Spring roundup: Hazel Green softball rips Sparkman, Grissom

Raegan Wall helped Hazel Green to an 18-9 softball victory at Sparkman on Tuesday. The senior led the Trojans with four hits in five at-bats, including a home run, with three RBIs. Wall also scored four times.

Allie Cole finished 2-for-3, scored three runs, tripled and drove in two runs for the winners. Mason Quinnie had a double in her three hits in four at-bats. She also had three RBIs.

Khloe Hyatt picked up the win in the circle in relief of Quinnie. Hyatt allowed five runs – one earned – in five innings. She gave up seven hits and struck out two.

Destiny Sims smacked two home runs and drove in three runs from her leadoff spot for Sparkman. Cassie Reasner, Laila Watkins, Natalie Rector and Carys Enabnit had two hits each. Ella Boyd was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs – three earned – on four hits with four strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

Earlier, the Trojans blanked Grissom 10-0 in five innings at home.

Cole went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Hazel Green, which had 11 hits and overcame three errors in the win. Wall was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Quinnie went 2-for-3 and Alyssa Pitner was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Mackenzie Bowling tripled and Wall, Cole and Pitner had doubles.

Pittner got the win, pitching two innings and allowing two hits. She walked one and struck out one.

Kenadie Curry took the loss for Grissom, allowing eight runs – five earned – on six hits.

Harper Presley went 2-for-3 for the Tigers. Teagen Harmon doubled for her one hit in three at-bats. Grissom had five hits and committed two errors.

SOFTBALL

Madison Academy 11, East Limestone 1: The Mustangs rolled past East Limestone at home on Tuesday.

Cat Schreiber went 4-for-4 with a grand slam home run and picked up the win in the circle, working five innings and striking out 10.

Abby Boyd was 2-for-2 with a homer and Emily Burgreen added a three-run home run for the Mustangs. Mya Western finished 3-for-4 on the day.

On Monday, Madison Academy had a big day with a 9-0 win at home over Lexington. Ryan McBridge smacked a home run with three RBIs and Rachael Andrews went 3-for-4 in the win. Memphis Houston was 2-for-2.

Schreiber struck out 11 in seven innings to earn the win.

Satsuma 3, Gulf Shores 1: The Gators improved to 15-4 on the season with the win at home on Tuesday.

Anna Joe Bonds earned the win in the circle and helped her cause with two hits in three at-bats with a pair of RBIs. Bonds (8-2) gave up one earned run on four hits in seven innings. She struck out five and walked eight.

Madison Medley was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win. Kaedenn Enzor, Belle Sheffield and Bralee Byrd scored runs for Satsuma.

On Monday, the Gators earned a 6-5 win over Alma Bryant at home in eight innings.

Satsuma loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failed to push across a run before Bonds drove in Ashia Martinez in another bases-loaded situation for the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.

The Hurricanes had tied the game with a two-out single by Karen Wisher to drive in Brei Hasting, who had reached on an error in the top of the seventh.

Sheffield (7-1) earned the win for Satsuma, pitching eight innings and allowing five runs – all unearned – on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Allie Ladnier was saddled with the loss. She pitched six innings in relief, allowing one run on five hits with a pair of walks.

Sheffield and Medley had RBIs for the Gators.

Emma Hudson smacked a two-run home run for Alma Bryant, her seventh homer in the past week. Ana Acree had a double in the loss.

Spain Park 5, Hoover 4: Charlee Bennett drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Jaguars the walk-off win over intracity rival Hoover on Tuesday.

Spain Park’s Margaret Daniel homered on a 3-2 count to drive in two runs in the first inning.

Ella Ussery pitched 4.1 innings for the winners, allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out five and walked one.

Kaitlyn Raines took the loss for Hoover. She struck out nine and allowed five runs on four hits over 6.1 innings.

McKenzie Stribling had an RBI single for the Bucs while Carolyne Hecklinski went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Baker 7, Jackson 0: Emily Mizelle and Sierra Andrews combined for a one-hitter in the win over Jackson on Tuesday. Mizelle pitched 3.1 innings with no hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Andews finished the game, allowing one hit with one strikeout as Baker improve to 3-2 on the year.

Mizelle went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Avery Bowler had a pair of RBIs with one hit in two at-bats. Madelyn Burton was 2-for-3.

Haley Rooks took the loss in the circle for the Aggies, allowing seven runs – four earned – on eight hits. She struck out five and walked two.

Baker celebrated retiring Honeybee legend and former Jackson head coach Meghan Harbuck Overstreet before the game. Oversteet’s No. 24 jersey was retired and the Baker bullpen was named in her honor.

West Limestone 4, Lauderdale County 2: The Wildcats opened their season with the road win on Monday.

West Limestone got a pair of solo home runs from Addie Wallace and Bella Birdsong. Wallace was 2-for-4 at the plate while Birdsong was 1-for-2. Audrey Jernigan also had an RBI in the win.

JuliAnn Kyle earned the win, allowing one run on one hit over four innings. She struck out three and walked one. KatieLyn Kyle pitched three innings, allowing one hit while striking out five and walking two.

Montgomery Academy 4, Trinity 3: The Eagles won in a walk-off with a walk on Tuesday.

After Trinity had knotted the score at 3-all in the top of the seventh, Montgomery Academy’s Rick McBride led off the Eagles’ half of the inning with a walk. Parker Cook was intentionally walked before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Will Hardin was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Oscar Fiore pushed across the game-winner when he drew a walk.

Hardin threw four scoreless innings for the Eagles. He struck out five and allowed one hit. Ware McCollum pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts. Fiore gave up three runs in the seventh with one strikeout.

Fiore, McBride, Hardin, Bray Renfroe and Walton Norrell had hits for Montgomery Academy (3-0).

Prattville Christian 8, Tallassee 7: The Panthers improved to 4-3 on the season with the win at Tallassee on Wednesday.

Alivia Messick struck out six to pick up the win for Prattville Christian.

Avery Stokes went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the win. Chloe Hollon had three RBIs and Payson Hanson went 2-for-4.

Prattville Christian beat Montgomery Catholic 7-2 on Wednesday as Sarah Williams went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs. Saniyah Weaver went 4-for-4 and score three runs for Prattville Christian. Hollon was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Brylee Byrd earned the win with a complete game effort.

SOCCER

St. Bernard 2, J.B. Pennington 1: The Saints earned their first win in five games on the season at home with a 3-1 penalty kick shootout on Tuesday to go 1-0 in Class 1A/3A Area 7 play.

Saray Cortes scored St. Bernard’s lone regulation goal on an assist from Madilyn Kerber. Goalie Violeta Castro Calavia made two big saves in the second half to help send the game into overtime.

Amelia Tafazoli, Cortes and Rowan Hines made the penalty kicks for the Saints.

West Morgan 4, Danville 2: The Rebels got a hat trick from Madison Parker in handing Danville its first loss of the season at home on Wednesday. West Morgan improved to 3-3 on the season while Danville is 7-1.

Brandy Hernandez scored West Morgan’s other goal and had two assists on the day. Diana Romero had four saves for the Rebels.

Layla Sherrill had two goals for Danville.

On Tuesday, West Morgan cruised to an 8-1 win over Haleyville after jumping to a 5-0 halftime lead. West Morgan improved 2-0 in Class 4A Area 7.

Hernandez scored four goals and added an assist in the win. Parker scored twice and had one assist. Ana Segura also had an assist.

On Monday, the Rebels rolled to an 11-1 win at home over Hamilton. Hernandez also scored four goals in the game.

West Morgan led 7-0 Hamilton at the half.

Alexander Rodriguez scored three goals and had one assist in the win. Parker scored a goal and had an assist. The other goals were scored by Ana Pablo, Stacy Blanco and Jennifer Ascencio.

Hazel Green 5, Elkmont 0: Eighth-grader Reanna Chapman scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 10 Trojans past Elkmont on Tuesday.

Sophomores Addy Humphrey and Anna Mayes and freshman Taylor Hale also scored goals for Hazel Green (6-2).

Eighth-grader Maddy Cantrell had two assists in the win. Seniors Gracie Willett and Makenna Boyle and Hale also had assists.

Elkmont is 3-6 on the season.

On Monday, Hazel Green blanked Madison County 4-0 on the road. Eighth-graders Charli Cantrell, Maddy Cantrell and Chapman and senior Makenna Boyle picked up the goals for Hazel Green. Charli Cantrell and Maddy Cantrell and Boyle also had assists in the win.

Junior goal-keeper Anna Amara had a clean sheet for the Trojans.

Madison County dropped to 7-5 on the season.

Hoover 1, Mountain Brook 0: Fifth-ranked Class 7A Hoover earned a narrow win at 6A No. 3 Mountain Brook on the road on Tuesday.

Jullie Cooke scored the lone goal off a corner kick in the first half.

St. James 10, Brewbaker Tech 0: The Trojans opened their season with the win on the road on Monday.

Katie Brightwell scored four goals and had a pair of assists in the win. Kendal Wright scored two goals. Addison Barber and Ragan King scored the first goals of their varsity careers and St. James also got a goal from Mary Grace Hixon.

Hixon had three assists, Natalie Barton had two, King and Hilda Elofsson added one each. Goalkeeper Katie Irving had the shutout with sisters Hannah and Hope McCain playing strong in the middle of the Trojans’ defense.

St. James plays at Tuscaloosa Academy on Friday at 5 p.m.

Montgomery Academy 1, Auburn 0: Hayes Jenkins scored the only goal as Class 6A second-ranked Montgomery Academy beat 7A Auburn. Mary Elizabeth Cole got the assist on the game-winner.

TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, St. James 0: The Eagles swept their intracity rival on Thursday to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Gabby Barrera beat Reilly Taylor 8-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. Jenna Chandler won the No. 2 singles 8-0 over Stella Sponseller. At No. 3, Mae Mae Voltz beat Karly Bailey 8-0. Kareena Singh topped Bailey Woods 8-2 at No. 4. Marianna Lassner beat Madelyn Wilsford 8-0 at No. 5. Lilian Cameron edged Raleigh Covert 8-6 at the No. 6 position.

In doubles, Montgomery Academy’s Barrera/Chandler beat Bailey/Sponseller at No. 1. Voltz/Lassner topped Taylor/Wilsford 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. Lola Campbell/Singh beat Covert/Wood at No. 3. Anna Powell and Claire Moore beat Haley Hust and Sara Johnston in an extra doubles match.

BOYS

SOCCER

Grissom 3, Sparkman 0: Diego Ojeda scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as the top-ranked 7A Tigers topped Sparkman on Tuesday. Grissom improved to 6-0-2 on the season, 1-0 in Area 7 play.

Maddox Quigley scored the first Grissom goal on a long shot from outside the box, assisted by Ojeda. Quigley also had an assist. John Eshun-Tetteh also had an assist.

Keeper Sage Smith earned the shutout in goal.

Sparkman is 5-4-2 and 0-3 in area play.

Hazel Green 6, Elkmont 2: Hazel Green got four goals from juniors on the squad and a pair from two seniors in the win on Tuesday. The Trojans improved to 7-1-1 on the season while Elkmont fell to 3-3.

Juniors Riley Cowan, Jadon DeMange, Jeremiah Batista and Aaron Eakes got goals in the win. Seniors Edgar Rodriguez and Johnny Temple also scored.

DeMange had two assists and Tyler Holman had one.

On Monday, the Trojans blanked Madison County 3-0. Edgar Rodriguez scored a pair of goals and Jeremiah Batista had the other to open the scoring. Batista, Tyler Holman and Johnny Temple had assists for Hazel Green.

Senior Hoyt Stewart picked up the clean sheet in goal.

Madison County dropped to 0-3 on the year.

Trinity 6, St. James 1: Jackson Champion led the seventh-ranked Class 4A Wildcats with a hat trick with two unassisted goals and one off an assist by Tillman Clements.

Clements scored on an assist by Champion. Lawson Roth and Mac Davis, assisted by Andrew Ensminger, had goals for Trinity.

The Wildcats are 4-4-1 on the season.

Montgomery Academy 6, Auburn 1: The Class 6A sixth-ranked Eagles blitzed 7A Auburn at home on Tuesday as Lucas Rizzo notched a hat trick and Win Berry scored twice.

After Berry got the scoring started on an unassisted goal, Bobby Eskridge scored another unassisted goal for Montgomery Academy. Rizzo scored on a penalty kick before Berry scored off an assist from Rizzo.

Rizzo then closed out the scoring with one on a free kick and the final goal on an assist from Luis Rubio.

St. Bernard 4, J.B. Pennington 0: Goalkeeper Charles Gill had eight saves in the Saints’ home win on Tuesday over J.B. Pennington that gave St. Bernard a 2-3 overall record, 1-0 in Area 7.

Emmanuel Santiago-Silva scored a pair of goals, one in each half. Pelayo Gallego got the second of his two first-half assists on Santiago-Silva’s first goal. Jiovany Arriaga-Aguilar also had a first-half goal.

Reid Bissot scored in the second half. Cole Bissot had assists on both of St. Bernard’s second-half goals.

BASEBALL

James Clemens 9, Hazel Green 1: The Jets scored three in the second, a single run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to earn the win on the road.

Colten Payton and Aidan Cook had two RBIs apiece for James Clemens (5-3). Payton was 2-for-3 with a double while leadoff hitter Brooks Kulavich went 2-for-4. Ty Marsh also doubled for the winners.

Satchel Wheeler earned the win for James Clemens, allowing just a solo home run by Mason Hamilton among three hits surrendered. He struck out one and walked two. Mason Busch pitched two innings, allowing no runs or hits.

Blake Hall and Wyatt Baldwin had the other Hazel Green hits. Blake Saltzman took the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – over 3.2 innings with four walks and one strikeout. Hall allowed five runs on six hits in relief.

Montgomery Academy 10, Verbena 4: Kaci Armistead went 3-for-3 with five stolen bases and three runs scored in the Eagles’ win.

EG Hines picked up the win for Montgomery Academy with three innings pitched. He registered four strikeouts. Armistead also had four strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Rahmet Sidhu was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Hoover 13, Helena 0: Hoover pitchers Wes Carter and Makale Holden combined to throw the shutout at Helena on Tuesday. Carter gave up three hits and struck out four over six innings.

Hayden Berry took the loss for the Huskies. Berry allowed seven runs on seven hits with one strikeout in five innings.

Camdyn Teague doubled in a run in the second for the Bucs. Hoover pushed across five runs in the seventh, led by singles by Will Lawrence, John Mark Norris and Samuel Schmidt. Hoover finished with 16 hits, with Colin Rengering, Caid Finn, Cade Carr, Andrew Pitts and Teague had multiple hits.

Madison County 13-10, Randolph 3-0: The Tigers improved to 6-0 on the year with a double-header sweep at home on Wednesday.

In Game 1, Memphis Scott, Jake Thornton and Nicholas Sharp had two hits apiece. Sharp, Thornton and Connor Drake had doubles with Sharp driving in five runs. Andre Towers had a pair of RBIs. Scott and Thornton scored three runs each.

Ryan Caudle earned the win for the Madison County, giving up two runs – both unearned – with three strikeout and one walk in three innings.

Jackson Weglage was saddled with the loss for Randolph. He gave up 10 runs, six earned, with five strikeouts and four walks in four innings.

Thomas vonAhlefeld went 2-for-4 for the Raiders.

In Game 2, Madison County earned the 10-0 win in five innings, scoring six runs in the second inning and two in both the fourth and fifth. The Tigers had just five hits with Randolph getting four. The Raiders had three errors.

Thornton and Scott doubled for the Tigers. Brody Moon went 3-for-3 in the win. Nolan Daversa struck out six in five innings, allowing four hits with no walks in earning the win.

Alexander Roberson took the loss, allowing eight runs – two earned – with three strikeouts and two walks over four innings.

Andrew Hunter doubled for Randolph with Jack Reeves, vonAhlefeld and Roberson getting the other hits in the loss.

On Tuesday, Madison County whipped Randolph 16-3 in the first game of the three-game series, scoring 11 runs in the sixth inning.

Thornton doubled and had three RBIs in the win. Kenneth Spratt, Drake, Caudle – who was 2-for-4 – all also doubled.

Thornton picked up the win, striking out six with no walks over five innings.

Hunter took the loss, allowing five runs with five strikeouts with four walks in five innings.

Jimmy Bailey and Jack Sanders had doubles for Randolph. Sanders went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Homewood 6, Briarwood 5: The Patriots eked out the home win on Wednesday as Witt Brown earned the win in relief and scored the game-winner – breaking a 5-all tie – on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning by Jack Ross.

JB Sain started for Homewood (5-1), but went out of the game due to an injury in the first inning. Tripp Gann then worked 2.1 innings, striking out six of the first seven hitters he faced. Brown got the win with 1.2 innings and Levi Nickoli earned the save – working his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh by striking out the last two Briarwood batters.

Connor Brunner singled in Jackson Parris, who had doubled, for Homewood’s first run to answer two unearned Briarwood runs. Owen Isenhower drove in Jackson Warren in the second for the Patriots. Isenhower stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to give Homewood the lead.

Homewood added a pair of runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Warren, who then scored on another wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Brown walked in the fourth inning, took second on Gann’s single and third on another wild pitch before Ross’ game-winning RBI.
