Spring roundup: Saraland baseball sweeps Russellville

Saraland improved to 4-1 on the season after sweeping a baseball double-header over Russellville with a pair of one-run games – 8-7 and 6-5 – at home on Saturday.

In Game 1, Saraland’s Cam Warren pitched four innings, struck out six, walked four and gave up five runs. “Cam is really improving,” Spartans coach Brett Boutwell said. “He is coming off an injury from last season; the main thing for him right now is seeing that confidence on the mound grow.”

Warren also drove in a pair of runs at the plate. Brooks Womble went 3-for-3, driving in a run, stealing two bases and scoring a pair of runs. “Brooks is really swinging a hot bat right now for us, he had a great weekend,” said Boutwell.

The Spartans’ big rally was for five runs in the fifth inning capped off by a Fuller Chisholm two-out single driving in Warren and Bryson Goff. All nine starters reached base for Saraland.

The Tigers picked up eight walks and four singles off of the Spartans’ pitchers. Cummings scored three runs and stole two bases in defeat. Banks Langston drove in two runs for Russellville.

“Our top three starters on the mound are back for us from last season, which helps us being battle tested early on with our difficult schedule,” said Boutwell.

Bryson Goff and Jamison Curtis each had a pair of hits. “It helps our guys play a challenging schedule, Hartselle (6A) and Russellville (5A) both won state last season, ” said Boutwell.
