Spain Park caps season by shutting out Pelham
Spain Park ended the season on a high note.
The Jaguars (7-3) earned a 39-0 victory over Pelham for their fifth straight victory, as the offense rolled up 536 yards of total offense and the defense earned its second shutout of the season.
“Our defense played an outstanding game,” Spain Park coach Tim Vakakes said. “Any time you hold a team to zero points, you are doing something right.”
Spain Park tied with Hoover for fourth place in Class 7A, Region 3, but missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season by virtue of falling 28-20 to Hoover in September. The seven wins, though, marks the Jags’ most wins since advancing to the Class 7A championship game in 2015. It’s also Spain Park’s first winning season since 2017.
“I’m very proud of the way this team finished the season,” Vakakes said.
Pelham (5-5) dropped three of its last four games and did not qualify for the playoffs, snapping a three-year streak of playoff appearances.
The teams played to a scoreless tie after the first quarter, but Spain Park receiver Jonathan Bibbs got the offense going by catching TD passes of 75 and 81 yards from Brock Bradley in the second quarter for a 14-0 halftime lead.
Four different players scored touchdowns in the second half.
Stat sheet: Bibbs caught five passes for 202 yards and two TDs. Bradley completed 10-of-19 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Derrick Shanks ran 10 times for 113 yards and DaKarai Shanks ran 15 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Crowley scored on a 14-yard run, and Reggie Jackson caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. … Spain Park was flagged nine times for 95 yards in penalties. … Pelham had 214 yards of total offense – 91 on the ground and 123 through the air.
Key stat: The Jags ran 31 times for 295 yards – nearly 10 yards per carry – and had two players run for more than 100 yards.
Coachspeak: “I really believe Spain Park is a top-15 team. They just play in a region where it is tough to make the playoffs. You have to score points on a team like this when you have the opportunity, and we didn’t.” – Pelham coach Mike Vickery
They said it …: “We struggled at the beginning of the game. We just had to focus and do what we were told to do. Brock made an excellent read on the slant pass. When I caught ball, I knew I was going to score. I trust my quarterback, and I was glad he gave me the ball in my last game here at Spain Park.” – Bibbs
“We had a simple game plan and that was to establish the run first, then spread the ball in the passing game, and we did that. It’s a bitter-sweet season to win seven games and not make the playoffs.” – Bradley
