Spring Garden star Ace Austin claims second MaxPreps Player of the Year honor
Another year, another top honor.
Spring Garden guard Ace Austin claimed her second straight MaxPreps girls’ basketball player of the year honor for the state of Alabama after another standout year with the Panthers.
Past winners besides Austin include Hoover’s Reniya Kelly, now at North Carolina, and Hazel Green’s Samiya Steele, now at Jacksonville State.
Austin finished her senior year averaging 26.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 4.2 steals per game for Spring Garden, which won its third straight Class 1A title this season.
She finished her high school career with 3,940 points, 1,382 rebounds, 1,429 assists and 863 steals, according to the AHSAA, and went 203-10 as a player.
A consensus 4-star prospect, the 5-foot-8 guard signed with Alabama and chose the Crimson Tide over offers that included Missouri, Wake Forest, Clemson, Mississippi State and MTSU.
In her final high school basketball game, she piled up 40 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals in the Class 1A state championship game against Brilliant.
She had a triple-double with 32 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds and five steals in the semifinal matchup with R.C. Hatch.
Last season saw Austin become the third junior to claim the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Miss Basketball award, with the Alabama signee a contender to become the first player to repeat in winning the prestigious award.
