Spring sports roundup: Baldwin County’s Byrd records no-hitter
Sophomore Madilyn Byrd pitched a no-hitter over 5 innings as Baldwin County edged Dothan 1-0 on Saturday as the Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season in softball action. She did not walk a batter.
Ryann Wallace drove in the only run of the game in the first inning. She was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks for the Tigers. Madisyn Williams and Brooke McGowin also had hits in the win.
Jada Newman took the loss for Dothan, allowing 3 hits and 1 run over 4.2 innings. She struck out 4 and walked 5.
On Friday, Baldwin County doubled up Faith Academy, 6-3. Williams went 3-for-3 with a 2 RBIs to help Baldwin County top Faith on Friday. She also had 3 stolen bases on the day.
Wallace also singled in a run for the Tigers. Nizeria Riley also had an RBI single in the win and winning pitcher Payton Boyington had a pair of hits. Boyington gave up 3 runs – 1 earned – on 2 hits with a strikeout and 3 walks over 1.2 innings.
Also on Friday, Baldwin County beat Mobile Christian 4-2 in Daphne. Julianna Thompson struck out 4 and walked 2 over 4 innings to pick up the win.
Williams tripled for Baldwin County, Addisyn Hall had a double and Gabby Bidwell had a single.
Anna Claire Robbin took the loss for Mobile Christian, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits over 5 innings. She struck out 11 batters and walked 2.

Tuscaloosa County 2, Satsuma 0
The Wildcats blanked Satsuma on Saturday despite pitcher Belle Sheffield giving up no earned runs and striking out 8.
Jaiden Corlett had a pair of hits for Satsuma. Kaeden Enzor, Madison Sawyer and Sheffield also had hits in the loss.
Satsuma 2, Pell City 1
The Spartans edged Pell City on Saturday as Madison Sawyer picked up the win, allowing a run on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts.
Anna Jo Bonds had a 2-run home run in the win. Ella Howell singled for Satsuma.
On Friday, Satsuma beat Northside 6-0 at the Gena Firth Classic in Tuscaloosa. Sheffield was the winning pitcher, striking out 3 in five innings.
Ashley Parker and Madison Sawyer doubled for the winners and Kaeden Enzor had a single. Bonds had an RBI double and Bralee Byrd had a 2-run double. Ella Howell had an RBI single.
The Spartans also beat Hamilton 4-2 on Friday. Bonds struck out 8 to pick up the win, allowing a run on 4 hits. She also had a sacrifice RBI.
Enzor had a pair of hits and an RBI. Sheffield had an RBI double and Haley Jones drove in a run with a single.
On Thursday, Satsuma edged Gulf Shores 4-3. Sheffield earned the win with 3 innings of relief of Sawyer. Sheffield pitched shutout ball, striking out 2 with a walk. Sawyer struck out 6, giving up 2 runs in 4 innings.
Byrd had a triple and an RBI. Howell had a pair of hits with an RBI. Enzor also had an RBI in the win. Byrd tripled and Bonds had 2 hits. Pressley Willis and Jones also contributed hits.
Saraland 5, West Florida 2
The Spartans completed a 7-0 week with the win in the Jubilee Shootout, where they also defeated Robertsdale to claim the tournament title.
Saraland also beat Baldwin County twice, Leroy, Faith Academy and Mobile Christian.
Leadoff hitter Bre Hughes led the Spartans at the plate, batting .471 (8-for-17) with 4 doubles, a triple with 5 RBIs.
Olivia Ray went 8-for-19 with a home run, two doubles and 3 RBIs. Madison Croley went 8-for-19 with a double and 5 RBIs.
Myleigh Dobbins went 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA. She struck out 25 batters in 26 innings with 5 walks. She also recorded a safe for the Spartans.
Gracie Dees was 3-0 on the mound, pitching 14 innings.
Mobile Christian 8, Mary G. Montgomery 3
The Leopards finished 3-2 for the week with wins over Mary G. Montgomery, Theodore 4-0 and Faith Academy 5-2. Mobile Christian lost 4-2 to Baldwin County and 3-2 to Saraland.
Riley Dunnam hit .500 with 6 hits with a home run and 3 doubles. Camryn Lawson hit .444 with a homer and a triple with 4 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Hailey Padgett batted .429 with 6 hits, 5 runs scored and 8 stolen bases. Mia Neil produced a .417 average on the week.
Anna Claire Robin led Mobile Christian on the mound, registering a 1.59 ERA over 22 innings. She has faced 85 batters with 32 strikeouts, 10 hits and 8 runs.
Spanish Fort 14, Alma Bryant 2
Spanish Fort improved to 6-3 on the season with the win over Alma Bryant on Wednesday. The Toros finished with 11 hits, led by Haley Hart, who was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
Winning pitcher Kenzie Boullon went 3-for-4 at the plate. She gave up 2 earned runs on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings.
Kennedy Sevcik went 2-for-3 with a double in the win.
Spanish Fort lost 10-4 at Pace, Fla., on Tuesday. Boullon went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Hart had a 3-run homer and Ryleigh Stanford added a single.
Mallarie Beagle took the loss, allowing 4 earned run on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Ardmore 16, Decatur 1
The Tigers got a pair of home runs from Alaina Grace King in the home win over Decatur on Tuesday to open the season. King also had 5 RBIs on the day.
Aynslee Malone was 3-for-4 with a triple and two doubles.
Ardmore beat Scottsboro 6-0 and Sipsey Valley in the Patriot Classic at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa before losing 1-0 to Brookwood.
Malone led the team with a .556 average with two doubles and a triple. She scored 6 runs on the week. King batted .455 with 8 RBIs on 2 homers and a double.
Madison Academy 8, Meek 0
The Mustangs are 5-1 on the season after splitting a pair of games on Saturday, blanking Meek 8-0 and losing 3-0 to Priceville.
Madison Academy beat James Clemens 13-1 to open the season, then beat Brindlee Mountain 18-0, Meek 11-2 and Priceville 6-2.
Adair Allen is 6-for-11 on the season with 12 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Evie Stephenson is 8-for-12 with 9 runs scored and 9 RBIs. Memphis Houston is 9-for-15 with 10 runs and 7 RBI. Cat Schreiber is 6-for-15 with 3 runs and 11 RBIs. Emily Burgreen is 7-for-13 with 6 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Breelyn Kilpatrick is 4-for-12 with 3 runs and a pair of runs batted in.

Alexandria 11, Arab 2
The Valley Cubs handed Arab one of its three losses in five games this week.
Arab beat Oxford 7-4 and Etowah 5-4. The Knights lost 4-2 to Glencoe and 10-6 to Southside-Gadsden.
Lilly Livingston led Arab at the plate, going 8-for-13 in 15 plate appearances. She had 2 home runs, 3 doubles and 8 runs scored. She also had 3 RBIs and stole 2 bases.
Mattie Couch was 7-for-12 in 13 appearances with a homer, a triple, two doubles and 10 RBIs.

Thompson 12, Curry 0
The Warriors blanked Curry to win the championship of the Gena Fritch Classic in Tuscaloosa. Thompson is 8-0 on the season with wins over Springville (5-2), Demopolis (10-0), Hatton (10-0), Brookwood (4-0), Russellville (10-0), Fairhope (3-1) and Tuscaloosa County (15-1).
Dailynn Motes leads the team at the plate, hitting .652 (15-for-23) with 3 home runs, 2 doubles and 14 RBIs. Keara Hall is 12-for-21 with a homer, 3 triples, 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases. Kelsey Burden is 9-for-14 on the year with 2 doubles and 6 stolen bases.
Oak Mountain 6, Gardendale 3
Gardendale dropped to 2-3-1 on the season with the home loss on Tuesday.
The Rockets have beaten Brooks 3-2 and Chelsea 11-8 with losses to Sparkman (6-2) and Austin (20-15). Gardendale and Vestavia Hills tied 1-all.
Emerson Murrell is batting .500 with 7 runs scored for Gardendale. Kenley Vaughn has a .438 batting average. She has 3 home runs with 9 RBIs. Anna Valentine is batting .312 with a pair of home runs – including a grand slam – with 6 RBIs.
Tuscaloosa County 7, Calera 3
Calera finished 0-3 in tournament play at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa to drop to 4-8 on the seaon.
The Eagles also lost 8-4 to Austin and 12-9 to Lawrence County.
Calera was second in a tournament at Prattville, going 4-3 in the event with wins over Prattville Christian (10-0), Smiths Station (6-0), Auburn (4-0) and Prattville (4-2). In regular season play, Vestavia Hills beat Calera 7-3 and Helena 9-6.
Whitney Holtzpfel and Kate Townley are batting .500 for the Eagles. Holtzapfel has 4 home runs and 10 RBIs. Townley had a pair of homers with 9 RBIs. Lilly Townsend has 3 homers with 7 RBIs with a .400 batting average. Kinley Rodgers has 12 RBIs with a .325 average and Arymiya Shamburger is batting .300 with 4 RBI.

Maplesville 15, Montgomery Academy 5
Kaci Armistead went 3-for-3 at the plate in the loss at Maplesville on Tuesday. EK Casey and Rhianna Carstarphen were both 1-for-2.
EG Hines took the loss, striking out 3 in four innings.
Curry 6, Helena 1
The Yellow Jackets got a complete-game 1-hitter from Alena Howse in the semifinals of the Gena Fritch Classic in Tuscaloosa over the weekend. Curry lost 12-0 to Thompson in the championship game.
Lillie McGuff hit a grand slam for Curry (6-2) in the Helena game. Jenna Madison had a 2-run homer.
Also this season, Curry lost 3-2 to Hoover, beat West Point 11-1, beat Decatur 20-0, beat Northside 10-1, beat Austin 3-0 and beat Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 3-2.
Freshman Ansley Brown leads Curry with a .476 batting average and a .560 on-base percentage with 8 stolen bases. Skiely Perry is 3-1 on the mound with a no-hitter and 1-hitter to her credit. Howse is 3-0.
Against West Point, Brown was 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Shileigh Williams was 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBIs. Perry struck out 13 in 6 innings.
Ambrey Taylor had a double and 2 RBIs vs. Decatur. Lillie McGuff had a double and scored 3 runs.
Perry no-hit Austin, striking out 8 in 5 innings.

Hoover 3, Sparkman 0
The sixth-ranked Bucs improved to 7-1-1 on the season with the road win on Thursday.
Addie Bridges opened the scoring with an assist from Nneka Udeh in the first half. Udeh scored after halftime on an assist from Elise Marquardt and Kelly West scored on a header off a corner kick from Marquardt.
On Tuesday, Hoover got a pair of goals from Bridges on the way to a 4-1 home win over Chelsea. Julie Cooke and Marquardt also scored for the Bucs. Marquardt had an assist and Brooklyn Gernenz had 2 assists. Marquardt’s goal came on a penalty kick.

Montgomery Academy 2, Chelsea 1
Mary Elizabeth Cole delivered the game-winning goal with 3.7 seconds left in a home match against Class 7A Chelsea on Friday as fourth-ranked Montgomery Academy improved to 3-1-1 on the year.
The Eagles led 1-0 with Kerstin Daniel scoring four minutes into the match off an assists from Lauren Jones.
Chelsea tied the game with eight minutes left in the match.
Cole dribbled the ball down the field with 10 seconds remaining and made the game-winner in the top corner.

BASEBALL
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Westminster Christian 9, Austin 1
Westminster Christian scored 5 runs in the first inning en route to the win at Austin on Tuesday.
The Wildcats were led by senior Sean Lapinskes, who was 2-for-5 from the plate with two RBIs. He also closed out game on the mound with a perfect inning – striking out all three batters he faced.
Senior Riley Friend was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs on a triple in the first that pushed the visitors to an early 4-0 lead.
Westminster scored 3 runs in the sixth after a single from Jackson Lange, a sacrifice from Trey Perkins and a single by Lapinskes to drive in Lange. Friend followed with another triple that drove in Lapinskes and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice to give Westminster a commanding 8-0 lead.
Austin got a run in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Judd Bailey that drove in Easton Palmer.
Lange started the game for the Wildcats giving up only 2 hits, no runs and struck out 6. Joshua Goode relieved Lange in the fourth, pitching 3 innings with 1 run on a hit. He struck out 7.
Westminster opened the season with an 11-6 win at Huntsville. Friend went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lange went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs.
The Wildcats used a pitcher for each inning and Lapinskes hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Steven Cavaco went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Huntsville.

Madison County 12, Brewer 1
The Tigers whipped Brewer on the road on Saturday to improve to 3-1 on the season. Four Madison County pitchers combined on a 4-hitter with Cole Mullins earning the win. Mullins struck out 3 and allowed 1 hit in 2 innings.
Nicholas Sharp, Riley Tipton and Keigan McClure pitched an inning apiece with Sharp striking out 2 and allowing 1 hit. Tipton gave up 2 hits and Brewer’s lone run. McClure struck out 1 and walked 1.
Mullins also went 2-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBIs. Memphis Scott was 1-for-2 with a home run while Jake Thornton and Connor Drake both doubled and were 2-for-3.
The Tigers stole 12 bases, with Ayden Deerman stealing 4 with Drake and Braden Reed stealing 2 each.
Cole Drinkard gave up 6 runs on 9 hits over 3 innings to take the loss for the Patriots. He struck out 2 and walked 3.
Russell Mahan was 2-for-2 for Brewer with an RBI. Logan Powers was 1-for-3 with a double and Marc Rychetsky went 1-for-3.
On Tuesday, Madison County shut out Scottsboro 3-0 at home, striking for a run in the first and second innings and adding another in the sixth.
Scott led the Tigers at the plate with a double and a single in two at-bats. Sharp, Christopher Fearnside and Brody Moon were all 1-for-2 with Moon driving in a run. Drake also had an RBI.
Jace Duckett earned the win, striking out 9 while allowing 3 hits in 6.1 innings. Jake Thornton struck out the final two batters of the day.
Jackson Nichols took the loss for Scottsboro, allowing 2 runs – 1 earned – on 1 hit. He struck out 2 and walked 4.
Andruw Smith doubled and Trent Wilson and Thomas Stewart had singles for the Wildcats.
West Limestone 8, Madison County 2
The Wildcats pushed 5 runs across in the top of the fifth inning to rally from a 2-1 deficit on the way to the win at Madison County on Monday.
West Limestone shortstop Cade Carpenter went 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored. Jaron Meredith went 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs. Braxton Griffin was also 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Colten Lewter was 2-for-3.
Weston Owens picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief of Griffin. Owens struck out 4 and did not allow a hit. Griffin gave up 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks over 4.1 innings.
Riley Tipton took the loss for Madison County in relief of Nicholas Sharp.
Memphis Scott tripled and Sharp drove in a run for the Tigers.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats whipped Lindsay Lane 14-3 as Trent Thornton struck out 7 batters in 4 innings and delivered 3 RBIs in a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Carpenter went 2-for-5 with a double and Payton Ridgeway was 1-for-1 in the win.
East Limestone 17-10, Lawrence County 14-9
The Indians picked up a pair of wins at home on Saturday over Lawrence County.
In Game 1, East Limestone got home runs from Leyton Coffman and Roman Schrimsher. Coffman got a pair of RBIs while Schrimsher had 3 RBIs for his 3-for-4 performance. Garrett Ritter and Bay Scott had a pair of hits in the win.
Jacob Brooks struck out 5 batters in 2.2 innings pitched.
In the second game, Chris Fitts had a pair of hits with an RBI. He also stole 3 bases. Coffman and Cade Parham both had a hit with an RBI.
Charlie Eslick pitched 3 innings with 4 strikeouts. Micah Montgomery struck out 3 in 2.1 innings.
Elkmont 11, West Limestone 10 (8 innings)
The Red Devils earned the win at home on Thursday.
Weston Owens went 3-for-3 for West Limestone and Hayden Hill was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Warriors picked up the win at home on Friday.
Cade Carpenter went 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs for West Limestone. Braxton Griffin was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and Hayden Hill was 2-for-2.

Pleasant Grove 13-12, Tarrant 3-2
The Spartans improved to 4-2 on the year with a double-header sweep of Tarrant on Saturday.
Pleasant Grove has also beaten Midfield 16-1 and Fultondale 24-1. The Spartans lost 16-3 to Clay-Chalkville.
Daylon Parks is batting .750 with 6 hits last week with 4 RBIs and 6 runs scored. Anthony Thompson hit .714 with 5 hits, 3 RBIs and 13 runs scored. John Fletcher batted .600 with 6 hits, 7 RBIs and 7 runs.
Parks struck out 10 in 5 innings, allowing 1 run. Caleb Rose struck out 5 in 3 innings with 1 run scored.
Hewitt-Trussville 6, James Clemens 5
The Huskies edged James Clemens on Monday at home and are 2-2 on the season.
Hewitt-Trussville also beat St. Paul’s of Covington, La., 10-2, and lost 5-3 to Dutchtown of Geismar, La., and 6-4 to St. Amant, La.
Brett Moseley went 6-for-14 at the plate for the week with a triple, a double and 4 RBIs. Carson Wideman was 6-for-16 with a triple and 2 RBIs. Cooper Huffman went 5-for-13 and Cam Simpson was 5-for-11.
Christian Helmer allowed 1 earned run and struck out 10 in 6 innings vs. St. Paul’s.
Ashville 17, Ider 2
The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 with a pair of wins on Saturday, beating Ider and Southeastern 12-4.
Senior Parker Cross leads Ashville at the plate with a 7-for-12 performance thus far. He has scored 4 runs and has 6 RBIs. Senior Drew Layfield is 6-for-11 with 8 RBIs and 6 runs scored. Dylan Palmer, a sophomore, is 4-for-9 with 3 RBIs and freshman Easton Layfield is 6-for-11 with 4 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.
Drew Layfield has given up 1 unearned run in 9 innings on 7 hits, 16 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Homewood 11, Pelham 10
The Patriots went 3-2 last week with wins over Pelham, Cullman 6-2 and Opelika 10-0. Homewood lost 5-1 to Opelika and 12-2 to Opelika.
Junior Jack Ross went 2-0 on the mount, pitching 9.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, striking out 11, walking 1 and giving up 2 earned runs. He was 4-for-11 with 3 home runs, a double, 5 runs scored an 11 RBIs. Ross had the game-winning home run against Pelham in the top of the seventh inning. He also had a grand slam in the win over Opelika that he also won on the mound, pitching 5 innings with 2 hits, a walk and no runs. He threw 53 pitches, 43 for strikes.
Oak Grove 9, Mortimer Jordan 4
The Blue Devils lost a pair of games on Saturday, at a neutral site to Oak Grove and 7-2 on the road to Corner to drop to 3-2 overall this season.
Mortimer Jordan beat Oak Grove 15-0 on the road and Leed 10-2 at a neutral site. The Blue Devils also whipped Shades Valley 18-4 at home.
Thus far, Braylon Disko, Trayten Overton and Coleman Maldonado lead the team with .500 batting averages. John Owen Dean and Tucker Rickman are both 6-for-16 (.375) on the year. Rickman has 8 RBIs to lead the team, followed by Isaiah Brown with 7. Brown and Disko both have doubled.
Jeremiah Tingle and Garrett Ames are 2-2 on the season. Ames is carrying a 0.00 ERA while Tingle’s is 2.25. Dean, Zac Burns and Greyson Gooch are 2-0 while Terence Gaines, Bryce Funderburk and Hunter Horsley are 1-0.
Gardendale 9, Hazel Green 6
The Rockets won a pair of games on Saturday with the win over Hazel Green and a 14-1 rout of Austin. Gardendale is 4-2 on the season.
Caiden Combs went 3-for-3 in the win over Hazel Green with 4 RBIs. He also gave up 3 unearned runs on 1 hit in 4 innings pitched with 3 strikeouts.
Against Austin, Combs was 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBIs. Ty McGraw homered and doubled and finished with 3 RBIs. Cody Florence was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Logan Fitzgerald gave up a run on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts in 3 innings. Peyton Willett pitched 2 innings with no hits or runs and a strikeout.
In the loss to Thompson, Cooper Jarvis was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Jackson Firestone went 2-for-4. Ty McGraw went 4 innings, allowing 3 hits and 3 runs – 2 earned – with 5 strikeouts.

Baker 11, Pascagoula, Miss. 2
Bryant Durbin struck out 6 and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits over 4 innings as the Hornets topped Pascagoula. Durbin also went 2-for-5 with an RBI at the plate for Baker.
Ethan Santos went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Camden Payne was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Spencer Stewart walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored 3 runs. Freshman Tate Graham went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
On Wednesday, Baker whipped Elberta 19-0. Connor Gatwood, an Auburn commitment, picked up the win, striking out 6 with no runs and no hits over 3.2 innings.
Micah Cornelius went 3-for-3 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Stewart was 2-for-2 with 4 runs, an RBI and was hit by pitch twice. Graham and Bryson Sudduth both doubled in the win and had RBIs. Peyton Buck walked three times and had an RBI.
On Tuesday, Baker beat Ocean Springs, Miss., 7-5 with Sudduth earning the win with 6 strikeouts, allowing 2 runs – neither earned – on 2 hits. Gatwood went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Santos was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Montgomery Academy 4, Thorsby 1
The Eagles improved to 2-1 on the year with the road win at Thorsby on Friday.
Senior Will Hardin struck out 8 Thorsby batters, allowing a run on 4 hits over six innings. Junior Oscar Fiore closed out the win, striking out 3 and giving up a hit.
Parker Cook and Luke Jones led Montgomery Academy at the plate with a pair of hits apiece. Cook had 2 RBIs. Andrew Hosein had a lead-off triple in the top of the sixth inning and Reid McBride drove him in with a single to put the visitors up 2-1. Cook’s 2-RBI single pushed the lead to 4-1.
Montgomery Academy edged Brewbaker Tech 7-6 on Wednesday at home. John Allen Jones smacked a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for the Eagles.
The visitors led 6-5 after an RBI single in the top of the extra inning before Montgomery Academy tied it on a bases-loaded walk to Will Hardin.
John Allen Jones also had an RBI single in the win and Hosein drove in a run with a double. Hardin also had a sac fly.
Starter Ware McCollum struck out 11 for Montgomery Academy, allowing no runs on 2 hits. Eighth-grader Reid McBride earned the win, striking out 5 and allowing 3 runs – 2 earned – on 5 hits over 3 innings.

John Alford, Jackson Brown, Ford Morano, Anton Yang, Duncan McInnes and Ron Sharma won the singles matches.
Alford/Brown, Yang/Mason Kin and Bo Johnston/Liam Baker won the doubles matches for Montgomery Academy.
