Alabamians are set to start receiving special tax rebates next month.

State lawmakers passed the rebate plan in May. The plan calls for $150 rebates for single people and $300 for married couples with no caps based on income. The one-time rebates are expected to go to some 1.9 million state residents.

“Thanks to the work of the Alabama Legislature, we continue making these wise investments while paying down debts, adding to our savings and returning the working people of Alabama’s money back to them through tax rebate,” Gov. Kay Ivey said in a press release announcing her signing the bill.

The plan will cost the state some $393 million which comes from a $2.8 billion surplus in the Education Trust Fund.

Checks from the Alabama Department of Revenue will begin arriving on Nov. 30. For those who use direct deposit for their tax refunds, the rebates will go to their checking account. If there’s no address on file, the refund will be issued via check.

To qualify, you must have filed a state income tax return for 2021 on or before Oct. 17, 2022. People who don’t file a return or who are considered as a dependent for another taxpayer in 2021 aren’t eligible.

The payments are exempt from state taxes.
