Spectacular Alabama mansion built with home-design software on the market for nearly $5 million

It has 10,000 square feet of living space, a large movie theatre and indoor golf simulator, a 500-bottle wine cellar and a TV hidden behind a mirror in one of the bathrooms.

And it was all designed by a Dothan doctor using home-design software.

Craig Schmidtke began working on the design in 2008, he told the Wall Street Journal. It took seven years and some training from the software company, but he and his family have now lived in the dream home he designed for the past nine years.

According to the Journal, Schmidtke and his family moved from Colorado to Dothan in 2005. By 2007, he and his wife, Anna, began thinking of building a home.

“I started to do some research and found some homes I liked on the internet,” Craig Schmidtke told the Journal. “I thought, ‘I could draw the house myself.’”

They purchased the land for $275,000 in 2011 and the Neoclassical style home took four years to build.

Now, after nine years in their dream home, the Schmidtkes have put the spectacular mansion on the market for $4.979 million. If it sells anywhere near that, it will shatter the record of $2 million for the most expensive home ever sold in Dothan.

Schmidtke declined to tell the Journal how much they spent on constructing the home, but he said it was higher than the asking price.

“All we want is for the next buyer to love it as much as we do.”
