Before Elliot Maisel became chairman of the Mobile Airport Authority eight years ago, reporters rarely covered board meetings. Few, if any, members of the public, paid much attention to the group.

The same can be said of the flying public in Mobile, which has long sought more direct flights and cheaper fares in surrounding states rather than driving to the far northwest side of the city to catch connecting flights from Mobile Regional Airport.
