Spring sports roundup: Bayside Academy sweeps UMS-Wright

Class 4A No. 2-ranked Bayside Academy’s baseball squad finished a Class 4A, Area 1 three-game sweep against rival UMS-Wright on Thursday.

The Admirals (15-5) won the opener 4-1 at home on Wednesday and followed that with a 9-6, 11-9 sweep at UMS on Thursday.

In Game 1 Thursday, Cole Dean and Tait Moore had 2 hits and an RBI apiece. Carson Joiner also had an RBI. Gatlin Pitts and Tait Moore each had 2 hits and Pitts drove in a pair of runs. William Norton got the win in relief of Joiner. Pitts got the save. Jaye drove in 3 runs for the Bulldogs. Tyler Waters added 2 RBIs.

Jake Jaye pitched all 6 innings for the Bulldogs.

In the Game 2 slugfest, Pitts, Dean and Broadhead each drove in a pair of runs. Pitts was 3-for-4 overall.

Bayside took an 11-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh before UMS closed the gap.

Moore got the final two outs for the save. Grady Stokes got the win in relief of Dean.

Waters drove in four runs for UMS.

On Wednesday, Bayside Academy topped the Bulldogs 4-1 at home. Teague Broadhead pitched 4 no-hit innings, giving up a run with 7 walks and 5 strikeouts. Tait Moore,

Broadhead pitched 4 no-hit innings at home on Wednesday. He allowed a run and struck out 5 with 7 walks. Moore, Dean and Pitts all pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Dean and Moore had a pair of hits and an RBI apiece for the Admirals. Carson Joiner also had an RBI.

Jaye took the loss for the Bulldogs.

Saraland edged Alexandria in a walk-off win on Tuesday as Cam Warren struck out 6 and walked 1 to pick up the win.

Hewitt-Trussville 10, Piedmont 4

The third-ranked Class 7A Huskies topped Piedmont and Pepperell, Ga., by identical scores on Wednesday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

Colby Durden picked up the win over Piedmont, striking out 14 batters in 6 innings.

In the two wins, Steele Hall had 4 hits with a home run, 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Brett Moseley had 4 hits, Cam Simpson had 4 hits with a triple and 4 RBIs. Rob Wright had a pair of hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Carson Wideman had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI.

On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville blanked Hokes Bluff 10-0 as Christian Helmers threw a 5-inning complete-game 1-hit shutout. He struck out 7.

Wideman had 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the win. Rob Wright had a pair of hits with an RBI and Durden drove in 2 runs with a hit.

On Monday, Hewitt-Trussville beat Hueytown 8-2 as Dylan Lewkutz threw a complete-game 3-hitter.

Moseley had 4 hits with a triple and 3 RBIs in the win. Helmers had a pair of hits with a double. Hall had 2 hits, Wideman drove in 2 runs, Wright had 2 hits and an RBI and Drew Ollis drove in a run.

Briarwood Christian 5, O’Fallon (Ill.) 3

The Lions pulled to a 5-0 third-inning lead and held off O’Fallon, Ill., on Thursday in the Buccaneer Classic at Hoover.

Jackson Barnes went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Briarwood. Jacob Souders doubled and was 2-for-4 with a run. Brooks Allred went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Houston Hartsfield, Seth Staggs, James Clark, Parker Daniels and Brayden Robertson all had singles.

Souders picked up the win on the mound, giving up 2 runs – 1 earned – on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk over 6 innings. Parker Sfakianos closed out the game, allowing a run on 3 hits.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Madison County 3-12, St. John Paul II 1-2

Madison County swept the Class 4A, Area 13 double-header over St. John Paul II at home in Gurley on Wednesday to improve to 4-0 in area play and drop the Falcons to 0-4.

The Tigers scored single runs in the second, third and fifth after falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first in Game 1. SJP2 out-hit Madison County 6-3 and had an error while the Tigers had 2.

Jace Duckett earned the win and helped his cause with a home run in 2 at-bats. Chris Fearnside went 1-for-1 with a run scored and Braden Reed tripled in 2 at-bats and drove in a run.

Duckett gave up an earned run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks over 6 innings. Riley Tipton closed out the win, allowing a hit with a strikeout and a walk in the seventh.

Ryan Huhlein took the loss for St. John Paul II, giving up 3 runs – 2 earned – on 3 hits. He struck out 1 and walked 2 in 5 innings.

Luke Songy was 1-for-3 with a double in the loss. Mark Andrzejewski went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Falcons. Andrew Lang was 2-for-3 and Tucker Freeman had a single in 3 at-bats.

In Game 2, Tipton earned the win, shutting out SJP2 on 3 hits over 2 innings. He struck out 1 and walked 1. Keigan McClure allowed 2 earned runs on a hit with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks in 2.1 innings. Connor Drake finished the final 1.2 innings with no runs or hits with a strikeout.

Memphis Scott doubled and drove in a run in 3 at-bats for Madison County. Jake Thornton was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Reed was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Nick Sharp, Tipton and Drake added hits. Tipton had a pair of RBIs. Ayden Deerman and Drake drove in a run apiece.

Songy took the loss, allowing 4 runs – 3 earned – on 4 hits with 3 walks in 2 innings. He was 2-for-3 with an RBI. J Smothers went 1-for-3 and Blake Davis was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Freeman also scored for the Falcons.

On Monday, Madison County won the series opener 7-1 at St. John Paul II. The Tigers carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh before piling up 5 more to close out the win.

Madison County had 5 hits – all singles – while Thornton held St. John Paul II to 2 hits and an unearned run. Thornton struck out 4 in 7 innings.

Fearnside was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Sharp (1-for-2), Cole Mullins (1-for-4) and Drake (0-for-2) all had RBIs. Duckett scored a pair of runs.

Andrzejewski and Songy had hits for the Falcons.

Songy took the loss in relief of Andrzejewski, allowing 5 runs – 4 earned – on 2 hits with a strikeout and 3 walks over 2.1 innings. Andrzejewski struck out 5 and gave up 2 hits and 2 unearned runs with 4 walks.

Clarksville (Tenn.) 14, Hartselle 5

The top-ranked Class 6A Tigers saw their seven-game win streak snapped in their second game on Thursday at Hoover in the Buccaneer Classic. The loss dropped Hartselle to 18-5 on the season.

Hartselle led 5-4 after three innings before the 13-1 Wildcats held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way. Clarksville finished the game with 2 in the fourth, 5 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth and another run in the seventh. Clarksville pounded out 15 hits against five Hartselle pitchers while holding Hartselle to 6. The Tigers also had 2 errors on the day to none for Clarksville.

Carson Wilson took the loss in relief of starter Peyton Steele. Wilson gave up 6 runs – 4 earned – on 8 hits over 2 innings. Only Jo Williamson, the fourth Hartselle pitcher, struck out a Clarksville batter with 2. He gave up 2 runs – 1 earned – on 3 hits in an inning’s work. Steele allowed 3 earned runs on 2 hits in 2 innings.

Steele, Cam Palahach and Cade Miles had doubles for the Tigers. Palahach had 2 RBIs while Cade Miles, Cole Miles and Steele had an RBI each. Cade Miles, Cole Miles, Williamson, Palahach, Lawson Williams and Steele had hits in the loss.

Clarksville’s Collin Windham tripled while Ben Moore, Jack Wyatt and Korbin Reynolds all doubled. Dawson Smith earned the win in relief of starter Porter Murff, throwing 5 shutout innings. He allowed 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4.

Hartselle 10, Enterprise 2

Jace Meadows struck out 5 and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits to lead the Tigers past Enterprise in their first game in the Buccaneer Classic in Hoover on Thursday. Hartselle jumped to a 3-0 lead after three innings and led 9-2 headed into the top of the seventh.

Jo Williamson smacked a home run and a double for Hartselle, going 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Peyton Steele was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, Cade Miles went 2-for-2 with 3 runs and an RBI and Lawson Williams was 2-for-4 with a run.

Andrew Coleman struck out 3 and walked 3 in 2 shutout innings of relief.

Starter Brady Richardson took the loss for Enterprise, allowing 7 runs – 3 earned – on 7 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 1 in 4.1 innings.

Brady Cavanaugh, Michael Vanderheyden, Gavin Maund and Edward Hall had hits in the loss.

Westminster Christian 16, Randolph 1

Eighth-ranked Class 4A Westminster Christian completed a season sweep of rival Randolph on the road on Thursday. The Wildcats disposed of the Raiders in 5 innings.

Joshua Goode got the win, allowing a run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts over 5 innings. He coaxed 9 ground-outs and his defense turned a pair of double plays.

Westminster, now 15-5 on the year and riding a 6-game winning streak, had 9 hits and benefitted from 16 walks from four Randolph pitchers. The Wildcats have averaged 10 runs a game during the win streak and has allowed 6 runs.

Jackson Lange led the Wildcats, going 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored. Sean Lapinskes went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs.

Westminster plays at Madison Academy on Monday.

On Wednesday, Westminster whipped Randolph 12-1 in a 5-inning run-rule game at home.

Lange gave up a run on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts in his complete-game performance for Westminster Christian. He helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Third baseman Amos Baldwin was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored in the win.

Westminster had 9 hits and benefitted from 7 walks and 3 errors. The game was tied at 1 in the bottom of the second when the Wildcats erupted for 5 runs. Westminster scored 3 more in the third and 3 in the fourth.

New Hope 13, White Plains 4

The Indians improved to 9-10 on the season with the win at White Plains on Thursday. New Hope scored 13 runs on 14 hits and had an error while the Wildcats had 9 hits and an error.

Lucas Terry earned the win, allowing a run on 5 hits over 4 innings. He struck out 5. Kaleb Arnold gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with a strikeout in 3 innings on the mound.

Charlie Harbin went 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and 3 RBIs. Riley Schutte, Andrew Dudley and Zach Lee had 2 hits and 3 RBIs each. Layton Pohl went 2-for-2, walked twice and scored 3 runs. Dawson Cambron and Grant Maples also had hits for New Hope.

St. James 11, Montgomery Academy 7

Second-ranked Class 3A St. James handed Montgomery Academy a loss at home in its first Area 6 game of the season on Thursday.

Ware McCollum took the loss, allowing 7 runs – 3 earned – on 6 hits over 5 innings. He struck out 6 and walked 6.

Camp Shanahan, Parker Cook and John Allen Jones had 2 RBIs each for Montgomery Academy. Rick McBride had an RBI with Will Hardin and Reid McBride also adding hits.

The Eagles (7-8) will continue the area series at St. James on Friday with games at 4 and 6 p.m.

Reeltown 12, Montgomery Academy 6

Reeltown doubled up Montgomery Academy at home on Monday, despite being out-hit 12-10.

Parker Cook and Rick McBride led Montgomery Academy with 3 hits each with Cook driving in a pair of runs. Andrew Hosein had 2 hits and an RBI and Will Hardin had a hit and an RBI. John Allen Jones, Luke Jones and Ware McCollum all had a hit.

Hardin pitched 2.1 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts for the Eagles. Jones pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Cook pitched an inning, allowing 2 unearned runs on a hit.

Montgomery Academy 9, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 0

The Eagles shut out Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Thursday in a match at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. Montgomery Academy swept singles play with wins from John Alford, Jackson Brown, Edwin Wu, Ford Morano, Anton Yang and Duncan McInnes.

Montgomery Academy (6-2) won the doubles matches with teams of Alford/Brown, Yang/Bo Johnston and Ron Sharma/Morano picking up victories.

MA will host Houston Academy on Monday at the McLemore Tennis Center on the Montgomery Academy campus.

On Wednesday, Montgomery Academy beat Montgomery Catholic 7-2. MA’s No. 1 doubles team of Alford and Brown defeated Montgomery Catholic’s top team of Cooper Davis and Max Freeman to lead the Eagles to the home win.

Montgomery Academy’s Sharma/ Morano and Yang/ Johnston also picked up wins.

The Eagles’ singles winners were Brown, Edwin Wu, Yang and McInnes.

Catholic’s singles winners were Davis and Cole Gillet.

Montgomery Academy, Trinity tie at MCC City Invitational

Montgomery Academy and Trinity tied for the top spot in the MCC City Invitational at Montgomery Country Club on Tuesday as the two squads both shot a team total 305. The field also included Alabama Christian and St. James.

Jackson McIntyre’s 74 led Montgomery Academy. William Hall had a 75, Connor Evans a 76, Thomas Floyd an 80 and Mac Freeman shot 81.

BIRMINGHAM

Hewitt-Trussville 7, Thompson 0

The third-ranked Class 7A Huskies won the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Wednesday, rolling through bracket play at 5-0. Hewitt-Trussville shut out 7A No. 1 Thompson in the championship game.

Sara Phillips earned the win in the circle, giving up 2 hits in beating the Warriors. She helped herself at the plate by getting a pair of hits and driving in 2 runs.

Lexie Kelly went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

In the semifinals, Hewitt topped 6A No. 5 Hartselle 10-5. The Huskies exploded for 8 runs in the opening inning. Corey Goguts smacked a pair of home runs for Hewitt and Kelly had 2 hits and scored twice. Kate Hicks was the winning pitcher.

Hicks also won the quarterfinal contest by holding No. 2 Hoover hitless over 5 innings in a 2-0 win. Makaila Hope had a hit and an RBI while Ahkeela Honeycutt and Chaney Peters scored a run each.

Starter Kaitlyn Raines gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings for Hoover. She struck out 5 and walked 2 in the loss. Hannah Christian and Ki Davis had back-to-back singles to register the Bucs’ only hits.

In the round of 16, the Huskies beat Vestavia Hills 4-1. Zaylen Tucker and Phillips combined to allow 4 hits and a run.

Honeycutt and Chaney Peters had a hit and drove in 2 runs each in the win.

Hewitt-Trussville opened bracket play with a 6-2 win over Southside-Gadsden. Goguts had 2 hits, including a home run. Olivia Faggard had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.

Phillips earned the win in the circle.

Hoover 6, Spain Park 0

The second-ranked Bucs blanked Spain Park on Wednesday in the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Hoover scored 5 runs in the fourth and added another in the top of the sixth.

Bella Foran drove in Hoover’s first run and Olivia Christian followed with a 2-run single. Lindsey Westhoven’s sac fly drove in another run and Mollie Hanson singled in a run to close out the fourth.

Olivia Christian picked up the shutout, allowing 4 hits with 9 strikeouts and no walks over 7 innings. She also finished with a pair of hits, as did Hannah Christian and Ki Davis.

On Monday, Hoover topped Wicksburg 7-3 as Hannah Christian went 3-for-3 at the plate. It was the first of three wins on the day for the Bucs in the Classic.

Olivia Christian picked up the win in the circle, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits. She struck out 3 and walked 3.

Olivia Christian drove in Hoover’s first run with a sacrifice fly. Ava Hartman drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and MC Detwiler singled in a run.

The Bucs pushed their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a run on an error and 2 more on a single by Foran. A Hannah Christian single brought in the final run for Hoover.

Foran had 2 RBIs, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Detwiler also had 2 hits in 2 at-bats.

Ellie Cox took the loss for the Panthers.

The Bucs blanked Normal West, Ill., 10-0 in their second game of the day. Kaitlyn Raines threw a 4-inning perfect game for Hoover. She struck out 5 batters in the win.

Hoover pushed across 8 runs in the fourth inning with Ki Davis, Olivia Christian, Avery Chaney and Hannah Christian, who was 3-for-4 on the day, all driving in a run. Foran and Jesse Givens drove in a pair of runs each in the inning.

Stella Storch had an RBI in the first inning.

In the nightcap, Hoover beat Giles County of Pulaski, Tenn., 8-0.

Hoover jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first as Detwiler drove in a pair of runs with a home run to center field following a run scored on an error and an Olivia Christian RBI single.

The Bucs got 3 more runs in the second on 2 hits – with Hannah Christian’s 2-run homer to right and also scored a run on a wild pitch. Avi Davis drove in a run in the third on a fielder’s choice.

Lindsey Westhoven led Hoover, going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Left-hander Haley Westhoven gave up a hit with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks over 3.1 innings to get the win.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Alma Bryant 3, Satsuma 1

Senior Allie Ladnier threw a complete-game 5-hitter as the Hurricanes topped Class 4A No. 4 Satsuma on the road on Thursday. Ladnier struck out 6 and allowed an earned run on 5 hits.

She helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ana Acree was also 2-for-3 and Haley Anderson went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Buckhorn 10, Brooks 2

The Class 6A Bucks broke open a 2-all game with 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up the home win over 4A No. 6 Brooks on Thursday.

Zaida Zapf pitched a complete-game 4-hitter for Buckhorn. Zapf threw 66 pitches, 44 for strikes, with no walks and no strikeouts. She helped her cause by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Katelyn Hastings went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the win. Audrey Rosenberry was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Leigh-Anna Davis 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Lily Ramsey was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

For Brooks, Adrianna Johnson went 1-for-3 with a run. Karley Moreland was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Donna Roberson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Abigail Herndon was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Herndon took the loss, allowing 10 runs – just 1 earned – on 3 hits in 2.2 innings in relief of Eleanor Patrick.

Piedmont 9, Fort Payne 3

The Class 3A No. 6 Bulldogs jumped to a 5-2 lead after 3 innings on Thursday to earn the home win over Fort Payne.

Carson Young went 3-for-3 for Piedmont with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Cadence Buttram was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Cayla Brothers was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Savannah Smith earned the win in the circle in relief of Young. Smith gave up a run on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5.1 innings. Young gave up 2 runs – 1 earned – on 5 hits in 1.2 innings.

Baylee Green was 1-for-3 with a 2-run homer for Fort Payne. Carlee Cash was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Olivia Lee took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing 9 runs – 3 earned – on 9 hits in 6 innings. She struck out 2 and walked 4.

Prattville Christian 6, Alabama Christian 4

The Panthers improved to 7-3 on the season with the win at Alabama Christian. Alivia Messick earned the win for Prattville Christian, allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits.

Peyton Thrash led the winners at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Payson Hanson was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

PCA will host Wilcox County on Friday for a Class 4A, Area 5 double-header starting at 2 p.m.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Westminster Christian 10, New Hope 0

Top ranked Westminster Christian dominated New Hope on the road on Thursday. The Wildcats improved to 9-1-1 and stayed unbeaten in Class 4A, Area 8 play. The Indians dropped to 6-11.

Westminster Christian out-shot New Hope 42-0 and got a hat trick from AnnaLi Weekley and 2 goals each from Annie Collier, Jasmine Feld and Shelby Layne. Clara Norris also scored a goal in the win.

The shutout was Westminster’s sixth of the season. The Wildcats are allowing 0.54 goals per match while scoring more than 4 per outing.

The Wildcats will host Madison Academy on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Westminster Christian beat No. 9 Priceville 2-1.

The Wildcats out-shot Priceville 47-10, getting goals from Weekley and Feld. Keeper Piper Blazier stopped 4 Priceville shots and Jamiah Maxtion saved 5.

Priceville came into the match averaging 4 goals per game. Freshman Anna Katherine Hopkins scored for the Bulldogs.

Priceville keeper Tori Staats stopped 32 shots on goal from the Wildcats, who came into the match averaging almost 5 goals per outing.

St. James 8, Opelika 1

The fifth-ranked Class 1A/3A Trojans rolled over 7A Opelika on the road on Wednesday, beating the Bulldogs on a rainy day.

Katie Brightwell led the way for St. James, pouring in 5 goals. Mary Grace Hixon scored twice and Natalie Barton added 1.

Seven different players had assists: Hope McCain with 2, Sana Shuford, Hixon, Barton, Hailey Vance, Ragan King and Brightwell.

Trinity 9, Prattville Christian 1

Class 4A No. 10 Trinity rolled past Prattville Christian on the road on Tuesday.

Avery Rogers scored Prattville Christian’s lone goal and Mary Virginia Penton had an assist.

Montgomery Academy 9, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 0

The Eagles blanked Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Thursday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

Gabby Barrera won at the No. 1 singles, beating Kam Browne 8-1 and teamed with Mae Mae Voltz to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-4 over Browne and Zoe Fuller.

In the rest of the singles matches, Voltz beat Fuller 8-3 at No. 2; Lola Campbell beat AK Lovelace 8-1 at No. 3; Marianna Lassner beat Ashley Chapman 8-0 at No. 4; Mary Surhea White beat Kenzie Johnston 8-1 at No. 5 and Alyssa Kaplan beat Addison Wyatt 8-5 at No. 6.

Campbell and White beat Lovelace/Chapman 8-6 at No. 2 doubles and Lassner/Kaplan beat Johnston/Wyatt 8-6 at No. 3.
