Spring roundup: Minor baseball soph gets 15 K’s in 5-inning no-hitter

Ethan Bucher, a sophomore homeschool student who plays for Minor High, struck out 15 batters in a five-inning no-hitter Saturday night as the Tigers whipped Ramsay 16-1. Bucher faced 18 batters, allowing two walks and one earned run – a batter who reached on a dropped third strike.

“He is one of our top pitchers as well as our top infielder and a top hitter,” second-year Minor coach Colby Lange said. “When he isn’t pitching, he plays middle infield and bats cleanup for us.”

In Saturday’s gem, Bucher faced four batters in the first. He stuck out the first, walked the second and closed out the inning with consecutive strikeouts. In the second, he produced the same outcome.

In the third, Bucher registered three strikeouts – but the leadoff hitter, Eli Speights, reached first on a dropped third strike. Speights stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Bucher struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings. He threw 76 pitches – 49 strikes – in the win.

Senior left fielder Chris Baitey was 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored for Minor. Junior center fielder Ty Amerson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Bucher went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. Kareem Keye and Ashton Morgan also doubled.

Amerson finished with six stolen bases on the night while QD Wilson, Corey Richardson, Elijah Fuller, Morgan and Baitey stole four each. Bucher swiped three bases.

Minor is 5-4 on the season with wins over Central-Tuscaloosa, Midfield, Pleasant Grove, Jackson-Olin and Ramsay. The Tigers lost to John Carroll, Shelby County, Homewood and Shades Valley.

BASEBALL

Mobile Christian 10 American Christian 7: Mobile Christian split a double-header this weekend in Tuscaloosa with the win over American Christian and a 3-1 loss to Oak Mountain. The Leopards are 7-2 on the season.

Ben Brewer collected four hits and three RBIs, adding a two-run home run in the fifth inning in the victory over American Christian. Alex Bennett also had a two-run homer and four RBIs for the winners.

Landon Daniels was the winning pitcher for the Leopards, pitching six innings with three strikeouts.

The Leopards recorded 15 hits with Bryce Rivers, Carson Cooper, Chandler Cooper, Seth Smith and Alex Bennett each contributing a pair of hits.

Eric Hines recorded three hits for American Christian, including a two-run home run. Jaylen Crocker took the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs in 1.1 innings.

Oak Mountain pitchers combined to strike out 12 Leopards and allowing only one run and one hit.

Nick McCord had a pair of triples and scored two runs for the Eagles. Brooks Braswell added two hits in the win.

Alex Bennett had the lone hit for the Leopards, a leadoff single in the second inning. Zach McKinion took the loss for Mobile Christian, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out seven.

Saraland 5, James Clemens 4: The Spartans edged James Clemens in eight innings on Saturday. The Jets out-hit Saraland 8-6, but committed four errors to one for the Spartans on the day. Both teams stranded six runners on base.

Jamison Curtis went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI for Saraland. Winning pitcher Benjamin Buxton was 1-for-1 with a pair of runs with an RBI. Brooks Womble and Cameron Warren doubled in the win.

Buxton pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts and a walk. Starter Warren pitched six innings, allowing three runs – all earned – on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Colten Payton went 3-for-4 for James Clemens and Andrew Lawrence was 2-for-3. Aidan Cook doubled in four at-bats. Luke Davenport had a pair of RBIs while Brooks Kulavich and Cook each had one.

Grant Gage took the loss in 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Starter Satchel Wheeler also struck out seven in 4.2 innings, allowing four runs – none earned – with two walks.

James Clemens 17, Etowah 7: The Jets used a 10-run fourth inning to power past Etowah on Friday. James Clemens capitalized on four Etowah errors and pushed across 17 runs on just five hits.

Aidan Cook had a double and three RBIs and scored three runs on his 1-for-3 day at the plate for James Clemens. Kaleb Wilson was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Andrew Lawrence was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Francisco Ramirez had two RBIs.

The Jets also got RBIs from Brooks Kulavich, Colten Payton, John Johnson and Satchel Wheeler.

Mason Busch picked up the win in middle relief, allowing two runs on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks in 2.1 innings.

Etowah’s Trace Thompson, Thomas Farley and Jameson Scizzum got the Blue Devils hits on the day. Scizzum, Hunter Humphries, Slade St. Clair, Andrew Pierce and Braden Boatwright had RBIs.

Starter Brant Stringer was saddled with the loss, allowing one run on no hits with six walks.

Madison County 5, Winfield 3: The Tigers smacked three extra base hits, including a solo home run by Nolan Daversa, in the win at Winfield on Saturday. Jake Thornton tripled and doubled in his three at-bats for Madison County.

Nicholas Sharp earned the win, allowing three runs on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings.

Walt Hennicke drove in a pair of runs and doubled for Winfield. Losing pitcher Kyson Key doubled and Spencer Haney singled for the only other hits for the Pirates.

Key pitched six innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Deshler 5, Madison County 4: Deshler rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge visiting Madison County on Saturday.

Camden Fuller was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for the winners. Easton Fuller went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Reese Wilson went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jacob Allen also had a hit with an RBI and a run scored.

Madison County scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead and pushed the advantage to 4-1 with two more runs in the fourth.

Memphis Scott hit a solo homer and had two RBIs for Madison County. Brody Moon had an RBI on one hit in three at-bats. Nolan Daversa went 3-for-4 with a double and Nicholas Sharp was 2-for-2.

Wilson picked up the win for Deshler, throwing three innings in relief. He gave up four hits and no runs with two strikeouts with one walk. Daversa took the loss for Madison County, giving up two earned runs in two-thirds of an inning on three hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Montverde Academy (Fla.) 7, Hoover 3: The visitors from near Orlando scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to knock off Hoover on Friday.

With the game tied at 3, Justin Orridge tripled in what proved to be the game-winning run on a 2-2 count in the seventh for Montverde.

Camdyn Teague had an RBI for the Bucs. Samuel Schmidt was the starting pitcher for Hoover. He gave up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts over four innings. Jackson Graber, Colin Rengering and Alberto Gomez pitched in relief.

Rengering and Mason Blasche had hits in the loss.

SOCCER

Hoover 3, Vestavia Hills 2 (OT): The Bucs upended Class 7A No. 7 Vestavia Hills in overtime in the teams’ Area 5 opener.

Hoover opened the scoring on a corner kick from Patrick Anderson to Bear Gregory in the first half. Vestavia Hills tied the game off a counterattack and took a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick.

In the second half, Hoover’s Anderson scored on a free kick that deflected off a Rebels’ player to knot the game at 2.

Less than 20 seconds into overtime, Gregory scored to end the game.

Roderick Bartenge and Justin McDowell and keeper Alex Noles led the Hoover defense.

Pelham 1, Briarwood Christian 0 (OT): The Class 6A fifth-ranked Panthers earned the Area 8 win over No. 4 Briarwood with a 4-1 advantage in penalty kicks after the teams battled through two scoreless halves and a pair of five-minute overtime periods.

Leo Montoya put Pelham up 1-0 in penalty kicks followed by a goal from Briarwood’s Matthias Lieb. Pelham went up 2-1 on a kick by Radi Richardson. Pelham goalkeeper Raul Jacobo made a save on Briarwood’s next try. Elder Esquivel put the Panthers up 3-1 before Briarwood’s kicker hit the post. Alejandro Hernandez put the goal in the back of the net to clinch the win.

Pelham improved to 6-3-2 while Briarwood fell to 7-1-2.

GIRLS

SOFTBALL

Hoover 5, Sardis 0: The Bucs improved to 9-2 on the year with the shutout win on Saturday at Jacksonville State University in the Sidney Cooper Round Robin.

Hoover’s Kaitlyn Raines started and struck out eight of the nine batters she faced in three innings. Emily Sims and Olivia Christian pitched two innings each for the Bucs.

Carolyne Hecklinski led Hoover with a pair of hits.

Hoover hosts Hartselle on Tuesday and plays a home Area 5 game on Thursday vs. Tuscaloosa County.

Hoover 2, Central-Phenix City 0: Emily Sims blanked Central in the nightcap of the Sidney Cooper Round Robin at JSU on Friday. She allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one in picking up the complete-game win.

Hoover pounded out 10 hits with Carolyne Hecklinski, Ki Davis and Hannah Christian picking up two each.

In the Round Robin opener Friday, Hoover beat Central 9-3. The Bucs smacked 15 hits to seven for the Red Devils. Bella Foran went 3-for-4 to lead the winners.

Kaitlyn Raines earned the win in relief of Olivia Christian. Raines pitched four innings, allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Christian gave up three runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Foran, Ki Davis, Mac Stribling, Erin Sims and Carolyne Hecklinski all had multiple hits in the win.

Allyson Supan took the loss for Central, allowing seven runs on 13 hits.

Baldwin County 3, St. Paul’s 1: Baldwin County won the Foley Invitational on Saturday, beating St. Paul’s for the title after blanking Theodore 4-0 in the semifinals. Baldwin County improved to 9-5 on the year.

Madilyn Byrd hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to drive in what proved to be the winning run for the Tigers from Bay Minette. Byrd also picked up the win in the circle for Baldwin County, allowing one run on one hit with 10 strikeouts with no walks over seven innings.

Emma Weatherford and Byrd had two hits each to lead the winners. Aspen Gerald had an RBI for the Tigers.

Ava Voris, who took the loss for the Saints, had St. Paul’s lone hit.
