In the second game, the Toros (26-15) seemed to be in command most of the way behind the pitching of Chris Sullivan. JD Pruitt’s team scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings and added two more in the seventh for a 6-2 lead.
However, Saraland (27-9) scored on a run on a wild pitch and then got a two-out, three-run homer to centerfield off the bat of Santae McWilliams to send the game to extra innings tied at 6-6. The teams traded runs in the eighth before Eurgil’s groundball single up the middle scored pinch-runner Ethan Kick for the final run of the game.
Mytch Deacy, who pitched the final three innings in relief of Sullivan, got the final three outs in the ninth for the win. Cooper Henson, the fifth Saraland pitcher, took the loss.
Eurgil was 2-for-5 with two RBIs for Spanish Fort. Jack Holley also had two hits. Newton Gardner hit a home run. Cam Laffitte had three hits for the Spartans. Brooks Womble added two.
In the opener, Saraland’s Bryson Goff scattered four hits over seven innings and struck out six to get the win. He walked two and induced a ground ball out with the bases loaded in the seventh to clinch the victory. Michael Smith drove in two runs for the Spartans, and Laffitte drove in the other.
John Henry Winstead took the loss for Spanish Fort. Lakelon Ray had two hits.
Friday’s winner will face Stanhope Elmore (29-5) next week in the Class 6A semifinals.
