Spring sports roundup: Bob Jones tops James Clemens for 4th straight area title
Bob Jones went to extra innings to beat Madison City Schools rival James Clemens 6-3 on the road on Thursday to claim the Class 7A, Area 8 baseball championship for the fourth year in a row – and for the sixth time in seven years. The Jets finished second in the area with the loss.
The second-ranked and defending state champion Patriots needed 8 innings to earn the win, pushing across 3 runs on singles by Zack Johnson, Mason Rinehart and Mick Tyrrell, walks by Tanner Hermesch and Dillon Adkins and a hit-by-pitch by Robert Chatmon. Rinehart, Tyrrell and Adkins drove in a run apiece in the decisive half-inning.
Bob Jones out-hit the Jets 11-6 and Hermesch struck out 11 in 8 innings, including the final out of the ballgame. The Shelton State Community College commitment allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits and walked a batter.
Tyrrell was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Johnson went 2-for-4 for the Patriots. Adkins had a home run, Tyrrell had a pair of doubles and Hermesch also had a double.
Matthew Drinkwater took the loss in relief of starter Jesse Isensee. Drinkwater allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in the final 3 innings. Isensee gave up a pair of earned runs on 5 hits with a strikeout in 5 innings.
Hayden Udovich was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Jets and Isensee had a double in 3 at-bats with 2 RBIs. Drinkwater was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Bob Jones will host James Clemens for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. In the opening round of the 7A playoffs, the Patriots will host Thompson while James Clemens will travel to Tuscaloosa County.

Hartselle 15, Bob Jones 1
Top-ranked Class 6A Hartselle scored 7 runs in the top of the seventh to polish off a rout of 7A No. 2 Bob Jones on Monday at Madison. The Tigers gave up a first-inning run, but answered that with a pair of runs in the top of the second and 3 more in both the fourth and fifth innings.
The Patriots committed 5 errors and had 3 hits while Hartselle had 8 hits and an error.
Cole Griffin went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs for the Tigers while Christopher Hutson had a double in his only at-bat with a pair of RBIs. Asher Doepel went 2-for-4 with 4 runs scored. Witt Crisler, Cain Falciani and Samuel Gillette also had RBIs.
Starter Jace Meadows earned the win, allowing a run on no hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk in 1.2 innings. Ty Marsh replaced Meadows and gave up a hit with 2 strikeouts and a pair of walks in 1.2 innings. Doepel pitched the next 3 innings, giving up 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and Carson Wilson finished the day, recording 2 strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.
Cole Spanier went 1-for-2 with a run scored for Bob Jones. Zack Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cam Martin was 1-for-3.
Graham Segraves – the first of five Bob Jones pitchers – took the loss, allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks. The Patriots had 8 wild pitches in the loss, walked 10 batters and struck out 12.
Hartselle opens playoff action on Friday at home against Southside-Gadsden.
BIRMINGHAM
Homewood 12, Ramsay 3
On Monday, the Class 6A ninth-ranked Patriots downed Ramsay in a game played at Rickwood Field as four pitchers combined to allow the Rams 4 hits – including a towering home run off the left field wall by Armani Rogers in the bottom of the first inning.
Homewood scored 9 runs in the top of the first inning with Jack Bland leading off with a triple as the Patriots sent 12 batters to the plate – 8 before Ramsay recorded an out.
Starter Justin Gamble picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. He gave up 2 runs on a hit with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 innings. Bland allowed a run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks over the next 2 innings. Randall Gartman pitched 2 hitless innings with 4 strikeouts and Michael Baguley pitched a hitless final inning with a strikeout and a walk.
Bland went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a double with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs. Levi Nickoli was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. Connor Brunner was 1-for-1 with an RBI and 2 runs.
Pierce Alexander, Gavin Franklin and Kelbi Tunstall had a hit apiece for Ramsay. Starter Fred Edwards took the loss, allowing 7 runs – 3 earned – with 3 walks.
Cullman 12, Homewood 5
The Bearcats capitalized on 5 errors and 4 walks in the first inning to knock off Class 6A No. 9 Homewood in the regular season finale for both teams. Cullman (17-14) and the Patriots (27-7) used six pitchers each in the postseason tune-up.
Griffin Wright got the win for Cullman, working the final inning. He struck out 3 and walked 1.
Brooks Heatherly went 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored in the win. Carson Stancil was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Fysher Dahlke had a hit with a pair of RBIs.
Cooper Sain was saddled with the loss, giving up 6 runs – 5 earned – on 2 hits with 4 walks in one-third of an inning.
Jack Ross was 2-for-3 with a 3-run home run and a double for Homewood. Will Dobbins was 2-for-4 with a double. George Brockwell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Will Siegel was 2-for-3.
Homewood will host Clay-Chalkville on Friday for a first-round playoff doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Cullman will host Hazel Green on Friday for a 5 p.m. first-round doubleheader.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
St. Luke’s 6, Satsuma 3
Jeremy Menhennett and Cooper Frampton combined to go 6-for-6 to lead St. Luke’s past Class 4A No. 10 Satsuma in a home game on Monday.
Menhennett, the Wildcats’ catcher and cleanup hitter, drove in a pair of runs with 3 singles. He drove in Russ Warner to give St. Luke’s a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
Cooper Frampton reached base on a pair of singles, a double and a walk. Frampton’s first-inning double drove in Warner to open the scoring.
Frampton also picked up the win with a complete-game effort, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and a season-best 10 strikeouts.
Ben Glen was the only Gator with multiple hits, a double in the third inning and a leadoff solo home run to left field in the fifth inning.
St. Luke’s improved to 18-9 on the season while Satsuma (18-10) will host New Brockton in the Class 4A playoffs. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday with a third game set for Saturday, if necessary.

Montgomery Academy 2, Highland Home 0
The Eagles closed out the season with the shutout over Highland Home at home on Monday. Montgomery Academy finishes the season at 13-10.
Senior Andrew Hosein earned the win with a 6-inning, 2-hit shutout. Hosein struck out 6 in the win. Oscar Fiore struck out 2 in his final-inning save.
Reid McBride went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Montgomery Academy, which out-hit the Flying Squadron 9-2. William Marks had a hit with an RBI.
Paxton Haigler, Oscar Fiore, Vincent Desautels, Andrew Hosein, Chapman Baker and Nathan Applegate all contributed a hit for the Eagles.

BIRMINGHAM
Oak Mountain 3, Hoover 2 (KFTM)
The Eagles won a thriller on sudden death penalty kicks in a showdown between the top two teams in the nation, according to MaxPreps, at Oak Mountain on Thursday. Oak Mountain is also No. 1 in the AHSAA soccer coaches Class 7A poll – and in the Super Poll of the top teams regardless of classification – while Hoover is No. 2 in 7A.
Oak Mountain ran its win streak to 25-0 this season with the two-overtime victory. Coach David DiPiazza’s squad has won 44 straight and has run its streak of games without a loss to 56.
The Eagles scored with seconds remaining in the first half to break a scoreless tie and Hoover knotted it in the second half on a penalty.
Gabe Capocci scored on a penalty for Oak Mountain and Nate Taylor added the Eagles’ second goal in regular time. Patrick Anderson and Ben Bruns scored for Hoover (18-2-1).
In the penalty kick shootout, each team scored 4 out of 5 tries in the first OT. John Will Peterson’s goal in the bottom left corner of the net in the sudden death penalty kicks decided it after Hoover’s final try missed wide right.
On Tuesday, Oak Mountain topped Class 6A No. 1 Homewood 2-1 on the road. It was the Eagles’ second straight win over a No. 1-ranked team after beating 5A No. 1 Guntersville 10-0 on Saturday.
All three goals in the fast-paced contest were scored in the final 20 minutes.
Oak Mountain’s Gabe Capocci scored a goal and had an assist on Michael Dennis’ game-winner.
Gardendale 3, Oneonta 2
Gardendale’s Logan Stewart scored on a header off a corner kick with 1:14 to go, providing the game-winner Thursday night at Driver Stadium in Gardendale.
Oneonta built a 1-0 halftime lead, but the Rockets’ Christopher Bean scored on an assist from Mikey Pribly in the opening minute of the second half. Stewart scored on a header with 20:23 to go to make it 2-1, but Oneonta tied the game at 2-all with 5:40 to go.
Stewart’s second goal – on a header off a corner kick by Steven Castro – proved to be the difference.
The win capped a strong week for the ninth-ranked Rockets (16-3-2), who clinched the Class 6A, Area 12 title by beating Clay-Chalkville 3-1 on Monday before earning 2-all tie on the road against Class 7A Vestavia Hills on Tuesday.
Against Clay-Chalkville, Mario Castro, Eli Parker and Steven Moody scored goals.
Against Vestavia, Gardendale junior Wyatt Chandler scored 2 goals in span of 2 minutes late in the second half to salvage the draw.
Chandler scored with 6:07 to go to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then, less than 2 minutes later, Pribyl had a scoring chance but was fouled in the box. Chandler banged home the penalty kick to tie it at 2-all.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Baker 4, Mary G. Montgomery 1
The 10th-ranked Class 7A Hornets improved to 16-5-1 on the year with the win at Mary G. Montgomery on Thursday.
Grantham Morgan scored a pair of second-half goals in the final regular-season game for both teams. Kayson Lawrence gave Baker a 1-0 lead with a goal within the first 12 minutes. Morgan pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second half before Jerson Rubi capped off the scoring in the final 3 minutes.
Mary G. Montgomery completed its season at 9-13-2.

Prattville Christian 4, Autauga Academy 0
The Panthers blanked Autauga Academy on the road on Monday as Landyn Guidry and Justin Chapman combined for the shutout in goal.
Cooper Dunn, Joshua Rybarczyk, Ethan Green and Justin Chapman each scored a goal for Prattville Christian.
TENNIS
Montgomery Academy rolls to Section 2 title
The Eagles won the Class 7A, Section 2 championship on Tuesday, capturing 8 of 9 matches. Montgomery Academy has won the section tournament for 25 years in a row.
The Eagles and second-place Enterprise qualified for the state tournament beginning April 21 in Mobile.
Montgomery Academy finished with 54 points with Enterprise earning 36. Auburn was third with 28 points, followed by Opelika (19) and Prattville (9). Dothan and Smiths Station did not earn any points in the tournament.
Anton Yang and Bo Johnston won the No. 3 doubles match to improve to 28-0 on the season. The Eagles also swept the singles matches.
At No. 1, John Alford beat Graham Andress of Enterprise, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2, Jackson Brown beat Camden Coburn of Auburn, 6-2, 6-4. Ford Morano defeated Auburn’s Jay Swan, 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 at No. 3. At No. 4, Edwin Wu beat Tripp Rascoe of Enterprise, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5, Liam Baker defeated Roger Stockton of Enterprise, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7. At No. 6, Duncan McInnes beat Tucker Kelley of Enterprise, 6-0, 6-2.
In the No. 1 match, Alford and Brown beat Enterprise’s Andress and Garrett Nelson, 7-5, 6-2 and at No. 3 Yang/Johnston topped Holtz Basquin/Martin Lee of Auburn, 6-1, 7-5. At No. 2, Rascoe and Julian Gunter beat Kwan/Justin Lee of Auburn, 6-3, 7-5.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Orange Beach 17, Daphne 1
Class 4A No. 1 Orange Beach slammed four home runs and pounded out 17 hits in the rout at Class 7A No. 3 Daphne on Thursday.
The Makos (29-2) led just 5-1 after 5 innings, but scored 4 in the top of the sixth and 8 in the seventh to blow the game open.
Mississippi State commitment Teagan Revette hit 2 homers and University of Arkansas commitment Ava Hodo and LC Robbins had a home run each. Revette went 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Hodo was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Robbins was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
South Carolina signee KG Favors went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for Orange Beach. She allowed just 2 hits and a run, striking out 11 and walking 4.
Reigning Miss Softball Vic Moten, a University of Alabama signee, took the loss. She allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits, but struck out 11. Abby Johnson homered for Daphne’s only run.
The Makos play at Fairhope on Wednesday. The Trojans (31-6) host Satsuma on Tuesday.
Mary G. Montgomery 18, Theodore 0
Freshman Lila Coates drove in 4 runs as Mary G. Montgomery whipped Theodore on the road on Thursday. Coates had a single and a triple and scored 3 runs as the Vikings hit a season-high with 18 runs.
MGM scored 10 runs in the first inning as Hannah Fennner capped off the scoring in the inning with a 2-out double to drive in Gracie Coleman and Ava Graddick.
Fenner, Coleman and Malena Simonson each had a pair of hits for MGM as the Vikings totaled 14 hits.
Lila Coates picked up the win in the circle, allowing 2 hits with 3 strikeouts over 2 innings.
Mary G. Montgomery improved to 16-15-1 and will host the Class 7A, Area 1 tournament. MGM will play Davidson on April 25 at 11 a.m. Baker will play Alma Bryant at 1 p.m. in the double elimination tournament.
On Monday, Mary G. Montgomery slipped past Citronelle 6-5 on the road. Coleman scored 3 runs as the Vikings built a 6-0 lead and held off the home team.
Coleman had a pair of singles and reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Fenner had a 2-out RBI single and a sacrifice fly RBI in the win.
Simonson and Harmony Kennedy, who had a double, also had multiple hits for the Vikings.
Citronelle leadoff hitter Jazlyn Remond had a pair of hits and scored twice, once on an RBI single from Madelyn Dickinson in the bottom of the seventh that brought the Wildcats within a run.
Simonson came on for the Vikings in relief to retire the final two Citronelle batters with a pair of runners left on base.
Jodee Lambert took the loss for Citronelle (3-16), pitching 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, striking out 4.
Annie Wolfe picked up the victory in the circle for MGM (15-15-1), giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 7 in 5 innings.

Sparkman 13, Grissom 3
Laila Watkins ripped a 2-run home run as the Class 7A No. 6 Senators rolled to a 5-inning run-rule win over Grissom at home on Tuesday. Watkins was 1-for-1 at the plate with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored for Sparkman.
The Senators scored 3 in the first inning, 4 in the second, 5 in the third and finished it with a run in the fifth.
Winning pitcher Eden Parker helped herself at the plate by going 1-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. She gave up 3 unearned runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5 innings.
Kara Burman had a double and Bella Mayfield went 3-for-4 with 2 runs for Sparkman.
Eighth grader Eve Plemons took the loss for Grissom, allowing 10 runs – 7 earned – on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 innings. Kenadie Curry gave up 3 runs – 1 earned – on 5 hits in the final 2.1 innings.
Maddie Wissman had a double in 2 at-bats for the Tigers. Harper Presley, Teagen Harmon and Kendal Blocker had an RBI apiece.
Westminster Christian 8, DAR 2
The Wildcats rolled to an 8-0 lead over DAR on Senior Night as lone senior Kaylin McRee went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Westminster Christian out-hit the Patriots 14-8 and had three players finish with 3 hits apiece – A.P. Slaten, Carleigh Gothart and Sloan Holiday, who also had 3 RBIs.
Gothart went the distance in the circle, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits with 7 strikeouts.
DAR got on the board in the sixth with a pair of runs on 4 hits, but Gothart got out of the inning, stranding runners on second and third.
Westminster (13-10) will host Lindsay Lane on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

Prattville Christian 13, Trinity 1
The Class 4A No. 9 Panthers scored 8 runs in the second inning on the way to the home win on Thursday. Prattville Christian collected 16 hits in the rout.
Alivia Messick threw a 1-hitter with 5 strikeouts and a walk for Prattville Christian. She allowed an unearned run in 4 innings.
Peyton Thrash and Addison Byrd had 3 hits apiece and drove in a pair of runs each in the win. Saniyah Weaver and Chloe Hollon also had 2 RBIs apiece. Sara Payton Schmidt went 2-for-4 for PCA.
Trinity starter Marley Sharpless gave up 10 runs on 12 hits with a walk in 3 innings.
On Tuesday, Prattville Christian beat Tallassee 8-3 at home to clinch the 4A, Area 5 championship. Prattville Christian will host the area tournament on April 25-26.
Laura Nesmith earned a complete-game win, striking out 11 and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with a walk.
Megan Masters was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs for PCA and Weaver went 3-for-4 with a double. Chasiti Lindsey and Schmidt also had multiple hits in the win.
The Panthers will host Pelham at 9 a.m. and T.R. Miller at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Brantley 16, Elba 1
The Class 1A No. 5 Bulldogs rolled over Area 3 foe Elba on the road as Alex Grimes tossed a 3-inning no-hitter. The sophomore gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the first after Brantley had scored 11 in the top of the inning. She struck out 6 and walked 2 and helped herself at the plate with a hit in 2 at-bats with 2 RBIs.
Coco Stamps was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in the win. Savannah Nichols was 2-for-2 with a double and 4 RBIs. Marley Kilcrease had a double for the area champion Bulldogs, who improved to 19-11 and 8-0.
Mary Brooklyn O’Neal took the loss for Elba and Anastasia Caldwell got an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
On Tuesday, Grimes struck out 16 and pitched a 1-hitter as the Bulldogs whipped McKenzie 11-0 on the road. Grimes also had 3 hits with 4 RBIs and scored twice for Brantley.
Kilcrease had 2 hits with 2 RBIs and Stamps had a pair of hits with a triple and 2 RBIs. Kennedy Baggett had 2 hits with 2 RBIs.
Brantley blanked Red Level 9-0 on Monday to clinch the Class 1A, Area 3 title. Grimes struck out 13 in 7 innings and helped herself with a single and a run scored.
Baggett had 3 hits, including a double, and Collin Hawthorne had a pair of doubles with 3 RBIs. Kilcrease had a double and 2 RBIs.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Westminster Christian 3, Fort Payne 0
Class 5A second-ranked Westminster Christian wrapped up the regular season at home with the shutout of 6A No. 7 Fort Payne on Thursday. The Wildcats earned their 11th shutout in 13 wins, with standout defenders Calli Salon, Riley Sisson and Liberty Kim. Westminster Christian, 13-3-1 on the year, allowed 0.76 goals per game.
Westminster out-shot Fort Payne 17-6 with goals scored by Carson Heater, freshman Annie Collier and Caleigh Lewis. Ava Martinez contributed two assists.
Heater put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the 36th minute and Westminster carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. Collier extended Westminster’s lead to 2-0 after driving the ball into the net following a towering punt from goalkeeper Piper Blazier that got over the heads of the Fort Payne defense. Blazier stopped all 6 shots to preserve the shutout.
Lewis finished the scoring with a goal from a corner kick Martinez in the 74th minute.
Westminster will host Russellville in the first round of the playoffs next week.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats rolled over Class 1A/3A No. 3 Collinsville 7-1 at home, outshooting the Panthers 27-6.
Westminster Christian’s Collier finished with a hat trick and Alondra Piers scored 2 goals in the win. The winners also got a goal from Alex Menin and Martinez.
Blazier faced 6 shots on the day thanks to strong defensive effort from Martinez, Solan and Kim.
The game was scoreless until Piers hit the back of the net at the 36th minute to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the break.
Westminster Christian got 6 goals in the span of 9 minutes in the second half.
The Wildcats (12-3-1) will host Class 6A No. 7 Fort Payne to close out the regular season.

Saint James 1, Montgomery Catholic 0
The seventh-ranked Trojans blanked No. 1 Montgomery Catholic at home on Monday for a Class 4A, Area 3 victory. It was the ninth shutout of the season for Saint James.
Sana Shuford led the Saint James back line with goalkeeper Stella Williams earning the clean sheet.
KK Corley scored off an assist from Ragan King in the first half.
On Thursday, Saint James blanked Tallassee 1-0 at the Wetumpka Sports Complex. Corley scored the only goal off an assist from Natalie Barton.
Williams recorded her 10th shutout of the season to keep the streak of six matches without a goal.
The Trojans are 12-2 overall and will play at Trinity at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Prattville Christian 10, Autauga Academy 0
Aiden Williams scored 4 goals and had an assist as the Panthers blanked Autauga Academy on the road on Monday.
Mimi Szeker and Scarlett Mahlke had a pair of goals each for Prattville Christian. Mady Roy and Abby Avant had a goal each.
Mahlke, Baylee Rogers and Eden Alexander combined for the shutout in goal.
