Southwest Airlines cancellations still affecting Birmingham airport

Southwest Airlines cancellations still affecting Birmingham airport

Another round of mass cancellations with Southwest Airlines is affecting airports around the U.S., including Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Kim Hunt, a spokesperson for the Birmingham Airport Authority, said BHM is seeing 10 canceled departures and 9 canceled arrivals on Thursday. Hunt said that was consistent with the national picture.

“We know this is difficult for travelers and we are hopeful they will be operating fully very soon,” Hunt said. “Our best advice to passengers who are scheduled on a Southwest flight in the next few days – is to check their flight status often and contact the airline for details, rebooking when necessary, and any other assistance related to the disruption.”

On Thursday, the airline canceled another 2,350 flights, according to the Associated Press. That’s about 58% of its entire schedule, with total cancellations of more than 10,000 for the week. The cancellations came after storm-related delays that began over the weekend when snow and ice blanketed most of the nation.

Southwest added a page to its website on “travel disruption information,” saying that all customers traveling through Jan. 2, 2023 are able to rebook in the original class of service or travel standby within 30 days without paying additional charges.

Mary Swanstrom, spokesperson for Huntsville International Airport, said HSV is not being impacted by the cancellations.
