled in 2 at-bats for Randolph. Vonahlefeld went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Freshman Keaton Schroer took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 3.

East Limestone 18, Lee-Huntsville 0

The Indians rolled over Lee-Huntsville on Monday in a road game.

East Limestone got 4 RBIs from Bay Scott and Noah Workman pounded out 3 hits. Cade Parham struck out 6 batters in 3 innings. Cole Vining also struck out the side in his 1 inning on the mound.

New Brockton 11, Straughn 6

Three days after Trent Smith struck out 18 Zion Chapel batters in a 1-0 win, Payton Green fanned 7 as New Brockton beat Straughn on the road on Monday. Smith had a 2-hitter in his gem on Friday while Green gave up 5 hits and walked a batter.

The Gamecocks scored a pair of runs in the top of the third before Straughn answered with 4 in the bottom of the fourth. New Brockton scored 3 in the fifth and sixth to lead 8-4 before the home team pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Gamecocks padded the lead with 3 more runs in the seventh.

Dawson Peacock smacked a home run and doubled for New Brockton. He was 2-for-5 and had 3 RBIs in the win. Joshua Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with a home run, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Green was also 3-for-5 with a double.

Layne Grantham had a home run in 2 at-bats with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs for Straughn. Saxby Radford had 2 RBIs with a double in 4 at-bats. Kaden Wiggins also scored 2 runs in the loss. Clark Gay also had a double.

Ryan Cobb and Matthew Ashberry combined to allow 11 hits for the Tigers. Cobb pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 8 runs – 6 earned – on 9 hits with 3 walks. He struck out 11 Gamecocks. Ashberry allowed 3 earned runs on 2 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks.

On Tuesday, New Brockton whipped Elba 18-8 as the Gamecocks pounded out five doubles and three pitchers held Elba to 3 earned runs.

Smith, Gutierrez, Hayden Pope, Green and Riley Simmons all doubled for New Brockton. Green, Smith and Simmons all had 2 RBIs.

Jacob Fisher picked up the win, allowing 4 runs – none earned – on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and a walk. Dalton Holloway and Hunter Bedsole finished out the game on the mound, with Holloway walking 2 and striking out 1 in one-third of an inning. Bedsole gave up 4 runs – 3 earned – with 3 strikeouts and a walk.

Elba’s Brayden Johnson gave up 13 runs – 8 earned – on 6 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout over 1.1 innings.

Colin Arnold and Ty Sieving drove in a pair of runs apiece, with Sieving going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Montgomery Academy 9, JAG 1

John Allen Jones went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs to help boost Montgomery Academy past JAG at home on Thursday.

Rick McBride and Luke Jones also had 2 hits apiece while Parker Cook had a hit with 3 RBIs. McBride had an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Camp Shanahan had an RBI single for the Eagles.

McBride also earned the win on the mound for Montgomery Academy (3-2), pitching 4 shutout innings. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 8. Cook pitched 2 innings in relief, allowing a run on a hit with 5 strikeouts. Andrew Hosein finished the game, striking out 2 in a hitless seventh inning.

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 1, Florence 0

The Bucs scored early in the second half to edge Florence on the road on Thursday.

Junior Conrad Hernandez scored the game-winner for Hoover.

On Tuesday, Hoover blanked Tuscaloosa County 7-0. The Bucs got a pair of goals from Chirag Dangol in the first half and coasted to the Class 7A, Area 5 win.

After halftime, Elijah Kim scored a pair of goals while Conrad Hernandez, Henry Patterson and James Walker also had goals.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 4, Enterprise 2

Brewer Welch recorded a hat trick in Montgomery Academy’s home win on Tuesday, pushing his season total to 9 goals in four matches.

The junior midfielder got the Eagles on the board first with a goal assisted by Win Berry. Welch got Montgomery Academy’s second goal on a free kick while Berry scored the third goal. Welch closed out the scoring on an assist from Reeves Hall.

Chilton County 4, Prattville Christian 3

Cade Segars scored all 3 of Prattville Christian’s goals in the loss to Chilton County on Thursday. The Panthers dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Brady Roberson and Wade Pratt picked up assists in the match.
