Spring sports roundup: Bob Jones tops James Clemens for Area 8 title

Bob Jones wrapped up the Class 7A, Area 8 baseball title with a doubleheader sweep of Madison rival James Clemens on the road on Saturday. The Patriots won the first game 6-1 and rallying for a 4-3 triumph to take first place. Bob Jones, ranked second in the state and riding a 10-game winning streak, is 35-6 on the season and finished the area slate at 7-0.

Bob Jones will host Area 7 runner-up Sparkman (27-9) for a doubleheader in the opening round of the 7A playoffs on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. Game 2 will be at 7:30 and if a third game is necessary, it will be Saturday at 2 p.m.

James Clemens (27-11) will play at Area 7 champion Grissom (22-13) on Friday to open the playoffs with a doubleheader at 4:30 and 7 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.

In Saturday’s Game 1, Tanner Hermesch earned the win, allowing an unearned run on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in 7 innings. He threw 72 strikes in 104 pitches – 69 percent.

Braden Booth and Zack Johnson had doubles for Bob Jones, with Booth going 2-for-4 with a run scored and Johnson 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gresham Baker was 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs, Dillon Adkins was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Reece Cato was 1-for-1 with an RBI, Robert Chatmon was 1-for-3 and Vincent Howald was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Satchel Wheeler took the loss for James Clemens. He gave up 3 earned runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and 5 walks in 2.2 innings. Luke Davenport gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks in 4.1 innings of relief.

Hayden Markfort went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Jets. Carson Loosier, Benjamin Graves, Matthew Drinkwater and David Sharp also had singles in the loss.

In Game 2, Bob Jones took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but fell behind 3-2 after four innings before rallying for the win with a pair of runs with two out in the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, Patriots pinch-hitter Chatmon was hit by a pitch to open the inning and pinch-runner Tiger Flanigan took second on Myles Hammonds’ sacrifice bunt. Following Jacob Pearl’s fly out to left field, Booth walked and he and Flanigan scored on Baker’s single.

Bob Jones finished with 4 hits while the Jets had 3. Bob Jones had to overcome 3 errors to get the win.

Baker went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs for Bob Jones. Adkins doubled in 3-at bats and notched a pair of RBIs. Pearl got the Patriots’ other hit.

Gage Wilson earned the win in relief of Jack Shaw. Wilson pitched the final 2 innings of hitless and scoreless baseball with a walk. Shaw allowed 3 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk in 5 innings.

Mason Busch was saddled with the loss, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 3 innings. Starter Cade McComb also gave up 2 earned runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks over 4 innings.

Drinkwater, Wheeler and Hudson Smith had the hits for James Clemens. Smith drove in a pair of runs.

Prattville Christian 2, Holy Spirit 1 (OT)

The Panthers improved to 5-9 on the year and 2-2 in Class 1A/3A, Area 4 play with the overtime win over Holy Spirit at home on Friday.

Junior Cade Segars scored both of Prattville Christian’s goals in the win – including the game-winner in the overtime period.

Junior Spencer Perkins got the victory in goal for the Panthers, who will host Brewbaker Tech on Monday.

Montgomery Academy 10, Park Crossing 0

The Eagles rolled past Class 6A, Area 4 foe Park Crossing on Saturday with junior Ethan Yi pouring in 4 goals. Montgomery Academy had already clinched the top spot in the area before the rout.

Montgomery Academy also got a hat trick from senior Win Berry and goals from Jacob Stubblefield, Brewer Welch and Luis Rubio. The Eagles got 2 assists from John Allen Lachney and from Welch.

Hampton Welch had a clean sheet in goal for the Eagles (11-5-1).

Montgomery Academy will host its final regular-season game on Monday against Dothan and will open the playoffs at home on Thursday vs. Stanhope Elmore.

Hoover wins Hewitt-Trussville Invitational

Hoover topped Vestavia Hills 183.5-120.5 to win the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational meet on Friday. The host team finished third in the 25-team event with 99.5 points.

Hamilton was fourth with 42 points, followed by Cherokee County (31), Mountain Brook (29), Madison Academy (28), Moody (25), Center Point (19), Homewood (18), Woodlawn (16), Springville (16), Jasper (15), John Carroll (14), Southside-Gadsden (13), Ashville (10), Ramsay (9), Providence Christian (8) Altamont (5), Hueytown (4), White Plains (4), Montgomery Academy (3.5), Leeds (3), Parker (2), Oneonta (1) and Wenonah (1).

Hoover’s Dallas Beck won the 200- and 400-meter dashes at 21.94 and 49.21. Grant Weighall of Hoover won the discus throw at 150-11 and the javelin throw at 192-50.

Bob Jones outscored Sparkman 206.5-108 to win Saturday’s Florence Pre-Sectional track meet. Florence finished third in the 12-team event with 107.5 points.

Hazel Green finished fourth with 99.5 points, followed by Lexington (46), Lawrence County (37), Central-Florence (18), East Limestone (16.5), Wilson (15), Lawrence County, Tenn., (13), Sheffield (9) and West Limestone (1).

The Class 4A sixth-ranked Lions rolled over Class 6A Pleasant Grove in the Hoover Classic on Friday as Hatton Behel tossed a 3-inning no-hitter. The eighth-grader gave up an earned run with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Abby Herndon went 2-for-3 with a triple, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored for Brooks. Faith Roberson and Preslie Bunch had doubles, with Bunch going 3-for-3 with 4 runs and Roberson getting 2 hits in 4 at-bats with a pair of runs.

BrayLeigh Leone went 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs and a run scored, Adrianna Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and 3 runs and Harmony Behel went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Monica Rose took the loss for the Spartans, allowing 17 runs – 16 earned – on 15 hits. She struck out 2 and walked 7 in 4 innings.

Also on Friday, Brooks edged Mortimer Jordan 2-1 as Herndon struck out 11 in 6 innings. She gave up an earned run on 3 hits with a walk. She also went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Bunch went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored for Brooks. Roberson was 1-for-3 with a run scored, Karley Moreland was 1-for-2 and Ja’Mya Edwards was 1-for-2.

Aubrey Gunter was saddled with the loss for Mortimer Jordan. She gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk in 5.1 innings.

Class 3A No. 6 Piedmont scored a run in the top of the first inning and held off Class 5A No. 8 Sardis on Saturday.

Savannah Smith struck out 8 Lions, gave up 3 hits and walked 1 in earning the win. Madison Harris took the loss, allowing an earned run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks in 6 innings.

Cayla Brothers went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Piedmont. Carson Young and Jaycee Glover had the other hits for the winners.

Huntsville 4, Brooks 3

The Class 7A No. 7 Crimson Panthers edged 4A No. 6 Brooks in a game played at the Hoover Met Complex on Saturday.

Isabella Myers and Katie Schuler both homered for Huntsville. Myers finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored and pitcher Schuler was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run.

Abigail Gant doubled for Huntsville. Sara Carter and Amya Duster also had hits in the win.

Emily Burgreen and Adair Allen had doubles for Madison Academy and Evie Stephenson went 3-for-3 with a run scored from her leadoff position. Memphis Houston and Burgreen had an RBI each.

Carson Young took the loss for Piedmont, allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in 6.1 innings.

Cayla Brothers and Cacey Brothers were both 1-for-3 at the plate. Jaycee Glover finished 1-for-2 for Piedmont.

The Class 7A Jaguars blanked Class 4A No. 6 Brooks on Saturday in the Hoover Classic at the Hoover Met Complex as Ella Ussery tossed a 2-hitter with no walks and 3 strikeouts. She helped her cause in the circle with a double in 3 at-bats.

Teagan Huey also doubled for Spain Park in 3 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored. Margaret Daniel, Tatum Lasseter and Klara Thompson also had hits in the win, with Lasseter notching an RBI.

Ellie Partrick took the loss for Brooks, despite 10 strikeouts on the day. She gave up 4 runs – 3 earned – on 5 hits with 10 walks.

Baylee Darby doubled and Faith Roberson had a single in the loss.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Faith Academy 11, Austin 0

The Class 5A No. 10 Rams blanked 7A No. 9 Austin in the Hoover Classic on Friday, with Lillie Stagner and Mylee Stagner both ripping grand slam home runs.

Victoria Nobles picked up the win in the circle, allowing 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk.

Faith also beat John Carroll 11-1, lost 6-2 to Thompson and 5-4 to Oakland, Tenn., in the Classic.

Prattville Christian 13, Maplesville 2

The Panthers ran their record to 21-4 with three wins on Saturday in their PCA Round Robin event.

Prattville Christian’s Alivia Messick struck out 11 to earn the win over Maplesville. Sara Payton Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double with 5 RBIs. Saniyah Weaver went 4-for-5, Kandice Crosby was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Erin Williams was 2-for-3 and Chloe Hollon had 2 hits, including a homer.

In a 6-4 win over Handley, Laura Beth NeSmith picked up a complete-game win in the circle. Hollon had 2 hits, including a home run, with 3 RBIs. Crosby was 2-for-3 and Weaver went 2-for-4.

Prattville Christian topped T.R. Miller 9-4 in a rain-shortened game. NeSmith had a 2-run home run, Schmidt had a solo homer, Weaver and Payson Hanson were both 2-for-3.

PCA will host Thorsby at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Hoover 3, Auburn 1

The Bucs took a 1-0 lead into halftime in the home showdown between No. 2 Hoover and No. 3 Auburn on Friday.

Hoover got goals from Addie Bridges, Elise Marquardt and Dee Dee Udeh.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Westminster Christian 5, Athens 0

The top ranked Class 4A Wildcats ran their record to 13-1-1 on the year with the home win over Class 6A No. 7 Athens on Friday.

Senior AnnaLi Weekley scored a pair of goals to run her school-record career total to 139.

Westminster Christian also got goals from Annie Collier, Alex Menin and Caleigh Lewis. Collier also had 2 assists. Menin and Jasmine Feld each had an assist.

The Wildcats outshot Athens 39-9 and their defense recorded 27 recoveries with Lewis leading the way with 9.

Keeper Piper Blazier stopped 6 shots while Jameah Maxtion had 3 saves.

Athens is 10-7-4 on the season.

Prattville Christian 3, Holy Spirit 0

The Panthers shut out Holy Spirit at home on Friday to improve to 5-9 on the season.

Senior Avery Rogers led Prattville Christian, scoring all three goals on Senior Night. Freshman Addison Sutton had a pair of assists in the win. Senior keeper Kendall Jordan recorded the clean sheet for PCA.

Prattville Christian is 2-2 in Class 1A/3A, Area 4 and will host Brewbaker Tech on Monday.

St. James 5, Trinity 0

Class 1A/3A No. 1 St. James blanked Montgomery rival Trinity on Friday at Carlisle Field. AHSAA all-time career goals leader Katie Brightwell scored all 5 goals in the shutout.

Mary Grace Hixon had 4 assists and KK Corley had the another.

Katie Irving recorded her ninth shutout of the season with the help of the back line of Hannah McCain, Hope McCain, Corley and Charlie Jenkins.

The Trojans (12-1-1) play at 7A Central-Phenix City on Tuesday.

The host team Huskies won the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational meet on Friday, edging Hoover 126-124. Mountain Brook finished third in the 20-team event with 91 points.

Bob Jones wins Florence Pre-Sectional meet

The Patriots outscored Sparkman 192-161 to win the Florence Pre-Sectional track meet on Saturday. Bob Jones took seven first-place finishes in the 11-team meet.

Hazel Green finished third with 78 points, followed by Florence (53), Lawrence County (50), Central-Florence (33), Sheffield (28), Lexington (26), Lawrence County, Tenn., (14), Wilson (14), West Limestone (3) and East Limestone (3).

Kalah Christopher won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump for Bob Jones. She ran the 100 in 12.73, the 200 in 26.75 and finished the long jump at 17-04.00.
