Spring sports roundup: Baker baseball blanks Mary Montgomery
Bryant Durbin pitched a complete game Thursday night as No. 5 Baker opened a key Class 7A, Area 1 series with a 4-0 win at rival Mary G. Montgomery in Semmes. Durbin allowed 2 hits in 7 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 2.
Cody Strickhausen allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in a complete-game effort for the Vikings.
Baker third baseman Camden Payne drove in two runs and Auburn University commitment Connor Gatwood also had an RBI.
Justin Friend and Brody Tuinder had the Vikings’ hits.
The Hornets improved to 22-4 on the year while Mary Montgomery fell to 19-7.
The three-game series continues on Friday at Baker.

John Henry Winstead’s 4-hit day led the Toros in their win over McGill-Toolen on The Hill.
Nemo Hixon was 3-for-3 with a double. Grant Howard added 2 doubles and Newton Gardner had 2 hits with a double in the win.
Ethan Kick picked up the win on the mound and pushed his record to 4-0.
Bayside Academy 4, Gulf Shores 2
Bayside held off Gulf Shores in a battle of top 10 teams played at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola on Thursday.
Gulf Shores (23-9) is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. Bayside (19-6) is No. 2 in 4A.
Noah Cain, Gatlin Pitts, Cole Dean and Weston Hannaman all drove in runs for the Admirals. Tait Moore went 3-for-3.
Carson Joyner, Teague Broadhead and Dean each pitched 2 innings. Pitts pitched the final inning.
Joseph Stephens went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Dolphins. Jackson Beck had 2 hits.
Faith Academy 19, Murphy 4
Class 6A No. 4 Faith Academy scored 6 runs in the first inning and didn’t look back in an Area 1 series-opening rout of Murphy.
The Rams added a single run in the second, 4 in the third and 8 in the fourth to win in 5 innings.
Eli Driskell struck out 10 and didn’t allow a hit in 3.1 innings to get the win. Sorin Stallworth took the loss for Murphy.
Faith’s Gavin Prewitt was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Keith Ceasor and Bryce Turner drove in 2 runs each.
Faith finished with 11 hits to Murphy’s 1. The Panthers committed 7 errors. Bobby Lewis had the Panthers’ only hit.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Huntsville 1, Sparkman 0 (9 innings)
Chase Cartron drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and pitched 7 shutout innings as the Crimson Panthers beat visiting Sparkman on Monday in Class 7A, Area 7 play.
Huntsville improved to 17-13 on the season and 3-0 in Class 7A, Area 7 play. Ninth-ranked Sparkman is 23-8 and 1-3 in the area. The teams will close out the area double-header on Friday at Sparkman.
Cartron’s RBI single was one of his 2 hits in 4 at-bats. He gave up 2 hits, struck out 6 Senators and walked 4 before giving way to Sims Bowman, who struck out 2 and walked 1 in 2 hitless innings to get the win.
Wyatt Howell went 2-for-3 for Huntsville and Steven Cavaco and Will Carter both had singles in the win.
Richard Freiholtz was saddled with the loss for No. 9 Sparkman in an inning in relief of starter Brenner VanDeWynckel, who struck out 11 Panthers and walked 1 in a sterling effort. VanDeWynckel allowed 3 hits in 7 shutout innings. Freiholtz gave up an earned run on 3 hits with a walk.
Ryan Everly and Amaree Jabbar had singles for Sparkman.
Madison Academy 9, Huntsville 7
The Mustangs scored in the first 5 innings to hold off Huntsville at home. Madison Academy led 3-2 after one inning, 5-2 after two and trailed 7-6 after three. The Mustangs scored a run in the fourth and 2 in the fifth.
Brayden Gardner went 1-for-3 with a triple for Madison Academy and had 4 RBIs with a run scored. Starting pitcher Shane Duke drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice. Myles Johnson was 1-for-3 and Davis Parker was 1-for-2 with both scoring a run and driving in a run.
Keaton Watson got the win in relief of Duke. Watson pitched 4 scoreless innings, allowing a hit with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Duke went 3 innings, giving up 7 earned runs on 9 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Huntsville used five pitchers on the day with none throwing more than 1.2 innings.
Chase Cartron went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 runs scored for the Panthers. Wyatt Howell was 2-for-3 with 2 runs, Landon Scott was 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Jacks McClung was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
Athens Bible 2, Skyline 1 (10 innings)
The Trojans slipped past Skyline in 10 innings at home on Monday in a Class 1A, Area 15 contest as Luke Murrell and Ethan Johnson combined to pitch a 1-hitter. Murrell struck out 14 in 6.2 innings, allowing a hit and a run with a walk. Johnson worked 3.1 innings and struck out 4 with a walk.
Murrell, a freshman left-hander for Athens Bible, helped his cause at the plate with 4 singles, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Johnson singled and stole a base.
Grant Ogles had a pair of singles and a stolen base. Ryan Faust, Gavin Butler and Sam Hall all had singles for the Trojans (9-11).
The two teams meet again on Friday at Skyline.
BIRMINGHAM
Hewitt-Trussville 10, Spain Park 7
The third-ranked Huskies topped No. 8 Spain Park on Thursday at home in a Class 7A, Area 6 contest. Cooper Huffman earned the win on the mound.
University of Tennessee commitment Steele Hall had a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs for Hewitt-Trussville. Brett Moseley had a single and an RBI, Christian Helmers had 2 hits and an RBI and Rob Wright drove in a pair of runs with a single. Drew Ollis and Sam Scarborough had an RBI apiece. Colby Durden and Carson Wideman also had hits in the win.

Central-Phenix City 11, Auburn 5
Top-ranked Central-Phenix City improved to 29-1 with a home win in the opening game of a 3-game Class 7A, Area 4 set against the rival Tigers.
Landon Beaver went 3-for-3 with a triple, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Cason Page and Sam Brown drove in 2 runs apiece for the Red Devils.
Cam Norton pitched the first 5 innings, allowing an earned run on 6 hits. Logan Clark and Brantley Rothrock pitched an inning each.
Seth Payne had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for No. 6 Auburn (19-9). Henry Allen was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The series resumes later today with a double-header in Auburn.
SOCCER
BIRMINGHAM
Hoover 7, Tuscaloosa County 0
The Bucs blanked Tuscaloosa County on the road on Thursday in a Class 7A, Area 5 contest. Hoover raced to a 4-0 lead in the first half and coasted to the win.
Patrick Anderson scored a hat trick for the Bucs, with a pair of first-half goals on headers – both on assists from Matthew Kincaid. Kincaid finished with 4 assists on the night. Benjamin Bruns scored the opening goal off a corner kick from Anderson and Jose Castaneda scored the fourth goal of the half on an assist from Henry Patterson.
In the second half, Hoover also got goals from Justin Diaz Rodriguez and on a cross from Patterson to Reese Kearney. Patterson had 2 assists in the win.
Sawyer Houlditch and Jackson Wetherholt each played a half in goal in the shutout.
The Bucs will host No. 1 Oak Mountain on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, Hoover rallied in the second half to top Thompson 2-1 on the road in another Area 5 game. The Bucs’ Conrad Hernandez tied the game with about 9 minutes remaining as Anderson passed to Patterson who crossed to Hernandez for the goal. Anderson booted in the game-winner on a foul kick with 8 minutes to play.

Pike Road 5, Prattville Christian 2
Pike Road rolled to a victory on the road on Tuesday.
Cade Segars scored both of Prattville Christian’s goals in the loss. Brady Roberson had an assist for the Panthers.
TENNIS
Montgomery Academy 9, Enterprise 0
The Eagles won a pair of tennis matches on Tuesday, sweeping Enterprise in a match that was completed on Tuesday at O’Connor Tennis Center after a Monday rain delay. Montgomery Academy improved to 11-3 on the year with the wins.
John Alford, Jackson Brown, Edwin Wu, Ford Morano, Anton Yang and Duncan McInnes won their singles matches for MA. The teams of Alford/Brown, Ron Sharma/Morano and Yang/Bo Johnston took the doubles matches for the Eagles.
Also on Tuesday, Montgomery Academy beat Trinity 6-3 in a match played at MA’s McLemore Tennis Center.
Wu, Morano, Yang and McInnes won singles matches with Sharma/Morano and Yang/Johnston taking doubles wins.
Trinity winners were Samuel Treadwell and James Treadwell in singles and together for a doubles victory.
MA will play in the Class 7A, Section 2 tournament on Monday at Montgomery’s O’Connor Tennis Center.

Center Point wins Magic City High School Invitational
The host team won the Magic City High School Invitational meet on Tuesday, outscoring Clay-Chalkville 168.5 to 119.3 in the 19-team event. McAdory was third at 62.5.
Ramsay finished fourth with 48 points, followed by Oneonta (38), Jackson-Olin (37), Francis Marion (28), Woodlawn (21), Mortimer Jordan (20), Hueytown (19.5), Fairfield (19.3), Minor (19), Greensboro (14.83), Pleasant Grove (12), Aliceville (11), Wenonah (10), Carver-Birmingham (9), Bibb County (3) and Pickens County (3).
Jeremiah Franklin of Center Point won the 100-meter dash in 11.27, followed by Pernell Stewart of Center Point (11.33) and Josh Douthard of Clay-Chalkville (11.38). Roderick Alexander of Clay-Chalkville won the 200-meter dash in 22.24, followed by Aydden Moody of Jackson-Olin (22.94) and Center Point’s Stewart (22.94).
Alexander won the 400-meter dash in 51.26, ahead of teammate Jarmarqus Jones in 51.83. Fairfield’s Jelani Miller was third at 52.53. McAdory’s Kenneth John Alonso won the 800-meter run in 2:00.52, followed by Center Point teammates Joshua McDaniel (2:07.27) and Danson Ngigi (2:11.96). Lee Smith of Clay-Chalkville won the 1600 in 5:12.81, followed by Oneonta’s John-Wendall Brooks (5:18.54) and Pleasant Grove’s Christian Robinson (5:29.52).
Clay’s Smith won the 3200-meter run in 12:01.29. Jihad Muhammad of Center Point was second in 12:56.25, followed by Jackson-Olin’s Jordan Johnson (14:03.08).
Jaileb Ballard of Center Point won the 110-meter hurdles at 15.11, followed by McAdory’s Jordon Ross (15.73) and Ramsay’s Kameron Keenan (15.80). Ballard also won the 300 hurdles in 41.64, followed by teammate Demarco Allen (41.93) and Hueytown’s JuQuarious Brooks (42.29).
Clay-Chalkville took the 4×100-meter relay in 42.34 with Center Point in second at 42.86 and Ramsay third at 43.54. Center Point won the 4×400 relay in 3:32.11 with Woodlawn in second at 3:33.97 and Clay third at 3:40.26. Center Point took the 4×800 relay in 8:59.90 with Woodlawn second at 9:18.28 and Clay-Chalkville in third at 9:19.91.
McAdory’s Tristan Gilmore won the high jump at 6-00.00, followed by Jakobi Arnold of Minor at 5-10.00 and Fairfield’s Jelani Miller at 5-08.00. Mekhi Brown of Center Point won the long jump in 19-08.50, followed by Aliceville’s Quintarius Bonner (19-06.00) and Dominque Bruce of Wenonah (19-05.00). Brown also took the triple jump at 41-09.00, followed by Ramsay’s Shiye Rice (41-01.00) and McAdory’s Tray Baker (40-11.00).
Johnny Hudson of Francis Marion won the shot put at 46-06.00, followed by Jeremiah Hayes of Center Point (43-03.00) and Fairfield’s Jordan Reed (41-11.00). Evin Harris of Clay-Chalkville won the discus throw at 127-01, followed by Center Point teammates Malik Brown (124-11) and Hayes (118-05).
Oneonta’s Mason Bailey won the javelin throw at 134-05, followed by Greensboro’s Kalix Smith (121-07) and Christopher Lewis of Ramsay (116-07).

SOFTBALL
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
Columbia 4, Clements 3 (9 innings)
Emma Newby struck out 18 batters as the Eagles beat Clements on the road on Monday. The junior gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run in 9 innings.
Newby has struck out 98 of the 216 batters she’s faced this season – 45.4 percent – in 47.1 innings with 17 walks.
Columbia scored its first run in the eighth inning, pushing a run across on a dropped third strike. After Clements tied the game in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles scored a pair in the ninth on RBIs by La’Terrica Wright and Jessinia Rocha.
Clements starter Peyten Burks struck out 12, allowing no runs on 2 hits in 7 innings.
Piedmont 25, Saks 4
Sixth-ranked Piedmont rolled over homestanding Saks on Monday, exploding for 15 runs in the top of the first in a 4-inning Class 3A, Area 10 game.
The Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of 10 walks. Jaycee Glover went 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Cacey Brothers, Carson Young and Ava Pope drove in 3 runs each in the win. Brothers was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Young went 1-for-4 with a run and Pope was 2-for-2 with 4 runs.
Eliza Mathis was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored and Cayla Brothers was 2-for-3 with an RBI and 4 runs.
Young got the win in the circle, allowing no runs on 2 hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2 innings. Callie Faulkner gave up 4 earned runs on 5 hits with a strikeout.
The Bulldogs got doubles from Young and Cayla Brothers.
Miani Burton took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing all of Piedmont’s runs – 14 earned – on 14 hits with 2 strikeouts. She was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a run scored.
Ashlynn Twymon went 2-for-2 with a pair of triples with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Adrianna Stevens, Liv Wells and Ava Snead also had hits for Saks.
North Jackson 9, New Hope 5
The 10th-ranked Chiefs used a 5-run fourth inning to pull away from New Hope on the road on Monday in a Class 4A, Area 14 game. North Jackson led 2-1 after an inning, 3-1 after the second and 8-2 after the fourth.
North Jackson finished with 8 hits while allowing 9 and overcame 5 errors while the Indians had 3.
Avery Wynne went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, 2 RBIs and a run scored for North Jackson. Kinley Burton was 2-for-4 with a double, a pair of RBIs and a run. Peyton Malley was 1-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run. Allie Benson was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Milee Grider went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Darcy McClendon picked up the win in the circle, allowing 5 runs – 2 earned – on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks over 7 innings.
Ellah McCollum was 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs for New Hope. Olivia Harris was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs and Haley Garrison drove in a run on a 2-for-4 day with a double and a run scored.
Ella Baswell, who doubled in 4 at-bats, took the loss for the Indians. She gave up 8 earned runs on 7 hits with 4 strikeouts and 6 walks in 3.2 innings. Harris struck out 3 and walked 1 with an earned run on 1 hit in 3.1 innings in relief.

Thomasville 5, Excel 1
The Tigers clinched the Class 3A, Area 4 regular-season title with the win at Excel on Thursday. Zion Howard struck out 8 with no earned runs and a walk over 7 innings to earn the win.
Mardie Carpenter, Ryleigh McConnell and Denaijah Scott were all 1-for-3 with an RBI each for the winners.

Prattville Christian 2, Montgomery Catholic 0
The Panthers blanked Montgomery Catholic on the road on Thursday, pushing Prattville Christian’s season record to 13-3.
Laura Beth NeSmith shut out the Knights on 1 hit with 10 strikeouts.
Peyton Thrash drove in a run for PCA. Chloe Hollon had a sacrifice fly RBI and Sara Payton Schmidt added a single.
On Tuesday, Prattville Christian whipped Stanhope Elmore 16-0 in a 4-inning game. Alivia Messick struck out 7 in 3 innings for the Panthers, giving up a hit. NeSmith closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts.
Kandice Crosby went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs with 3 RBIs for the Panthers. Hollon had a solo home run and 3 RBIs, Payson Hanson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Schmidt and Erin Williams both had a pair of RBIs.

Hoover 3, Vestavia Hills 0
Third-ranked Hoover blanked rival Vestavia Hills on Tuesday, scoring a pair of goals in the first half to improve to 3-1 in Class 7A, Area 5 play.
Abby Leader got the Bucs’ first goal and Elise Marquardt added a penalty kick in the opening half. Marquardt added another goal with 9 minutes remaining to give Hoover (15-3-2) the final margin.
Keeper Lane Morton took advantage of Hoover’s tough defense to record the clean sheet.

Montgomery Academy 2, St. James 1
Montgomery Academy’s Sophia Cho booted the ball into the top corner with 1 second left to hand second-ranked Class 1A/3A St. James its first loss of the season on the road on Tuesday. The Eagles, No. 3 in Class 6A, improved to 9-1-1 while the Trojans are 8-1-1.
Madison Yi scored Montgomery Academy’s first goal and the game was tied at 1 with 30 seconds remaining before Cho took a strike with her weaker foot and made the game-winner.

Montgomery Academy closed out its dual match season on Tuesday with a 10-5 record after a pair of 9-0 wins, besting local rival Trinity and section opponent Enterprise.
In the win over Trinity, Gabby Barrera beat Aniston Skipworth 8-0 in No. 1 singles. Mae Mae Voltz beat Kingsley Johns 8-1 at No. 2, Lola Campbell beat Kensley Williamson 8-1 at No. 3, Marianna Lassner beat Nora B. Grayson 8-2 at No. 4, Mary Surhea White beat Henlee Gunter 8-1 at No. 5 and Alyssa Kaplan beat Maggie Seymore 8-3 at No. 6.
Barrera/Voltz topped Skipworth/Johns 8-1 in No. 1 doubles. Campbell/White beat Williamson/Emma McDaniel 8-1 at No. 2 and Lassner/Kaplan beat Gunter/Grayson 8-6 at No. 3.
Against Enterprise, Barrera beat Riley Stewart 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. Volz blanked Hazel Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Campbell beat McKenzie Tate 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Lassner beat Arin Lett 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, White beat Emma Gann 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Kaplan beat Raedyn Weems 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
Barrera/Voltz defeated Stewart/Johnson at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-0. Campbell/White topped Tate/Lett 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Lassner/Kaplan beat Gann/Weems 6-1, 6-0.
Montgomery Academy will begin play in the sectional tournament on Tuesday at O’Connor Park.

Center Point wins Magic City High School Invitational
Host team Center Point won the 16-team Magic City High School Invitational on Tuesday, scoring 109 points to 95 for second-place Minor.
Clay-Chalkville was third with 85 points, followed by Pleasant Grove (80), McAdory (78), Francis Marion (53), Oneonta (29), Mortimer Jordan (27), Bibb County (26), Jackson-Olin (24), Carver-Birmingham (7), Wenonah (4), Pickens County (2), Greensboro (2), Ramsay (2) and Aliceville (2).
Mahognay Shipp of Minor won the 100-meter dash in 12.64 with McAdory’s Adaysya Woodson finishing second in 12.69 and Marika Gray of Jackson-Olin third in 12.83. Cayson Jordan of Pleasant Grove won the 200-meter dash in 26.14, just ahead of Shipp’s 26.15. Kamya Jackson of Carver was third at 26.52. Jordan also took the 400 meters in 1:00.34 with teammate Jazmyn McKinnon in second at 1:04.39. Center Point’s Makalah Fyffe was third in 1:05.14.
Shelby Brown of Mortimer Jordan won the 800-meter run in 2:40.17, followed by Elissia Acoff of McAdory at 2:47.37 and Pleasant Grove’s Kaylin Caldwell (2:49.32). Brown also won the 1600 in 6:12.74, followed by Oneonta’s Ellie Gehri (6:22.42) and Acoff (6:58.13).
Gehri won the 3200 in 14:17.29 over McAdory’s Jarethzy Alonso’s 15:00.59.
Jada Strait of McAdory won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.42. Center Point’s Nakia Howard was second in 16.47 with Clay-Chalkville’s Nataliya Johnson in third at 17.90. Angel Jimerson of Center Point won the 300-meter hurdles in 49.02, followed by Francis Marion’s Zy’Tashia Moore (51.13) and Clay’s Johnson (52.12).
Pleasant Grove won the 4×100-meter relay in 48.93, followed by Minor (50.28) and McAdory (50.41). Center Point won the 4×400 in 4:24.61, followed by McAdory in 4:31.06 and Francis Marion in 4:36.36. Center Point also won the 4×800 in 11:47.96 ahead of Pleasant Grove (12.06.69) and Clay-Chalkville (12:11.56).
Tynesha Adams of Minor and Amaya Wagner of Center Point tied for the high jump at 4-08.00, followed by Brooke Adams of Minor at 4-06.00. Keri Edwards of Clay won the long jump at 16-05.75, followed by teammate Nataliya Johnson (15-03.25) and Center Point’s Ramiya Taylor (15-01.25).
Clay’s Edwards won the triple jump in 35-00.75 with Francis Marion’s Tracianna Moore second at 31-10.00. Brijourne Williams finished third at 31-09.50.
Ava Cameron of Minor won the shot put at 35-00.00, followed by Leila McWillie of Clay-Chalkville at 34-07.00 and LaChelsea Moore of Francis Marion at 34-07.00. Jackson-Olin’s Abriel Dickinson won the discus throw at 81-08 with Minor’s Cameron finishing second at 77-11. Bibb County’s Te’Niya Cash was third at 76-07. Clay’s McWillie won the javelin throw at 96-00 followed by Cameron of Minor at 84-09 and Moore of Francis Marion at 82-06.
