Spring sports roundup: Athens Bible lefty K’s 15 in perfect game

Athens Bible freshman left-hander Luke Murrell snapped the Trojans’ four-game losing streak in dominating fashion on Monday. Murrell, the son of head coach Brad Murrell and grandson of Athens Bible legendary coach Bill Murrell who retired with 910 wins in 2023, pitched a 5-inning perfect game – striking out all 15 batters he faced in a 13-0 win at Shoals Christian.

Murrell, who has played varsity baseball since he was a seventh-grader, threw 67 pitches with 47 strikes. He also had a pair of singles with 2 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

Athens Bible (2-4) pounded out 15 hits and stole 10 bases on the day.

Senior Ethan Johnson came up just a home run short of hitting for the cycle for Athens Bible. He drove in 4 runs and stole 3 bases with his triple, double and single.

Freshmen Ethan Barnes and Gavin Butler both had a double, single, RBI and a stolen base. Junior Nathan Skipworth had a pair of singles with an RBI and a steal. Eighth-grader Weston Todd had a double and single.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Westminster Christian 11-6, New Hope 4-11

The Wildcats and Indians split a Class 4A Area 13 double-header at New Hope on Thursday. Westminster Christian is 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in area play. With the first win, the Wildcats got off to their best start since opening at 5-1 in 2013.

New Hope is 4-7, 1-2 after the opening area series.

In Game 1, the Wildcats benefitted from 7 New Hope errors that led to 5 unearned runs. Westminster Christian did not commit any errors in the game.

Amos Baldwin went 3-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Jackson Lange was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Josh Goode earned the win, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings. He struck out 1 and walked 4 New Hope batters.

The visitors raced to a 9-1 lead over the first three innings, adding 2 in the seventh.

Sean Lapinskes gave up no runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts over the final 2 innings.

In Game 2, New Hope scored 6 runs to overcome a 6-4 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brett Beckwith got the win for the Indians, pitching the final 4 innings in relief of John Arnold. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and struck out 3.

Charlie Harbin led New Hope at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

On Monday, the Wildcats beat New Hope 5-1 at home to open the area series. Westminster pounded out 11 hits and Lange held New Hope to a pair of hits. Lange went the distance, giving up 1 run with 6 strikeouts. He also smacked a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Shortstop Lapinskes went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the win.

New Hope managed 4 baserunners in the loss.

Madison County 2, Hazel Green 1

The Tigers improved to 10-1 on the season with the road win on Thursday as Jake Thornton struck out 12 Hazel Green batters. Thornton got the complete-game win, allowing an earned run on 4 hits with a walk.

Madison County got both runs in the top of the fourth inning on RBIs from designated hitter Brody Moon and catcher Cole Mullins.

Memphis Scott had a double with Christopher Fearnside, Mullins and Nick Broadbent contributing singles.

Tarpley Priest was saddled with the loss for Hazel Green (4-8). He allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with a pair of strikeouts and 3 walks. Jackson Hunter struck out 7 in 3.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs or hits. He walked 2.

Andrew Beaverson doubled with Colton Clark, Bryce Zimmerman and Jaden Charles adding singles for the Trojans.

Sparkman 6, Madison Academy 5

The Senators earned their third walk-off win of the season with the ninth-inning victory at home on Thursday. Ryan Everly drove in the game-winner for Sparkman.

Everly led Sparkman at the plate, going 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs.

Cole Darby picked up the win in relief with 4.2 shutout innings. He struck out 4 and gave up 2 hits.

Priceville 5, Lawrence County 2

The Bulldogs improved to 5-4 on the year with the road win on Thursday. Priceville gave up a pair of unearned runs in the first and scored 3 runs with 1 out in the top of the seventh after a 12-pitch walk by Tatum Sivley.

Colman Gann pitched 4 innings, allowing no earned runs on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts over 4 innings. Tyde Borden (2-1) got the win with 3 innings pitched, allowing 1 hit while striking out 4.

Deacon Hall had a solo home run while Borden, Jake England, Jon Walker and Kane Dunn all singled.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Spanish Fort 13, Daphne 7

Brayden Cooper’s 4 hits and 3 RBIs led the Toros past Daphne on the road on Wednesday.

John Henry Winstead got the win, allowing no earned runs with 3 strikeouts. He also had a pair of hits to support his work on the mound. Jacob James picked up a save, pitching the last 2.2 innings.

Hayes Miller had 3 RBIs in the win.

STATEWIDE

Andalusia 2, Montgomery Academy 0

Andalusia scored single runs in the second and seventh innings on Monday to earn a road win over Montgomery Academy.

Kielan Davis pitched a shutout and scored a run after two walks against the Eagles. Michael O’Brien also scored and went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Parker Adams and Landon Butler were 4-for-4 with Butler smacking a double. Mason Meeks was 3-for-4 in the win.

Ware McCollum struck out 7 Andalusia hitters in 4.1 innings. He gave up 3 hits and a run. Luke Jones allowed a hit and struck out 3 in 1.2 innings of relief. Oscar Fiore struck out 2 in an inning and he walked in a run.

Rick McBride and John Allen Jones had the only 2 hits for the Eagles. McBride also had 2 steals.

Montgomery Academy 10, LAMP 1

The Eagles pounded out 11 hits on the way to the rout of LAMP on Wednesday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

John Allen Jones and Will Hardin had 3 hits apiece for Montgomery Academy. Jones had a pair of 2-out RBI singles on the day. Hardin also had 2 RBIs.

Andrew Hosein was 2-for-4 and Rick McBride had an RBI single in the win.

Oscar Fiore went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and a single run with 3 strikeouts. Hosein pitched the final inning, allowing a hit and registering a strikeout.

Marbury 7, Montgomery Academy 6

The Bulldogs edged Montgomery Academy on Thursday thanks to a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning after the Eagles had rallied in the top of the inning from a 5-1 deficit to lead 6-5.

Oscar Fiore started Montgomery Academy’s comeback with an infield single. Rick McBride tripled him in and John Allen Jones’ single brought in Fiore. Andrew Hosin tied the game with a 2-run double before Luke Jones battled with a 10-pitch at-bat before singling in Hosein.

Will Hardin got the start for the Eagles, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts in 2 innings. Luke Jones gave up 2 runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

Montgomery Academy (4-4) out-hit the home team 10-7. McBride finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. John Allen Jones was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Luke Jones was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Hosein had a pair of RBIs.

Hoover 1, Thompson 0

Reeves Knox scored on a throw-in from Matthew Kincaid late in the second half to give Hoover the home win over Thompson on Thursday.

Sawyer Houlditch earned the shutout in goal for the Bucs.

Wetumpka 10, Prattville Christian 3

Wetumpka whipped Prattville Christian on the road on Thursday.

Cade Segars had a hat trick for the home team. Brady Roberson had an assist in the loss for the Panthers (0-4).

Montgomery Academy 9, Opelika 0

The Eagles swept section opponent Opelika at their McLemore Tennis Center on Wednesday, pushing Montgomery Academy’s season record to 4-0.

The teams of John Alford/Jackson Brown, Ron Sharma/Ford Morano and Edwin Wu/Anton Yang won the doubles matches.

Alford, Brown, Wu, Morano, Yang and Duncan McInnes swept the singles matches.

Montgomery Academy will host Montgomery Catholic on Friday at 3 p.m.

SOFTBALL

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Satsuma 5, Ocean Springs (Miss.) 0

The Gators improved to 13-1-1 with the shutout at home on Wednesday.

Satsuma’s Madison Sawyer (4-0) struck out 8 in 5 innings, allowing 4 hits and no walks. She was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs at the plate.

Ashia Martinez went 2-for-2 and scored twice for the winners. Ella Howell and Presley Willis had RBIs for the Gators.

Satsuma will play a Class 4A, Area 2 home game on Tuesday against Jackson.

Baldwin County 17, McGill-Toolen 0

The Tigers rolled past McGill-Toolen, scoring 13 runs in the first inning. Baldwin County also took advantage of 7 walks and stole 7 bases on the day.

Addisyn Hall drove in a pair of runs for the winners. Madilyn Byrd singled and drove in 2 runs. She also struck out 3 and walked a batter in her lone inning on the mound.

Brooke McGowin singled and drove in a pair of runs, clean-up hitter Payton Boyington singled in a run in the first and had 3 RBIs in the game, and Julianna Thompson got an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 3, Tuscaloosa County 2

Bella Foran went 3-for-3 as the Bucs edged Tuscaloosa County at home on Thursday. Foran tripled in the first inning with singles in the second and fifth.

Kaylee Dunn doubled in a run in the first inning for the Wildcats before Foran’s triple and an RBI single by Olivia Christian.

Christian doubled in another run in the third to give Hoover a 3-2 lead. She also earned the win for the Bucs, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs over 5 innings with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks. Kaitlyn Raines picked up a save.

Hoover hosts Vestavia Hills on Tuesday.

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 10, Montgomery Catholic 0

Alivia Messick struck out 11 as Prattville Christian blanked Montgomery Catholic at home on Thursday. She allowed 2 hits.

Peyton Thrash was 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs for PCA (4-3). Erin Williams was also 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Avery Stokes and Saniyah Weaver were also 2-for-3. Stokes had an RBI and Weaver stole 3 bases.

On Monday, Prattville Christian topped Marbury 13-3 on the road.

Kandice Crosby belted a 3-run homer and had a sacrifice fly for 4 RBIs on the day. Payson Hanson went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Paysley Bayer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Weaver went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Thrash was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Lara Beth Nesmith picked up the win, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 7.

Park Crossing 18 Montgomery Academy 12

The Thunderbirds whipped Montgomery Academy on Monday on the road.

Lucy Nelson led Montgomery Academy at the plate, going 3-for-3 on the day. EG Hines was 3-for-4 and took the loss on the mound, striking out 3. Olivia Smith went 1-for-2 for the Eagles.

Prattville 2, Enterprise 1

The Lions won on the road on Wednesday as Kaytie Chandler struck out 10 in 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits.

Zarria Bozeman went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and 2 RBIs. Emma Moore went 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Pike Road 15, Russell County 0

Haley Melton an Anna Williams combined to throw a 4-inning no-hitter as Pike Road blanked Russell County at home on Thursday. Melton struck out 3 and walked none in 2 innings to earn her fourth win of the season. Williams also struck out 2 and allowed no walks in 2 innings.

The Patriots scored 5 runs in the first and third innings, 4 in the second and 1 in the fourth.

Ameria Anderson went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run and a double. She had 2 RBIs. Kennedy Thompson had a double and 2 RBIs and Ava Milton had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs. Addison Belyeu doubled and had 2 RBIs. Christina Juarez and Melton both doubled for the Patriots.

Pike Road is 8-2 on the season and 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 3.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Westminster Christian 10, Madison County 0

The top-ranked Wildcats dominated Madison County in Class 4A, Area 8 play on Thursday.

Senior AnnaLi Weekley, who was MVP of last year’s state tournament, scored 4 goals on the night. Jasmine Fields scored 3 for Westminster Christian. Shelby Layne, Analyn Olson and seventh-grader Alex Menin added a goal each.

Westminster outshot the Tigers 28-7.

Keepers Piper Blazier (5 saves) and Jamiah Maxtion (2 saves) combined for the clean sheet.

Westminster improved to 6-1 and ended the game in the 70th minute due to the 10-goal rule.

“I’m super proud of the team,” Olson said. “We have worked so hard this year to come back from where we were last year as state champs. I’m so happy to have the support from all my teammates like AnnaLi helping me get that last goal and everything else this season.”

St. James 1, Pike Road 0

The Class 1A/3A No. 5 Trojans edged Pike Road on the road on Monday. Natalie Barton scored the lone goal on an assist by Hailey Vance.

The St. James defense, led by Hannah McClain and Hope McClain, limited Pike Road’s chances throughout the game. Katie Irving picked up the shutout in goal.

Wetumpka 4, Prattville Christian 3

Wetumpka earned the win on the road on Thursday, despite a hat trick by Avery Rogers.

Addison Sutton, Mary Virginia Penton each had an assist for Prattville Christian (1-3).

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 9, Opelika 0

The Eagles routed section opponent Opelika on the road on Tuesday.

Lola Campbell and Mary Surhea White clinched a third set tiebreaker in a two-hour match to highlight Montgomery Academy’s win.
